Author’s Bio: Linden Gross is the author of To Have Or To Harm (Warner, 1994), the first book ever written about the stalking of ordinary people. Her investigation into the crime of stalking for two Cosmopolitan magazine articles had previously revealed the devastating human dimensions of a problem on the rise. Casual conversation with friends, colleagues, and even strangers on airplanes had revealed its prevalence in even more immediate fashion. One out of every three had either been stalked or knew someone who had. Yet no book had ever tackled the issue. To Have Or To Harm was followed by a revised, updated and expanded version titled Surviving a Stalker: Everything You Need to Know to Keep Yourself Safe. This critical book offers victims even more help than the acclaimed original, with lessons at the end of each chapter, and new chapters about cyberstalking, how to get away safely should that finally become necessary, and how to safeguard one’s emotional, as well as physical, wellbeing. Equally important, Surviving a Stalker teaches individuals how to: • • • •

Avoid the most common mistakes when dealing with stalkers. Recognize and control those natural reactions that might put them at risk. Handle inappropriate attention before it escalates into stalking. Protect their privacy and safety, as well as that of loved ones.

As before, professionals who deal with stalking can gain insight through the book’s numerous case studies, detailed analyses of mishandled stalking cases involving public figures and ordinary individuals (both on and off the job), and newly added coverage of the latest approaches in case management and deterrence. Gross is also proud to announce the establishment of her new non-profit organization — Stalking Survivors’ Sanctuary & Solutions — whose board of

directors includes: • •

• • •

Bob Martin, vice-president of Gavin de Becker Incorporated Wayne Maxey, criminal investigator with the special investigations division of the San Diego District Attorney’s Office Marc Dubin, executive director of CAVNET Mark Wynn, stalking & domestic violence case management trainer Pete Conis, Ph.D., former Stop Violence Against Women grant program director for the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy Jane McAllister, stalking survivor & activist.

The non-profit organization’s mission will be to educate people about stalking and how to cope with it, and to further understanding about the problem’s dynamics and possible solutions. This will be accomplished through a series of publications, documentaries and videos directed to professionals, survivors, employees, and the public at large. Teen curricula and video games focusing on appropriate vs. inappropriate relationships and communication skills will be developed. Gross’ http://www.stalkingvictims.com/ website will be expanded to include a professional’s resource center with the latest research, techniques and tools, and a live chat room featuring monthly interactive talks from experts in the field. The site, which garners 5,000 hits a week, currently features several information pages about stalking, as well as a moderated discussion board, which functions as the country’s only national support group for survivors. In her capacity as a magazine journalist, Gross has written about tenants battling harassment for Ms., about Steven Spielberg’s Survivors of the Shoah Foundation for the Reader’s Digest, and about how the town of Valdez coped with the 1989 oil spill for the Ladies’ Home Journal. In addition to the two articles about stalking which prompted her first book, Gross has also written a feature about women vice cops for Cosmopolitan, as well as an investigative article about how the tabloids fabricate their sensationalized celebrity-related cover stories. Prior to freelancing full-time, Gross held staff positions on the Los Angeles Times Magazine, where she was the special features editor, and at the Ladies’ Home Journal, where she worked as an associate editor. She currently resides in Northern California. Order the Book
