What is Tropical Cyclone ? A gigantic mass of revolving moist air A storm system - Low pressure centre - Numerous thunderstorms
- area of low atmospheric pressure near the Earth’s surface - Driven by the release of large amounts of latent heat of condensation Fig.1
Moist air
Heat is released + Water Vapour in the air condenses
• Heat - distributed vertically around the centre of the storm
• The environment inside the cyclone is warmer Warmer
The structure of tropical cyclone
• divided into - Rain bands - Eye
Rain bands: - Bands of showers and thunderstorms - Spiral cyclonically toward the centre - Tornadoes often form in them Eye: - The centre of a tropical cyclone - An area of sinking area - Circular in shape
Tropical Cyclones Cyclone Nargis - Category 4 cyclone - a strong Tropical Cyclones (caused the deadliest natural disaster)
Many areas suffered 1) Yangon 2) Pegu 3) Mon 4) Ayeyarwady
Cyclone Nargis - Occurred on 3rd May , 2008
How was the
Cyclone Nargis formed?
•
developed on April 27 in the central area of Bay of Bengal
•
tracked slowly northwestward quickly strengthened
•
dry air weakened the cyclone on April 29 beginning a steady eastward motion
•
intensified to attain peak winds of at least 165 km/h (105 mph) on May 2
• assessed peak winds of 215 km/h (135 mph) • moved ashore in the Ayeyarwady Division of Burma near peak intensity • after passing near the major city of Rangoon the storm gradually weakened until dissipating near the border of Burma and Thailand
Cyclone Nargis impact 'bigger than tsunami'
economic loss blocked roads
landslides
deaths & casualties
Effects homeless
flooding felled trees food shortage
Flooding
Fishing boats in Rangoon harbor destroyed by the storm Monks wade through floodwaters in Rangoon
Before
Cyclone Nargis Floods Burma
After
Damages • At least 134,000 people (dead or missing) • Estimate total number severely affected:2.4 million people • $10 billion loss • Basic infrastructures (e.g. buildings, hospitals) were destroyed
Famine
Residents line up to get rice after cyclone Nargis hit the town of Phyar Pon
The influence of the cyclone lowered temperatures along the Indian coastline
How should the world respond to Burma? ★intensify international economic and poltical pressure on junta leaders ★Provide aid ★Donate money ★Help with the recover work ★Supply resources
