TOPIC:
WOOL FABRICS
Basically, there are two different processes used in wool production. 1: woolen yarn Fabrics. 2: worsted yarn Fabrics.
Woolen Yarn Fabrics
A general term describing various fabrics woven from woolen yarn. Woolen yarn is spun from the shorter wool fibers. Which are not combed to lie flat as in worsted yarn. Woolen yarns are more suitable for knitting, sweaters or fluffy blankets.
Woolen Yarn Characteristics:
Woolen
yarn are warmer than worsted yarn. Durability is not good as worsted yarn. Due to smooth surface it catches dust and dirt. Stain are easily erasable.
Worsted yarn Fabrics
Worsted yarn is spun from the longer fibers of the fleece. The fiber is usually combed with wool combs. This removes short fibers. Only the prime, longer fleece is used to produce worsted fabrics. Worsted wool refers to tightly woven, smooth, clear finished goods in a variety of twill and other stronger weaves.
Worsted yarn characteristics:
Have a very high level of fiber alignment with almost all fibers following the helical path imposed by twist. Hence they are very regular. Have very few fiber ends protruding from the yarn surface, so have smooth handle and appearance.
Tend to be stronger (for similar twist and fiber length). Minimum of around 40 fibers in yarn cross-section (compared to a lower limit of around 110 fibers needed for a typical woolen-spun yarn).
Types of Wool Fabric
Merino Wool Fabric is made from the fleece of the Merino sheep. It is extremely soft and fine with "whiteness" that dyes into clear pure color. Merino wool fabric is some of the best quality produced and is said to resemble cashmere.
Tartan wool fabrics have a twilled plaid design and originate from Scotland. Tartans are used to identify Scottish families and clans and are made into kilts, scarves, sashes, ties etc. .
Tweed Tweed is known for the little nubs of color that are found throughout the fabric. Tweeds are often multi-colored and used in sportswear.
Wool Jacquard Wool Jacquard is made from worsted yarns and has a complex woven pattern. Both sides of jacquard wool fabric can be used in constructing clothes or decorator items.
Challis Challis wool fabric is usually made from worsted yarn and is very soft and lightweight. It is often printed with floral or paisley patterns.
Flannel Flannel wool fabrics are woven from either woolen or worsted yarns. They are usually identified by their fuzzy surface and are often used for shirts, pants, skirts, and jackets.
Gabardine Gabardine is firmly woven from worsted yarn with a tight twill weave. It is easily identified by the diagonal parallel ribs on the face of the fabric.
Herringbone Herringbone is woven from either woolen or worsted yarns. It has a pronounced zigzag twill pattern on the fabric surface.
Houndstooth Houndstooth Check has a four pointed star check in a broken twill weave.
Jersey Jersey is a lightweight wool fabric with distinct knit stitches on one side and rounded purl stitches on the other.
