pa khabar? Ready for another month of things to do, places to see and people to meet? Let ‘Sabah Malaysian Borneo’ give you an idea or two. I have always been fascinated with the innovative charm of our Sabahan people – who would imagine making a musical instrument out of wild-growing bamboo or jackfruit wood to carve a lute (known as the ‘gambus’)? That’s why the Bamboo Music Festival (p.3) is my top pick for this month’s Happenings & Highlights. I’ll be making my way to Tamparuli to join the residents as they show off their musical skill playing instruments made of bamboo. I have heard the Kinabalu Bamboo Orchestra perform several times and I must say, listening to ‘Black Magic Woman’ played on the sompoton is something else! There will be a myriad of activities to witness and enjoy during the festival as well. Read more about it in our Happenings & Highlights section.

3 11th Sabah Hospitality Fiesta 2008 8–9 November he Sabah Hospitality Fiesta is back! Bamboo Music Festival 26 November amboo is highly significant in the lives of the local folk and this November, the locals are celebrating this evergreen plant! Join in the merriment in Tamparuli this November – there will be performances by the famed Kinabalu Bamboo Orchestra playing songs on various musical instruments crafted from bamboo, including the sompoton (bamboo aerophone), bungkau (jaw harp) and tagunggak (hollow bamboo idiophone). Watch various bands and solo bamboo musicians battle it out to win prizes for the best act. Don’t miss other exciting events such as the rampanau (bamboo stilt-walking) race, bamboo raft-building competition and performances by local artistes. 8th Borneo Tens & 1st Borneo Women 7’s 2008 8–9 November he 8th edition of one of the most highly anticipated rugby events in Malaysia takes place at the Sandakan Rugby Club, Sandakan this month. Shikai Restaurant hikai, located in Asia City Complex, Kota Kinabalu, offers diners the best of Chinese cuisine at affordable prices in a unique ambience. Stepping into the restaurant, you are greeted by sturdy teak tables and wooden panels reminiscent of ancient China. Chinese characters adorn the walls; the most outstanding one is the symbol of ‘bravery’ in the main dining area. Upstairs, there are five private dining rooms ideal for functions and parties which can accommodate up to sixty people. Of course no Chinese restaurant would be complete without dim sum on the menu. This popular breakfast favourite includes dumplings, mini buns and rice cakes, most of which are steamed and served in bamboo containers. Highly recommended is Shikai’s Spicy Dumpling – a combination of prawns and chicken – which is served with a delicious vinegar and chilli oil sauce. For the main course, you are spoilt for choice! Start off with the soup of the day and proceed to indulge in any one of their main dishes, including the Pi Pa Duck (served in a tasty dark sweet and sour sauce) or the Herbal Tong Gui Duck. also a popular favourite, ideal for those looking for something quick and filling for lunch. Another noteworthy dish is the Deep-fried Kuey Teow (rice noodles) which comes with mixed vegetables in a thick sauce. Going vegetarian? You’ll enjoy the Buttermilk Baby Kailan. Shikai, which means ‘Four Seas’, also has a wonderful array of desserts – a must-try is the Pomelo Mango Cream Sago. There are also quick and easy à la carte dishes ideal for lunch, such as the Four Sea Seafood Noodles and Brunei Shikai Spicy Noodles – house specialties you won’t find anywhere else! Shikai is located at Asia City Complex (ground floor, facing the Chung Hwa Primary School). Pulau Tiga ebelum ia terkenal sebagai lokasi musim pertama ‘Survivor’, sebuah rancangan realiti TV Amerika yang terkenal, Pulau Tiga sememangnya tempat menarik yang jarang diikunjungi oleh pelancong. Pulau Tiga adalah yang terbesar di antara tiga pulau yang membentuk Taman Pulau Tiga, yang diwartakan sebagai taman marin pada 1933. Kaya dengan hidupan lautnya, taman ini sesuai untuk aktiviti selaman dan snorkeling. Bentuk rendah dan bujur Pulau Tiga adalah disebabkan letusan kawah berapi lumpur dalam jangka waktu yang panjang. Beberapa kawah lahar lumpur masih boleh dilihat di puncak pulau tersebut. – Reaching Out To Greater Heights and Depths vacated Sipadan Island years ago. “We left without compensation, which is fine with me but we did it in the name of preserving the environment. And 4 years after vacating, I am glad to say that you can see more marine life coming back – more turtles, sharks, jackfish, barracudas and much more. And interestingly, there is a good regeneration of the coral reef. All this is good news for our environment,” he says, adding that many other marine life experts and photojournalists share his sentiment. As proud as he is of the thriving dive industry in Sabah, there are challenges that need to be addressed. Among them, Clement believes, is the unfair tagging of Sabah in travel advisories. “I recently had a group of Americans diving in Mabul with me as part of a familiarization trip. And they asked me one day, ‘Why is Sabah mentioned in travel advisories?’ Upon which I shot back the question ‘Do you feel safe here during your trip?’ And they replied, ‘Oh definitely! And your people are so warm and friendly.’ So I said, ‘There you go, you just answered your own question,’” he recounts. Clement admits that global events such as 9/11 and the Bali Bombings will undoubtedly have an effect on our travel industry but instead of giving in to these adversities, this is when the industry needs to step up even more to market and promote the destination. “And this is where I can say I am very proud of the Sabah Tourism Board for cushioning the shortcomings and push back of the industry during trying times. It is this kind of concerted efforts that help the industry as a whole,” he comments. He also stresses on the importance of continuously producing professionally qualified and trained people in the diving industry. “We are working on a program for Form Five leavers to join training courses, hoping to instill an interest in diving and in turn, create more dive professionals, especially among our local people,” he adds.

t was not the first time Clement Lee made the headlines, only this time, it made the whole of Asia sit up and pay attention. In October, Clement became the first Asian to be awarded the DEMA (Diving Equipment and Marketing Association) Reaching Out Award – a prestigious recognition given to outstanding individuals for their contribution to the global diving industry. Sabah’s own Clement joins the ranks of notable figures including John Cronin, the founder of PADI, Stan Waterman, the codirector of underwater photography and second unit in the production of the motion picture ‘The Deep’ and winner of 5 Emmy awards and Clement’s personal inspiration, Jacques-Yves Costeau who was the first ever recipient of this award. The ceremony this year took place in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.

Sabahans and Malaysians alike are truly proud of his achievement but what does it mean to the man himself? “To me, it is most significant that they give recognition to someone from Asia. I am proud, honoured and humbled to be recognized internationally.” Clement is undoubtedly one of the most influential forces in the diving’s growth not only in Sabah (he established Borneo Divers and is known for putting Sipadan Island on the map) but also throughout South-East Asia. His love for scuba diving blossomed during his teenage years and in 1983 he became a certified diver. Needless to say, it was a move that changed the face of scuba diving in Sabah forever. Having established Borneo Divers and his work on promoting Sipadan island as one of the world’s top diving sites are commendable achievements, but what sets him apart is his

unwavering passion for the environment. “I have two basic principles: Conserving the environment and ensuring the dive industry is always handled by professionally trained and qualified people.” And his contributions have indeed reflected this through dozens of his environmental efforts and programs such as Mabul Marine Day and Project AWARE, which incorporate clean-up activities of both the beach and the reef. The environment is and always will be the key element, says Clement. “Without our environment, there will be no diving industry. The environment is our silent partner and although ‘they’ don’t speak, ‘they’ fight back. And when ‘they’ fight back, there is always a huge price to pay,” he says. It is upon these principles that Borneo Divers voluntarily

Clement ends with words of praise for Sabah as a prime diving destination. “I have been to so many dive spots in the world, including Thailand, Maldives, the Cayman Islands but I have to say none of them can compare to what we have here. Indeed, people say you can see the same things in other places: turtles, barracudas etc. But I tell you, no where else in the world can you find all these marine life in one island (Sipadan), all within metres of each other. That is the beauty of Sipadan,” he tells. But Sabah’s unrivalled treasure? “Our people. No where else can you find the warmth, charm and hospitality of the Sabahan people. This is one asset that no one can ever take away from us.”

Orkestra yang terdiri daripada 110 anggota ini akan dipimpin oleh konduktor utamanya iaitu Kevin Field, apabila mereka mengadakan persembahan di Auditorium Tun Raffae, Menara Tun Mustapha, Yayasan Sabah di Kota Kinabalu. Persembahan mereka di Kota Kinabalu merupakan sebahagian daripada jelajah mereka di Malaysia Timur, dengan Kuching, Sarawak sebagai tempat pertama mereka sebelum membuat persembahan di Sabah. Orkesta termuda Malaysia ini, terdiri daripada pemuzik muda dari seluruh Malaysia yang berusia antara 13 hingga 33 tahun. Ditubuhkan pada 13 Januari 2006, MPYO dibentuk untuk menyediakan pentas buat pemuzikpemuzik muda mempamerkan bakat dan menggalakkan minat mereka dalam menghargai semua genre muzik simfoni. Di bawah bimbingan Kevin Field, setiap bahagian daripada MPYO menerima latihan profesional daripada pemuzik-pemuzik Orkestra Filharmonic Malaysia (MPO) dan setiap anggota MPYO turut berpeluang untuk menyertai perhimpunan dan bengkel ensemble muzik chamber semasa khemah muzik yang diadakan setiap suku tahun. Bulan ini, biarkan mereka memukau anda apabila mereka mempersembahkan pelbagai lagu klasik kegemaran klasik termasuklah Overture: Roman Carnival (Op.9) oleh Berlioz, Cello Concerto in B Minor (Op.104) oleh Dvorak and Symphony No.2 in C Minor (Op. 17) – ‘Little Russian’ oleh Tchaikovsky.
