Relative Clauses
What is a relative clause? We
visit our uncle. He comes from Poland. A relative clause joins the two, using a relative pronoun. e.g We visit our uncle who comes from Poland.
Accusative case Wir besuchen unseren Onkel.
Unser Onkel kommt aus Polen.
Nominative Case
First we decide what gender to use depending on the gender of the original noun. (Here it was a single masculine word. (uncle)
However then we have to decide what case to use, depending on the role the relative pronoun plays in that second clause. Here it was the nominative. The uncle lives in Poland. (Subject of the sentence.)
Wir besuchen unseren Onkel, der aus Polen kommt. Masculine, Singular & Nominative
(Note: relative pronouns send the verb to the end)
REMEMBER We use the first part of the sentence to decide the gender of the relative pronoun and we use the second part of the sentence to decide the case.

Relative pronouns 1 The relative clause can start with the accusative, dative, genitive or a preposition. Accusative The man whom I saw yesterday is not there today. Der Mann, den ich gestern gesehen habe, ist heute nicht da.
Relative pronouns 2 Dative The girl I write a letter to is English. Das Mädchen, dem ich einen Brief schreibe, ist Englisch.
Relative pronouns 3 Genetive Ist that the man, whose car you like? Ist das der Mann, dessen Auto du magst?
Relative pronouns 4 After a preposition The man with whom we are speaking…. Der Mann, mit dem wir sprechen….. The house in which I live, is…. Das Haus, in dem ich wohne, ist…. The men from whom we received letters.. Die Männer, von denen wir Briefe bekommen haben…
The case of the relative pronoun depends on its role within the relative clause. In which case are the following rel. prons.? Der Mann, dem ich helfe, heißt Henry. Die Mädchen, die Tennis spielen, sind nett. Das Kaninchen, das ich gekauft habe, ist lieb. Stefan, dessen Freundin in Berlin studiert, spielt Klavier.
Herr Schmidt, dessen Sohn in einer Schule arbeitet, ist jetzt Rentner. Der Junge, den ich in der Schule gesehen habe, ist freundlich. Die Frau, mit der ich ins Kino gegangen bin, heißt Angela Schmidt. Die Frauen, denen ich viel Geld gegeben habe, sind jetzt sehr reich.
