ecember is a time for many things: celebration, reflection, thanksgiving and hope. For many of us, it has been a year of blessings as well as challenges but as they say, adversity builds character. On the topic of excellence, we proudly feature Clement Lee, Managing Director and co-founder of Borneo Divers. Clement made history when he recently became the first Asian to be awarded the DEMA (Diving Equipment and Marketing Association) Reaching Out Award – a prestigious recognition given to outstanding individuals for their contribution to the global diving industry. igh-powered machines that go from zero to 60 miles per hour while zooming across the South China Sea – a wet and wild spectacle for speed junkies to enjoy during the F2 Sabah World Cup Powerboat Race 2008. Last year, Kota Kinabalu was selected as one of the four cities in the world to host this prestigious sporting event, which includ-

ed Villa Real de Santo Antonio in Portugal, Riga in Latvia and Jeddah in Saudi Arabia. This year, Sabah is proud to once again host this world class race. F2 World Cup teams from UAE, Holland, Norway, France, Qatar, United Kingdom, Finland, Italy, German, USA, Kuwait, Sweden, Portugal and Latvia will be competing to be crowned champion. Last year, more than 10,000 people joined in the excitement which took place at the Kota Kinabalu Waterfront. Unlike a regular high-powered speedboat, Formula 2 boats are able to turn almost instantaneously, incurring more G forces than any other racing machine on the planet! This is due to their specially designed tunnel hulls. F2 boats can also reach speeds of up to 200 km/h – quite the adrenaline rush! In conjunction with the race, there will also be a carnival for the young and old to enjoy. Visit the many food and beverage stalls and other fascinating exhibitions. Are you ready for the rush? The F2 World Cup Series is sanctioned under the ruling authority for motorized water-sports, the Union Internationale Mononautique (UIM). For more information, please contact Powersport Events Sdn. News Call for More Direct KK–Cebu Flights: The Sabah and Cebu governments have hopes for better air connectivity between Kota Kinabalu and Cebu. This was expressed during a recent courtesy call made by the Governor of Cebu, Gwendolyn F. Garcia, to the State’s Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, Datuk Masidi Manjun. The Minister said that he also discussed how the Sabah government and Cebu could work together in the promotion of tourism for mutual benefit. “We believe that both Sabah and Cebu have good tourism products which people from both places would be able to enjoy. We believe we should also promote more regional tourism, and this is where the Cebu-Sabah tie-up seems to make sense,” he said. Presently, there are only 2 weekly direct flights servicing the KK-Cebu-KK route. Coast

Restaurant and Bar

ocated at Shangri-La’s Rasa Ria in Tuaran, the Coast is a fine dining experience we highly recommend. Its cosy ambience is accentuated by the soft lights and ‘underwater’ theme (the ceiling lights are creatively modelled after jellyfish). The restaurant was hailed ‘Best Restaurant’ by the Malaysian Tatler from 2003–2005. Diners can choose to enjoy a drink or two at the patio before commencing dinner indoors. The menu is a splendid palette of flavours. For starters, the Foie Gras Plate is a top pick, but if seafood is your thing, we recommend the Panko Crab Cake served with frozen sweet chilli and tomato, cilantro, red onion salsa and X.O, butter-yaki sauce. The Clam Chowder – prepared New England style with double cream, smoked duck and white truffle oil – has also received rave reviews. Simply opulent! For the main course, you won’t be disappointed with their interesting range, including the classic Rack of Lamb – juicy lamb flavoured with marmalades and rosemary oil. Fancy some seafood? Ask your waiter about the Ocean Catch, prepared to the chef’s mood of the evening, which promises a fascinating twist to your dining experience! Complement your meal with a selection of wines and finish off with mouth-watering desserts that are so beautifully prepared, it seems like a shame to eat them! The restaurant also offers

L

three private thatched gazebos on the beach for a more romantic and unforgettable dining experience. Fine dining at its best – right here at Coast. Dress code is smart casual (no flip flops or shorts). Dinner is served from 6:30 – 10:30 pm. The bar is open from 5:30 pm till late (happy hours from 5:30 – 8:00 pm). For reservations, please call 088-792888 ext. 6304.

Kedai Kopi Cravings! The kedai kopi (coffee shop) is an essential part of your dining experience in Sabah. You can find these quaint eateries at every corner. Quick, affordable local specialties at their best. Perfect for breakfast, lunch and tea, here are some of our recommended eats when in Kota Kinabalu: Gear Up Café (Gaya Street, 016 849 4708) – Famous for its fresh buns, straight from the oven. Also serves a variety of desserts, such as a cooling barley drink and a soya jelly drink called ‘leong fun’ served with condensed milk. Open daily from 6:00 am to 4:30 pm. Beaufort Restaurant (Jalan Penampang, 019 8715419) – Bring family and friends for a hearty meal. Try the stir-fried bittergourd with beef or chicken and claypot Japanese beancurd with seafood, served with steamed white rice. Delicious! Open daily from 8 am–2 pm and 6:00–9:00 pm. Kedai Kopi Kwong Tung Chai Kolombong (Jalan Pantai, 016 830 2877) – Serves the best homemade charcoal-roasted duck, as well as chicken rice and char siew (sweet roasted pork). Usually packed lunch; many wait in line just to get a table! Open daily from 7:30 am – 2:00 pm. Kedai Kopi Yee Fung (Gaya Street, 088-312042) – At 22 years old, this is one of the oldest coffee shops in Kota Kinabalu. Try their signature Claypot Chicken Rice, served with mushrooms, salted fish and baked whole egg, or a bowl of laksa – a classic Malaysian favourite! In the mornings, there’s always a mad rush for their famous ‘kon lau mein’ (homemade noodles in a special sauce served with your choice of meat) Open daily from 7:00 am–1:00 pm. Kedai Kopi Seng Hing (Sinsuran) – Mention Seng Hing and the locals will quickly point out their specialty dish: Tom Yam noodles! A spicy and creamy soup served with a generous portion of noodles and prawns (or fish). The coffee shop has a wide selection of meals including fried noodles, fried rice and chicken rice. We recommend the unique ‘Lihing Chicken’ served with white rice – a delicious dish that uses local rice wine to give it that one-of-a-kind flavour! Open daily from 7:00 am to 2:30 pm. * Please note that most Chinese coffee shops serve pork.

St. Michael’s and All Angels Church, Sandakan he historical city of Sandakan is home to many buildings and monuments, each witness to the changes of time and events over the years. One of the oldest buildings is St. Michael’s and All Angels Church.

T

The construction of the first stone building in Sabah began in 1893 and took almost 30 years to complete. Designed by New Zealander Mr. B.W. Mountfort, the building was first constructed with belian (ironwood) timber, followed by brick and finally stone, which is said to have from the nearby Buli Sim Sim, while the white stones that adorn the windows and doors are from Hong Kong. The stones were delivered from Buli Sim Sim by prison labour at RM1.25 per cubic yard. A cubic foot of stone weighs approximately 140 lbs and each stone was painstakingly laid atop each other. During the 1906 Michaelmas celebration, celebrated on 30 September, the nave and transepts were finally dedicated. Three services were held that day to celebrate the goodness of God and the faith of His people. The western porch (the main entrance) of the Church was not completed and dedicated until 1925 – 32 years from the start of its construction. The Church avoided major damage during World War II in the 1940s and remains one of the very few stone buildings in the whole of Sabah. The beautiful stained glass windows in the church were donated by Australians to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II.

Location Getting There The Church is part of the Sandakan Heritage Trail. Alternatively, take a taxi from Sandakan town. It is recommended that you make return arrangements with your taxi driver as public transport is not readily available in this area. Contact Rev. Clarence Fu Tel. no : +6089 215860 / 274830 E-mail: [email protected] Postal address P.O. Box 17, 90700, Sandakan

Business hours: 4 pm–1 am (weekdays), till 2 am on weekends and the eve of public holidays.

Blue Note Another one of Kota Kinabalu’s favourite party haunts, Blue Note has been around since 1994, entertaining crowds with non-stop music, friendly bar service and unique theme nights. This night spot, located at Shangri La’s Tanjung Aru Resort, is both classy and funky with its great décor with a touch of understated glamour. Enjoy live performances and great music spun by an in-house DJ. Weekends are the best time to check out the happening crowd, and specially flown-in DJs play the latest in trance, dance and house music. Happy hours on selected drinks are from 9–11 pm. Open daily from 6 pm to 2 am.

Upperstar Cafe & Bar Upperstar has grown from a modest pub and café into one of the most popular hang-outs in Kota Kinabalu, thanks to its laid-back atmosphere and affordable drinks. Enjoy ‘buckets’ of beer at extremely affordable prices and be sure to check out the extensive menu – we recommend the generous portions of lamb chops or for a snack, the deep-fried quail. The establishment also provides wi-fi services and computers, allowing you to surf, snack and sip! There are two establishments: in Kota Kinabalu (across from Hyatt Regency Kinabalu) and in the bustling district of Damai. Open from 6:00 pm to 1:00 am on weekdays and until 2:00 am on weekends.

The Bajau Horsemen of Kota Belud Known as the ‘Cowboys of the East’, the Bajau horsemen of Kota Belud are known for their unrivalled horse-riding skills. During special occasions, they don the badu sampit – a long-sleeved shirt, usually white or black, with gold betawi buttons that run down the front opening. The shirt is also decorated with silver flowers called intiras. This is worn with trousers called seluar sampit (usually black) and a headcloth (podong). A silver-hilted dagger (karis) is worn on his side, accompanied by a whipping crop known as the pasut. But it’s not the just the horsemen who come out in their full regalia – the ponies are also decked in colourful costumes! The kain kuda almost completely covers the pony except for the

eyes and nose. The kain (cloth) comes in vibrant colours, making the ponies hard to miss when galloping across a field! The saddle (sila-sila) is a small piece of buffalo hide shaped to fit the pony’s back. A thick piece of cloth (lapik) is placed under the sila-sila. Antique brass bells (seriau), colourful reins (tingalu) and bridle (kakang) complete the ensemble. Indeed, both horseman and pony are an interesting sight to see, complemented by riding skills like no other.
