Now even MORE gold
THERE might not be a beach at Punchbowl, but these three young men from Punchbowl Boys’ High know exactly what to do in the surf in the event of an emergency. After signing up to a project run by Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA) and recruited by the Lakemba Sports Club - or the Lakembaroos as they are affectionately known - Mohammed Hakim, Daniel Adra and Abdulatif Haddad (pictured) have become qualified Surf Life Savers patrolling the beaches of Cronulla this summer. The project, called “On The Same Wave,” graduated 17 men and women from middle-eastern backgrounds with the help of some extraordinary people, including Tony Coffey, Scott Rofe and Lee Howell from SLSA and Dr Jamal Rifi and Fatima Kourouche from the Lakembaroos. They celebrated their achievement at a function in Campsie on Saturday night, receiving their uniform and Bronze Medallion after four long months of training from Surf Life Saving Australia CEO Brett Williamson. The function also marked the Lakembaroos’ 90th anniversary. Mohammed, a Punchbowl local who joined Eloura Surf Club, had his first patrol on Sunday afternoon and said that he was honoured to receive the Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC). He hopes to continue patrolling the beach this summer. Daniel, who lives in Greenacre, has signed up to be a member at North Cronulla Surf Club and said the experience gave him life skills including Senior First Aid and CPR skills. Having his first patrol on Sunday, Daniel helped a young woman who was struggling in a rip, which made him feel quite proud - his message, “swim between the flags.” As for Greenacre’s Abdulatif, he joined North Cronulla Surf Club and will have his first patrol this weekend. He said he is excited that he is now a qualified Surf Lifesaver and the journey was difficult for him, especially learning all the theory involved. Deputy Principal at Punchbowl Boys’ High School, Jihad Dib, said the school is proud of the three and plans are already in place to utilise their skills during the upcoming school carnival. “The whole school community is extremely proud of the achievements of these young men,” he said. “Our boys worked extremely hard on their swimming skills and speed in order to fulfill the requirements of the prestigious bronze medallion. The boys have made every effort to contribute to the society in which they live.” The next project for the Lakembaroos will be to recruit SES volunteers.
