Jerry Maynard Supports Term Limits (Nashville, August 22) – Jerry Maynard, a candidate for Metro Council At Large, has come out in support of amending the Metro Charter to clarify ambiguities in the law which was supposed to limit elected officials within the Metro Government to two terms. Recently, a Metro Court dismissed a case brought by Philip Hostettler against Council Candidates who went from being term-limited in their district council seats, to running for Council At Large. “I don’t wish to involve myself in the matters before the court,” said Jerry Maynard, who is also a local attorney, “However, I do think that the voters of Metro Nashville made it clear that they want Council Members to be limited to two terms on the Council. That is why, once in office, I will work to bring forth a referendum which will clarify the language in the Charter, so that the will of the people is clear, and does not require judicial interpretation.” Maynard, who came in 5th in the race for Metro Council At Large on August 2nd, believes that in 1994 the voters intended to limit the Metro Council members to two terms, and we should follow the will of the people. “Under current rules as interpreted by Metro, a councilman could effectively remain on the Council indefinitely, bouncing from District to At Large every 8 years. I find this to be fundamentally opposed to the intent of the 77% of voters in Metro Nashville, who wanted to ensure fresh ideas and faces were on Metro’s legislative body.” Jerry Maynard is running for Council At Large in the September 11th runoff, and is one of 8 people vying for 4 open spots. Of the 8, Jerry came in fourth in the amount of votes cast for him, and is in a strong position to win in the upcoming election. ### 941 35th Ave North, Nashville, TN 37209 Paid for by Maynard for Council – Robert Tuke, Treasurer http://www.maynardforcouncil.com
