GROUP DYNAMICS

Learning objectives • To understand the nature and types of group. • To understand concept of teams and types of team. • To know the stages of team formation. • To understand factors affecting group dynamics and effectiveness. • To understand the impact of group think and maturity on group dyanmic.

What is group? A group is any number of people who share goals,often communicate with one another over a period of time and are few enough so that each individual may communicate with all the other person-to-person.

Teams The dictionary gives the word team the meaning of “lump” or “mass”. A general definition is “a small number of people with complementary skills who are committed to a common purpose, set of performance goals, and approach for which they hold themselves mutually accountable”. “Man can only make progress in a cooperative teams.”

Remedies to over come group think Organizational remedies • Multiple groups examine same issue • Teach managers methods they can use to recognize and overcomes symptoms.

Leader oriented remedies • Encourage all members to evaluate ideas critically • Bring in outsiders to evaluate ideas critically.

Process-oriented remedies

• Use subgroups to develop alternatives and compare solutions. • Compare to other organization solutions. • Prior to implementation, hold “second chance” meetings.

Member oriented remedies

• Make no decision until all ideas have been evaluated. • Go outside the group for opinions and share them afterwards.
