The Profile of Fisherfolks in Iligan City I. Introduction/Background: The City Government of Iligan through the Local Chief Executive, Mayor Lawrence Ll. Cruz has entered a Memorandum of Agreement with the Department of Labor and Employment for the implementation of the Integrated Services for Livelihood Advancement (ISLA) of fisherfolks in Iligan City. This program comprises of four (4) components such as: the setting up of common marketing facility, establishment of alternative livelihood, acquisition of fishing materials and equipment and strengthening of fisherfolk’s organizations. The Department of Labor and Employment provided P4 Million funding to the program and the City Government allocated P350,000.00 for the capacity building of fisherfolks which include simplified bookkeeping, directorship, leadership and other training needs. Part of the program activities is the conduct of profiling to determine who these fisherfolks in the city are and what economic conditions they are in. II. Objectives The objectives of the profiling are: 1. To know the characteristics and profile of fisherfolks in Iligan City in terms of: a. educational level; b. per capita income; c. years of residency; d. years in fishing; e. availability of recording system; f. social protection coverage; g. number of employees; h. gender; i. civil status; j. age k. type of assistance needed; l. membership to organization. m. other source of income n. major problems encountered 2. To create a database and a directory of fisherfolks in Iligan City; 3. To identify the specific condition of fisherfolks and their respective needs; III. Methodology The profiling was conducted using the questionnaire and interviews. The Questionnaire (see Annex A) is consist of 20 questions in local dialect. It is used simultaneously with the interview. The respondents’ answers to the interview have been recorded in this questionnaire form by the interviewer.

The schedule of profiling was done in coordination with the barangay council through its chairperson on the committee of livelihood and the officers of the respective fisherfolks association. IV. Scope and Limitations The profiling was conducted only along the coastal barangays (villages) from January 26 to February 11, 2009. This is limited to 782 respondents who have been interviewed during that period. V. Results and Findings Below are the graphical results and summary of findings: 1. VI. Conclusions Based on the results and findings, it is concluded that:  Majority (89 %) of the fisherfolks do not reach college  Majority (90%) of the fisherfolks have age of 35 years and above  Majority (90%) of the fisherfolks have less than P2,000.00 Per Capita Income  Majority (97%) of the fisherfolks are residents in the community 6 years and above  Majority (95%) of the fisherfolks are in fishing occupation 6 years and above  Majority (98%) of the fisherfolks do not have financial records  Majority (52%) of the fisherfolks do not SSS and Philhealth coverage  Majority (98%) of the fisherfolks do not employ other people  Majority (85%) of the fisherfolks are married  Majority of the fisherfolks are engaged in the service sector such as in construction and transportation as their alternative source of livelihood  All (100%) of the fisherfolks are male  Top 3 major problems: 1.
