POWERR OF THE PAU USE A work o of art, way beefore it becom mes a masterrpiece, must sstart with a p plain white canvass. Hidden, and yet unborn, inside it lie th he ponderinggs, the passio ons and the promise of hope and beauty. The artist’s creativity would b be severely crrippled, everyy time he picked up hiss brush, if thee solitude of w white on the canvass did n not lure him tto conceive e and co‐create a brand neew reality. Just like masterpieces require the emptiness of a canvass to creativeely explode upon; our con nversations allso need momenttary silences, pauses, to exxpress and hiighlight the m magic and mo otivation whicch lie hiddeen in our hearrts and mindss. Job applicants, job intterviewees, ssalespeople, managers and even senio or executives across in ndustries fall into this trap p of speaking up without thinking in. W We forget to recognize and give way to the feelings within. TThis constantt shooting‐fro om‐the‐hip‐ ness add ds nothing bu ut more noisee to the din an nd the mindleessness that engulfs our world. Th his aimless an nd excessive thoughtless vverbosity is aa waste of am mmunition and a massive w waste of human e energy. A pause,, before, during and even after converssations adds color, rhythm m and a pano oramic elegan nce to conversaations. A pau use, properly orchestrated d, is one of th he most poweerful dynamiccs of speech. It allows the speaker and the listener to assesss thoughts, structure ideass and tap into o the deeper recesses of o our wisdom and instiinct. In the language of Neeuro‐Linguistic Programming, a pause allows us to aalign our inteernal resourcees of intellect, emotion and authentic sself with our external reso ources of the body, speech h and action. In conversations, befo ore interactio ons, we can cchose to stop p, to slow dow wn and be still for a few seeconds. This will allow w us to put a leash on the chain‐reactio on of reactivee behaviour. This can lesssen our spinn ning off in thee usual waay of defend, offend, talk u up, talk down n and constan ntly justify ou ur past perforrmances. A p pause is power and a pause in nduces empowerment and d trust, as it m makes the other person feeel listened to o. This little pause th hen becomes a source of p powerful hum man energy. The way to increase tthe amount o of pausing before, during aand after all o our interactio ons is to keep p a mindful awareneess on our breeathing. Everry now then the din and th he clamour off the world th hat surrounds us tends to take oveer and engulf us in its toxiccity but an aw wareness on o our breath accts as an ancchor and help ps us manage emotion ns. A visible sign, and consstant life‐saveer of emotion nal intelligencce is a smootth, deep and a rhythmic flow of b breath. In many of my workshops, I professs the 3P metthod of poweerful connecttion, engagem ment and influence. In physically stable, at ease aand have good visibility any interraction plant yourself in aa position wheere you are p and expo osure. After p planting, pause deeply to gather your tthoughts and d visualize em mpowerment of the listenerss and a successsful outcome of the convversation. Finally, project yyourself with h power and cconfidence keeping the goals of tthe interactio on authentic, integral and driven by pu urpose. This w will align yourr internal and exteernal resourcees and also evvoke excellen nce from others. That, in eessence, is leadership and d coaching for excelllence in actio on. Pausing consciously iss a momentaary respite beetween beingg completely sself‐absorbed d to being aw wake and present ffor others an nd for life. Our conversatio ons need thesse momentarry silences an nd pauses, to express and high‐ligh ht the magic aand motivatio on which lie h hidden in ourr hearts and m minds.
