Topic How do different shaped wheels affect movement? Allotted Time

Rationale: How is this lesson relevant at this time with these students? Why is it important? How does it fit with the rest of the unit? Now that the students are familiar with the attributes of each shape they can explore how shape affects movement.

Learning Intention: What will students learn? ( what do I want them to learn?) Evidence of Learning: How will students show their learning? products

I can record my observations from the activity I can begin to understand how shape affects movement

Recording on the observation sheet Discussing observations with class

observations conversations

Criteria: Teacher modeling What criteria will help students know how to be successful? (What will I look for in the evidence?) Planning for diversity (adaptations, extensions, other): In what ways does the lesson meet the needs of ALL learners? How will you plan for students who have learning/behaviour difficulties or require enrichment? ELL: teacher modelling, kinetic support Hearing: repetition, use of microphone Behaviour: Try the activity if unsuccessful Give M time to play with the car afterwards with EA support, offer shape cards during the activity

Res our

ces, Material and Preparation: What resources, materials and preparation are required? Wooden car, interchangeable wheels for each shape, ramp, observation sheet 1

VIU simplified lesson plan template – use in conjunction with a unit plan. Organizational/Management Strategies: (anything special to consider? How will you organize the activities, the materials and the students so that things run smoothly? ) Students will likely move closer and closer to see, remind them to sit on the outside of the mat to allow for peers to see

Pacing

Process:

Teacher will Have students sit in a semicircle on the mat show them car and wheels My friend gave me this car but it didn’t have any wheels on it. When I asked for the wheels, I just got this box of wheels and I’m not really sure which ones will work best.

Transform:

What wheels should we try first? Attach the wheels suggested and place the car on the top of the ramp Repeat

Connect: Share Learning intention!

Closure:

What wheels worked? Which wheels sort of worked? Which wheels did not work? Go over sheet

Students will

Suggest what wheels to try first Observe Record on observation sheet

Discuss observations

Discuss ideas after raising hand

Why do we think these wheels worked and these didn’t?

Reflection What was successful in this lesson? If taught again, what would you change to make this lesson even more successful and inclusive for diverse and exceptional students?
