World & South Florida Premieres during Sleepless Night Miami Beach, FL – Spontaneous animation, invisible architecture, and a seven-storyhigh electric harp are just three of the close to 20 South Florida and world premieres featured at Audi Sleepless Night 2009. More than 150 amazing encounters to be had on the this free, 13-hour, dusk-til-dawn, citywide celebration of the arts that begins at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 7. This year’s event includes several South Florida and world premieres among the unforgettable arts and entertainment experiences presented for all tastes and all ages, all night long, all for free. COLLINS PARK NIGHT SHIFT: 9 Installations curated by Jerome Sans Meet the artists 7:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m., DJ 10:00 p.m. - Midnight Jerome Sans will act as both a curator and DJ for the Night Shift exhibition commissioned by the Bass Museum of Art and the Miami Beach Cultural Arts Council. Nine prominent South Florida artists present site-specific installations on the Collins Park lawn around the museum and east of Collins Avenue. Pieces range from the giant Earth sphere that visitors can view from the inside-out to a live, outdoor soap opera. CONVENTION CENTER HALL “D” Ray Lee’s “Siren” performance/installation Four shows: 7:00 p.m., 9:00 p.m., 11:00 p.m., 1:00 a.m. Ray Lee is an artist, performer, and composer who works with electro-magnetic radiation to build large scale sound installations. Siren is a fascinating 45-minute show combining theater, sculpture, light and sound into a suspenseful, one-of-a-kind experience. The French performer’s style is a unique blend of contemporary African dance and street culture. In a series of solos and duets, Dossavi plays with dance and music in an abstract yet seamless way. miamilightproject.com PLAZA ESPANA STAGE, ESPANOLA WAY “Remnants and Umbrellas 8-12” 9:00 p.m – 1:00 a.m. Miami Beach Cinematheque and Thought Loom present Remnants and Umbrellas 8-12, a film event that features the work of Jacques Demy and Agnes Varda. Films will be played on the Plaza de España – on strategically placed canvases, on large umbrellas throughout the space, even on palm trees outfitted with mirrors. Theopentent.org Animate Objects Physical Theater “Bounce Theory” 8:00 p.m. Animate Objects Physical Theater’s new show “Bounce Theory” combines aerial dance and athletic aerobics with Ocean Drive as the backdrop. With an electrifying pulse, Bounce Theory takes dancers to the sky in aerial hoops, trampolines, pulleys and stretchy elastic bungee cords forty feet above the sands of South Beach for a truly mesmerizing spectacle. Bounce Theory’s cast of scientists conduct gutsy experiments with disregard to gravity in an oversized physical laboratory/playground. Deep Surface 9:00 p.m. Composer Gabriel E. Pulido presents his “homage to the sea” with a multimedia concert that combines electronic and live music with dance and video-sculptures. This premier performance is sponsored by the Ocean Foundation and the Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO. deep-surface.org South Beach Chamber Ensemble with La Guardia, Name Brand, Etagweyo Vincent Onokurte, Shri and Carlos Pintado 10:00 p.m. The South Beach Chamber Ensemble, best known for presenting “beautiful music in beautiful spaces,” enters a new kind of space with Hip Hop artist La Guardia, drum machines by Name Brand, African drummer/dancer Etagweyo Vincent Onokurte and Indian percussionist Shri. Unique, fantastic instruments include the Earth Harp, whose strings will cross Ocean Drive to the very top of the Park Central Hotel. Youngarts.org The Dream Engine “Heliosphere” Two shows: 7:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. Spiraling and spinning and seemingly weightless, an acrobat suspended beneath a giant color-changing helium balloon explores the uncharted space between the beach and the sky. thedreamengine.co.uk Edouard Duval Carrie’s “Under the Congo Moon” moving sculptures and Ra Ra Parade Midnight – 3:00 a.m. Local Haitian artist, Edouard Duval Carrié also promises to create quite a show with the performance he is calling “Under the Congo Moon.” Duval Carrié explores the theme of migration in his artwork; for Sleepless Night, he will create several large sculptures of voodoo gods and have them “migrate” down the streets of Miami Beach in an exciting parade with music from a live band. The parade ends on Ocean Drive, where Duval Carrié, the band, and the voodoo gods stop to interact with people on the street. Sleepless Night is a sundown-to-sunrise, free arts celebration. It is produced by the City of Miami Beach Department of Tourism and Cultural Development and Cultural Arts Council in collaboration with every cultural organization in the city, together with private businesses and individuals. It offers free museum admissions, indoor and outdoor art installations and performances, architectural tours, dance (and dancing,) theater, music, film, slam poetry, fashion shows, acrobatics, comedy and other cultural offerings, all presented without admission charge at over 80 different venues spread throughout the city and the 13-hour night. Free shuttle buses with onboard arts programming connect the various zones of activity and remote parking for the duration of the event.
