Career options after SPM
Propel yourself into the World
of IT
Gone are the days when one was considered a geek, if one was from the IT industry. In fact, IT has become a desired alternative for many. Times Guides spoke to Mr. Gurpardeep Singh, who is the Director of Operations from APIIT Malaysia, for an insight into what the industry holds for local graduates. What are the popular career options in the field of IT?
The commonest include: Software development, encompassing programming, systems design and development, and software project management. Infrastructure management, including systems administration, network design and management and database administration Web and interactive (multimedia) development Mobile Computing - mobile systems development and mobile architectures Enterprise computing – applications which are closely aligned to business processes and using ERP tools such as SAP.
What advice would you give to prospective students who are thinking about careers in IT? Especially, for SPM students. Usually, students would be expected to do well in Mathematics or in a numerical subject. English proficiency is also essential. To enrol for a Degree programme, students need to achieve at least five credits in SPM, in order to join Degree Foundation Programmes. To enrol for Diplomas, three credits would be sufficient.
What qualities do students need in order to succeed with an IT Degree?
There is a combination of specialist and generic skills required to obtain an IT degree. Every IT student needs to develop an understanding of these aspects for example, mobile computing, and security among others. Starting with a sound theoretical base in these areas, they should then be able to translate theory to practice, through intensive, industrystrength projects. Students also need to develop strong analytical skills, creativity and innovation, and also communication, presentation and research capabilities. There is also a need to develop strong team working capability.
What is currently the most popular IT course among Malaysian students?
The most popular IT course is the Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Computing and the Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Information
Technology. Both enable students to develop a broad range of specialist IT skills and take up specialist modules to develop in their particular areas of interest.
What core areas are covered by the course?
The areas covered include Software Development, Networks, databases and Multimedia/Web Technologies. Supplementing these are studies in Mathematics, Business and Management, and Transferable skills such as communication, research and team work, and professional development.
How much emphasis is placed on theoretical knowledge and practical skills?
A strong theoretical foundation is essential, but this should then be translated into practical ability through intensive projects throughout the programme, starting even from the first year of study. This will help students sharpen their problem-solving capability and inculcate a strong project management discipline, which are essential for their working life.
Can students complete the programme overseas or is it possible to take everything in Malaysia?
Students can complete the programme entirely in Malaysia. However, they should ensure that the programme is internationally benchmarked through rigorous external Quality Assurance processes and standards.
Other thoughts?
There are tremendous opportunities in the Malaysian IT industry, which is expected to generate at least 100,000 jobs in the next few years. However, students must ensure that they choose programmes which not only emphasise on academic development, but also those which require them to carry out industry-type projects. This will enable them to develop strong professional skills. In addition, as technology evolves very rapidly, students must develop the ability to “learn how to learn” new skills, and to not be dependent purely on technologies covered during their programme of study. This will ensure that they succeed not only in their first jobs, but also in securing a long-term career in the global IT industry.
