Proof of Efficacy Document- Holly Jossart ‘You Have the Power’ Energy Transfer Device. Thermochemistry project

1. Photos of your energy device

2. Written description of your design including steps of energy transfer Our thermochemistry project entailed making a music box work by using different energy sources. Originally we wanted to power a music box using energy from a solar power. However, due to the sky being constantly cloudy, powering the solar panel was difficult. We did shine our phone lights on it but it did not produce enough Voltage to power a motor. Below is our original plan.

As seen in the blueprint, the energy from the sun would produce energy in the solar panel. The energy would power the motor, turning the music box. Although the solar panel did not work out, if it had, the photons would be knocking electrons free from atoms inside the solar panel. Solar panels have photovoltaic cells that allow energy to generate. After our initial plan of using a solar panel did not work, we focused on using potatoes to generate electricity. Potatoes act as a salt bridge for the two metal conductors. The electron current can move across the wire and create electricity. However after a couple of tests with the potatoes, we moved to lemons and grapefruits. We found that citrus fruits conducted more electricity. This is because the fruits had citric acid which carries electrolytes. Electrolytes work better as a conductor than starches. Once we figured this out, we stopped using potatoes and focused on making the fruits better conductors. We also cut the fruits in half to create more surface area. Once we figured out the energy, we were going to connect it to our motor to power the music box. However our music box magically disappeared and we had to change our project a bit. In the end, we used fruit to power a music card speaker. Usually they are powered by small round batteries, however we tried to get enough volts from the fruit to power the speaker. 3. As described above, we modified our energy source, we cut the fruits in half, and we changed the end result of our project. We also curled the copper and cut bigger strips of zinc to further increase surface area. (See 2 for in depth explanation) 4. Technical Specifications for your energy device including: Definitions of energy sources manifested - Audio energy was about 90 decibels. Audio energy is the movement or vibration of the air particles. Measurement of energy output - 1.9 volts from the grapefruit. Measurement of energy transfers - We were unable to get the energy from the fruits to make the device work. Molecular Blueprints - refer above to blueprint design. Solar panel has molecular blueprinting. 5. Main selling points of your design Our device is cheap to make, it requires simple tools, and it will play lovely music.
