Psychopathology - Dictionary Definition: o the science or study of mental disorders o the conditions and processes of a mental disorder o a pathological deviation from normal or efficient behavior; psychosis - impairment to normal functioning - distress to oneself to others around them - outside the realm of one’s cultural norm - does not come from a medical condition Differential Diagnosis - Dictionary Definition: o Determination of which one of two or more diseases with similar symptoms is the one from which the patient is suffering. - Shows signs of both, try to figure out which one - Subject shows signs of depression o irritable, frustrated, defiant o not sure if childhood depression or from oppositional/defiant behavior Comorbidity - Dictionary Definition: o Coexistence with another disease or condition - someone who could have more than one diagnosis o substance abuse & anxiety disorder substance abuse from self medicating for anxiety - bipolar is typically comorbid with substance abuse Presentation - cognitive disorders o 9/13/06 o Handouts o Famous people, literature o 45 min each o Case vignettes
