Foreword by new Vice-Principal

Three Students emerge Top Students in Singapore at ‘N’ and ‘O’ Level Examinations 20 January 2009 – a week after the release of the 2009 ‘O’ Level results and a month after the release of the 2008 ‘N’ Level results, an air of celebration still lingered in Riverside Secondary School. Staff and pupils savoured their ice-cream treats as they reminisced the school’s elation when the 2008 graduating cohort achieved sterling results at the national examinations. Kelvin Khong and Amos Tan emerged as the Top Normal Technical Students in Singapore at the ‘N’ Level Examination, both achieving Distinctions in the 6 subjects they studied. Nadiah Nadhirah also emerged as the Top Malay Student in Singapore at the ‘O’ Level Examination, having scored 9 Distinctions, including A1s in three languages – English Language, Malay Language and Chinese as 3rd language

Our twin sisters, Uma Magheswary and Uma Sangkery, who both scored 9 distinctions (including Higher Tamil Language) celebrated their success in style with their family who turned up in full force to give them support. All these five students had another thing in common. Besides excelling in their academic studies, they were also outstanding in their Co-Curricular Activities, obtaining A1 for their performance, an affirmation of their ability to balance their studies with CCA as well as the school’s success in the holistic development of the pupils. They were definitely not alone in celebrating their academic success! The 4NA, 4NT, 4E and 5NA cohorts all did the school proud with their performances at the 2008 GCE ‘O’ and ‘N’ examinations.

AWARDS

Green Audit Award Riverside Secondary School has been an annual participant of the Singapore Environment Council’s How Green Is Your School Project. The school’s efforts in improving the green environment and advocating the awareness of loving and conserving the school environment has qualified the school for the Lotus Award 2008 to 2010. The Lotus Award is the highest award in the Green Audit Awards and this is the first time that the school has attained this prestigious award. Part of the green effort came from the formation of the Green Club which consists of Green Ambassadors from every class.

Art pieces entitled ‘Woodlands is my Home’ in a recycling competition

Republic Polytechnic Plastic Bottle Challenge

Our National Police Cadet Corps (NPCC) and Infocomm Club participated in the Republic Polytechnic’s North and West Cluster Plastic Bottles Challenge this year as part of their Community Involvement Programme. In alignment with Riverside’s R3 Day – Reuse, Reduce and Recycle, our NPCC cadets and Infocomm members embarked on the journey of recycling plastic bottles. This project not only raised awareness of the importance of recycling amongst all Riversidians, including staff, it also served as an excellent platform for NPCC cadets and Infocomm Club members to do their part as members of the community. With passion and enthusiasm from members of the two CCAs and the continuous support from the Riverside student population and staff, Riverside collected a total of 11,050 plastic bottles within a month, emerging 3rd in the challenge! Campus ChangeMaker Panelist Training Thirty-one student leaders were selected to be the pioneer Campus ChangeMaker Panelists. They will be tasked with assessing the proposals written by their peers on innovation and school improvement. In order to be equipped with communication and practical skills to make quality assessments, they were given training on writing proposals, service-learning and grant-making guidelines on 7 and 9 Feb 2009. Subsequently, on 5-7 March 2009, the Campus ChangeMaker panelists attended another round of training which were focused on how to assess proposals and guide applicants through the process. The training on 5-6 March involved meetings led by a trainer, who was also a former Young ChangeMaker panelist. Riverside panelists picked up many learning points when she related her experience as a student panelist and learnt the underlying concepts of being a panelist, namely, the prerequisites of being a panelist. On 7 March, all panelists attended the training on work ethics. The training helped them to apply the knowledge they had gained over the past two days. They played games that tapped on their communication and critical thinking skills, such as “the Yellow River” and “Trust fall”. They also did case-studies on real proposals and presented their opinions to the other panelists. On the whole, these training sessions were highly beneficial. Level 2 Leadership Training

The leadership training programme organised for all Level 2 Leaders - Co-curricular Activities (CCA) executive committee and school team members - was successfully carried out on 5 and 6 March. A total of 59 student leaders from various CCAs attended the training conducted by TOUCH Services on leadership, service learning and effective communication. Through the training, students were expected to build up their leadership qualities and be able to apply their skills in school and in their lives. This training coincided with the school’s launch of the Campus ChangeMaker project and as part of the training requirement. Student Leaders’ Meeting On 16 January 2009, Level 2 and 3 leaders of various CCAs attended a leadership briefing cum dialogue session with the new Vice-Principal, Mr Remington Chen. The first part of the meeting was conducted by Miss Jasmine Lim (Acting Subject Head for Student Leadership) who briefed students on the revised Student Leadership Model and the conduct of student leaders in school. For the dialogue session with Mr Chen, student leaders were first asked to think of questions and feedback on improvements to CCA. It was a fruitful session for the student leaders because they were given the opportunity to offer improvements to their CCAs and school life. RS INTERNATIONALISATION

Singapore-Japan Exchange Programme (07 to 16 December 2008) Riverside Secondary School students and staff arrived at the Fukuoka Airport in the early morning of 8 December 2008. This was the first ever trip organised by our school under the sponsorship of the JENESYS Programme and facilitated by Miyazaki-Singapore Economic Friendship Council. A total of 22 Secondary 3 to Secondary 5 students were selected for the trip. Our programme consisted of visits to Fukuoka and two junior high schools. The staff and students were involved in various cultural activities like traditional puppetry, ancient archery and the tea ceremony. We even visited an orchard where we experienced picking oranges. We also visited Mt Aso where we saw an active volcano emitting fumes. The visit to Udo Shrine allowed Riversidians the opportunity to see how local people practised their religion and preserve their beliefs. The visit to the Nagasaki Peace Park enabled students to “re-live” the event of the atomic bomb.

The students stayed in a hostel situated on high altitude. They learnt how to set their beds every night and how to pack them up every morning. They thoroughly enjoyed the Japanese food served in the hostel canteen. They also practised good social skills when bathing in the communal baths and cleaning up the hostel every day. The main highlight of the trip was the visit to Miyazaki namely Tano Junior High School and Hongou Junior High School in Miyazaki. Our students were warmly received by the two schools and they interacted actively with the Japanese students. Our students even had the opportunity to showcase their RS dance and a Japanese song to the staff and students at Hongou Junior High School. One of the most enjoyable activities during the visit was having lunch in the classroom with the Japanese students. Our students were given the opportunity to serve lunch to the Japanese students.

Apart from the visits, our students had a 2-night stay with the host families. In order to show our appreciation to the host families and the Miyazaki-Singapore Friendship Council, the students again performed the RS dance and a rendition of Sukiyaki, a famous Japanese song for them. The trip was an eye-opener for the staff and pupils. We have indeed gained a better understanding and appreciation of Japanese culture. RS INTERNATIONALISATION

Batam Trip From 7 to 10 December 2008, 22 Riverside Secondary School choir members participated in the Festival of Choirs titled ‘Jubilate III’ which was held in Batam, Indonesia. This festival was created to help develop and improve the choral standards through a series of choral workshops, music exposure and public performances. During the workshops, the members learnt new choral skills from 3 renowned international clinicians namely, Mr Johnny Ku Yu-Chung from Taiwan, Mr Arvip Priatna from Indonesia and Mr Arwin Tan from the Philippines. The members also experienced the joy of singing through choral exchange with 10 other schools. We discovered new and exciting choral music from around the world through the evening concerts and gained valuable experiences by performing in front of live audiences. On top of that, we visited the orphanage and interacted with more than 20 children in the homes. On one hand, the children at the orphanage learnt English Language through fun-filled activities such as singing, origami and drawing. On the other hand, our members learnt to cherish life and not to take things for granted. It was indeed a memorable and valuable learning experience for all. Trip to Malacca From 12 to13 February 2009, all Secondary 2E students and their form teachers went on an educational cum cultural trip to Malacca. Apart from widening the students’ knowledge of different cultures and traditions and exposing them to a different learning environment, students were able to bond together and develop teamwork amongst themselves. RS DANCE FEST 2008

The annual RS Dance Fest was staged at Republic Polytechnic on 21 October 2008, following the successful RS Arts Fest in 2007. The event was memorable as it showcased the exuberant talents of Riversidians from the various dance groups, together with performers from Evergreen Primary School, Sembawang Secondary School and the Capoeiro Group from Republic Polytechnic. In addition, students from Sec 1/7 (2008) were selected to showcase a Chinese puppet dance which they had learnt during their Dance Curriculum. Mr Chong Shu Chi, the dance instructor who teaches the Dance Curriculum also performed a solo dance which took our breath away. The RS Dance Fest definitely developed our character through the appreciation of the arts, and understanding of various cultures depicted in the dances.

SCHOOL EVENTS

Graduation Day 2008 September 26, 2008 marked a milestone in the lives of our graduating students of 2008. That was the day when they gathered in the hall to officially bid farewell to the school. The morning events started with a short but inspiring message from the Principal, Mrs Sng Siew Hong, who also presented everyone with a token gift. Then, class by class, represented by the respective chairpersons, they

reminisced through video clips and presentations of the past 4 to 5 years that they spent in Riverside. They were also treated to lunch sponsored by the canteen vendors. P6 Open House Riverside had its P6 Open House on 15 Nov 2008. Our aim was to showcase our academic and CCA achievements to primary six pupils to help them decide which secondary school they would select. The day started out with a concert touching on the academic aspects of our school. It was followed by parents and students taking a tour around the school visiting

the various booths put up by the various co-curricular activities. Special thanks go to the various teachers and Riversidians who had made this Open House a huge success. CCA Exploration Week Many Secondary 1 students, new to the school, had no idea as to which Co-Curricular Activity (CCA) they should take up. Thus, Riverside Secondary School came up with “CCA Exploration Week in 2009” to help Secondary 1 students to choose their CCA. This was carried out for 3 weeks in January. I explored a few CCAs to have a feel of what each was like. As I was more interested in the arts, I tried out the Art Club. I also went to find out

about Indian Dance. It was certainly an eye-opener. I was amazed to see the dedication of the dancers. After the exploration, I filled up my six choices on the form and chose Art Club as my first choice. International Friendship Day International Friendship Day was celebrated on 31 March 2009 where our two NE Champs presented on the importance of ASEAN in maintaining cooperation and friendly relations among Southeast Asian countries. This was followed by an interesting sharing about Indonesia by Leonardo Sjahputra from Secondary 3/9. He spoke about the differences in the education system between Singapore and Indonesia. Sec 1 Orientation Camp The 2-day Secondary 1 Orientation Camp was held from 9 January to 10 January 2009. On the first day, we played several ice-breaker games and that really helped us to know one another better. The orientation group leaders (OGLs) were very active in helping us bond together. They taught us “cheers” and games which we really enjoyed. We also participated in the station games which were held in the school field and parade square. These games promoted team spirit which is one of the RS school values. The next day, we had our mass games at various venues around the school compound. We had to look for the venues ourselves. My favourite activity of the camp was the campfire. My class put up a fine performance. When the results were announced, our class won 2 awards! We had the best cheer. It was indeed an energetic night filled with screams and cheers. I am sure all the Secondary 1 students enjoyed this camp thoroughly. It was certainly exhausting but unforgettable. Chinese New Year Celebration Riverside celebrated Chinese New Year on 23 January 2009. The student representatives went into all the classes to conduct a Chinese New Year quiz. The students were keen to participate as prizes were given away. After working our brains, it was time to feast our eyes on the performances put up by the various dance groups, including the Malay Special Programme and the Chinese Special Programme students. In line with this year’s Chinese New Year theme, “Go Green”, many classes made use of recycled materials to decorate their classrooms. It was indeed a tough fight. “CANNED OR NOT” PROJECT 2009

In February, the school partnered NorthWest CDC in the “Canned or Not” Project 2009 to collect canned food for the needy families in the Marsiling area. Besides getting the students to contribute the canned food items, members of the Parents’ Support Group (PSG), alumni and school staff also helped in one way or another. The school staff donated 100 bottles of cooking oil to the project. 6 National Education (NE) Champs helped in collecting the items from class to class, sorting and packing them neatly into the boxes provided. E-Learning Programme A 2-day E-learning Programme was organised for all Sec 1 and 2NA/ NT pupils on 12 and 13 February 2009. The aim of this programme was to offer pupils a platform for independent learning and to improve on their IT skills. For these two days, students stayed at home and used their computers to gain access into IT lessons of various subjects. Secondary 4 & 5 National Education (NE) Speaker’s Corner The NE Speaker’s Corner for Secondary 4 and 5 students was kickstarted in March 2008. Selected students prepared a speech on a NE topic. To provide the right ambience for the NE Forum, the event was held at the NE Room in the library. The lively discussion after the speeches had certainly enabled students to gain a greater awareness of NE issues. Learning Journey – The Fun Way! Riverside’s Learning Journey was held on 11 February 2009 as part of our NE programme to get to know more about Singapore. As of last year, students from all levels choose the places they want to visit, for example, the Singapore National Museum, Changi Airport Terminals, Haw Par Villa, Kusu Island, Singapore Discovery Centre, Hippo Duck Tour and Tiger Brewery, Singapore Discovery Centre, Singapore Mint, Marina Barrage, Food Factories, Peranakan Museum and Centre for Animal Welfare & Control. At Haw Par Villa and Terminal 3, an amazing race was organized to get the students fully involved in the history of the place. Learning Journey Day has indeed enabled students to gain a better understanding of Singapore in a funloving way.

PHYSICAL Sec 3 Level - Overseas Adventure Camp On 12 February 2009, all Secondary 3 students left for Kota Tinggi in Malaysia for a 3-day 2-night fun-filled adventure camp. The conditions were harsh, it gave us a taste of hard life so that we could learn to become more resilient. The activities were many and fun. Abseiling, Flying fox, Jetty jump, River Cascading, Indiana Jones and Kayaking were just some of the activities designed to make us commune with Nature and bring out the adventurer in us.

Our instructors were jovial and sociable. We had a rollicking good time with them. Friday night ended with a bang with the campfire. Due to the rain, there was no actual “campfire” but our teachers and instructors worked hard to make it the perfect night! Most of us felt sorry to leave the next day. Sports Carnival A mini torch relay marked the start of Sports Carnival 2009. The theme for this year’s sports carnival was “Respect the Spirit of Sports”. Led by the level deans and a small group of student leaders, the torch, designed by two Riversidians, was finally passed to our former vice-principal, Mrs Hilda Thong who lit the fire. The first item were the core games: Captain’s Ball for the Secondary ones, Rugby for the Secondary twos, Frisbee for the Secondary threes, and Handball for the Secondary fours and fives. Through the core games, competitiors learnt about friendship, fairplay, and teamwork. Unfortunately, the bad weather in the afternoon halted the rest of the activities, and the carnival was forced to end early. Nevertheless, the students enjoyed themselves tremendously. Mass Run The annual Mass Run was held on 9 April 2009 at Innova Junior College. The aim of the mass run is to provide the opportunity for students to participate in rigorous physical activity in a rugged terrain. It also enables students to demonstrate a healthy competitive spirit by participating in the 2.4km run. Farewell from Mrs Hilda Thong

In recognition of her hard work and good service standards, Mdm Suriyati, our Operations Support Officer (OSO), received the Excellent Service Award (Silver) managed by SPRING Singapore on 3 December 2008.

When I bade farewell to colleagues who were leaving Riverside in the past, I always reminded them that ‘Once a Riversidian, Always a Riversidian!’ Now that it is my turn to leave to pursue my Leaders in Education Programme from 23 March 2009, I am beginning to fully appreciate how it feels to say goodbye to the school, which has not just been a workplace, but a second home where I have spent seven memorable years, from the time I was posted in as a Head of Department for English Language in 2003 to becoming a Vice-Principal in 2006.

Staff Conference 2008 The 2008 year-end staff conference was held at Bukit Batok Civil Service Club on 30 December. It was a day for the staff to consolidate the various programmes and initiatives for 2009. The staff conference also provided us with the opportunity to celebrate the achievements of 2008. The day ended with a bowling session - an activity for us to foster better relationship. It was truly a day for the staff of Riverside to consolidate, communicate, collaborate, connect and celebrate.

During this period of time, I have had the privilege of working with many wonderful colleagues who over the years have become my friends. In working in teams, it is inevitable to encounter times when we had our differences. But we overcame these by staying focused on working towards a shared vision, as a result of which, the RSp2Irit (school values) has truly continued to be strengthened. To our pupils, I have held and always will hold the belief that each and everyone of you are unique, talented and have the potential to soar to greater heights, like the many generations of your seniors before you. With the robust programmes under the RS Holistic Development LAM2PS Framework, you can surely succeed if you strive to not just being your best, but ‘My Best and More’! I wish Riverside Secondary School, the staff and pupils even greater success in the near future and I will always pride myself of being a member of this excellent institution.
