THINK OF PROBLEMS AS OPPORTUNITIES:

Captain Russell’s challenge to Bhuvan to play the cricket match was taken up by Bhuvan as an opportunity to bring happiness into the lives of his village folk.

DREAM BIG AND DEFINE THE GOAL: Bhuvan accepting the challenge to play the cricket match, as winning it meant 3 yrs of ‘TAXFREE’ happiness. But he did not just dream ‘BIG’, he also chalked out a strategic plan of action to win the match. He then put it before eyes of those, whose involvement was of importance in the match.

PUT COMMUNITY BEFORE SELF:

Bhuvan did not dream for himself, he dreamt for the good of his village folk. Not once did this man of character put his self-interest before that of others. It was this that made him win the support of his villagers… after some initial resistance.

BE DETERMINED IN FACE OF OPPOSITION: Right from the start when the entire village opposes Bhuvan’s having taken up the challenge to the time when the rest of his team refuses to play because he wants to take in an untouchable in the team. We face this situation many times in our organisations. Many a time, we give up and accept what we feel is perhaps a lesser decision. It is at times like these that we need to speak up- as long as we know we are fighting for the right issue, and not against an individual. www.afterschoool.tk

GIVE EXAMPLES TO ENHANCE UNDERSTANDING: Bhuvan simplified the challenge of learning cricket by portraying it as something similar to gilli-danda. Analogies have that effect and can be powerful in helping tame the seemingly difficult. As managers and leaders, we too have this task of motivating the team members to take up challenges in the projects.

MAKE A BEGINNING:

Bhuvan did not wait to start. He did not see around. He made bat and a ball, got the kid interested and started.

Only when we close the door behind us, we will see the doors in front start opening.

SMALL VICTORIES ARE IMPORTANT AT THE START Bhuvan hitting the ball for the first time in full public view and inculcating a feeling of participation among them. When starting any project it is important to have small wins at the start to motivate the team.

BUILDING THE TEAM:

Building the team is like recruitment. One needs to select the right people and motivate them. He understands the pressures and the soft points of people, and uses this knowledge to make them part of his team. Each one of his team members is treated as special, as being different.

ALLOCATING ROLES: Bhuvan also assigns responsibilities to each of his people. Just getting the people in the team is not good enough. They have to be told what the goal is. A team consists of different individuals. The objective is to make them all work together like a fist, like a team.

SUPPORT THE TEAM MEMBERS: Bhuvan backs his team members to the hilt, even when they make mistakes.

It is indeed important in any team that the captain backs the right person, at the right time, for the right job.

Passion As The Differentiator: Bhuvan and his team members played for the hopes & aspirations of their villagers.

It was their passion that made all the difference.

As leaders we all have to be careful of what we say and do, for the slightest sign of weakness can get magnified within the team.

Lead From The Front: Never Give Up… that was Bhuvan’s winning mantra. This attitude of his also enabled him to give his best shot even at the last ball and thus win the match.

DEFINE THE ENEMY: To the British it was just a game but for Bhuvan it was fight against the British oppressors and a win against them would bring 3 years of ‘TAXFREE’ life for his village folk. For Bhuvan the enemy was defined as bad, oppressors and merciless British overlords. This clear definition helped him to fight towards a specific goal.

OVERCONFIDENCE DESTROYS:

Captain Russel and his team members thought that the match would be a cake walk for them because they were a lot of good experienced. But was here that they committed a mistake, they were overconfident and overlooked the ability of the enemy and this is what made them lose the match.

Anyone can take a lesson from here, to never OVERESTIMATE oneself and www.afterschoool.tk others. UNDERESTIMATE

TRAIN and PRACTICE:

There are no shortcuts for physical and mental fitness. Bhuvan and his team strongly believed it and never compromised on it.

There is only one mantra: To be well trained and have good enough practice…. which is

CELEBRATE SMALL WINS: Small celebrations help in motivating and encouraging the team. It also helps to lift the spirits of the team members. This well projected by Bhuvan’s team.

NEVER GIVE UP:

Even the last ball of the match was played with hope. 5 runs to win out of 1 ball, but Bhuvan played it great expectations as though it could win the match for the team and that is exactly what happened. He never gave up on his ability and this is what made him win the match. In sport, in life or in business always be alert and keep giving your best to situations, because you never know when opportunity strikes.

Faith In God: The mantra helped Bhuvan... and trust me… it always helps.

When everything else seems lost, God shows the way… ofcourse, as long as you are on the right side.

Make the best of Limited Resources: Bhuvan made the best out of his limited resources. The tools for the game were all made by the village folk and were made out of the best that they could lay their hands on.

As entrepreneurs we too must be innovative. The focus should be on getting the work done and not on the availability of resources.

Take the unexpected in your stride: One after the other all the good batsmen in Bhuvan’s team fell, but he did not lose heart, he played on his best shot and gave the team its victory. Similarly one should not look at defeats on the path as setbacks. One has to learn to take the unexpected in one’s stride and move on.

Its about Team Spirit: No matter how well Bhuvan played in the match, nothing would have been possible if all the team members did not put in their efforts

Its about People: The film ‘Lagaan’ is all about how ordinary people can do extraordinary deeds. Its about bringing out something from within us. Something which has been hidden and long forgotten. Good old lessons in teamwork from an age-old fable The Tortoise And The Hare

Once upon a time a tortoise and a hare had an argument about who was faster. That’s not true. The fastest runner is me! I’m the fastest runner.

They decided to settle the argument with a race. They agreed on a route and started off the race.

Fine!

Ok, let’s have a race.

The hare shot ahead and ran briskly for some time. Then seeing that he was far ahead of the tortoise, he thought he'd sit under a tree for some time and relax before continuing the race. Poor guy! Even if I take a nap, he could not catch up with me.

He sat under the tree and soon fell asleep.

The tortoise plodding on overtook him and soon finished the race, emerging as the undisputed champ.

The hare woke up and realized that he'd lost the race.

The moral of the story is that slow and steady wins the race. This is the version of the story that we've all grown up with.

The hare was disappointed at losing the race and he did some soul-searching. He realized that he'd lost the race only because he had been overconfident, careless and lax. If he had not taken things for granted, there's no way the tortoise could have beaten him. www.afterschoool.tk

Why did I lose the race?

So he challenged the tortoise to another race. The tortoise agreed.

This time, the hare went all out and ran without stopping from start to finish. He won by several miles.

The moral of the story? Fast and consistent will always beat the slow and steady. If you have two people in your organization, one slow, methodical and reliable, and the other fast and still reliable at what he does, the fast and reliable chap will consistently climb the organizational ladder faster than the slow, methodical chap. It's good to be slow and steady; but it's better to be fast and reliable. www.afterschoool.tk

The tortoise did some thinking this time, and realized that there's no way he can beat the hare in a race the way it was currently formatted.

How can I can win the hare?

He thought for a while, and then challenged the hare to another race, but on a slightly different route. The hare agreed.

Can we have another race? This time we’ll go through a different route.

They started off. In keeping with his self-made commitment to be consistently fast, the hare took off and ran at top speed until he came to a broad river. The finishing line was a couple of kilometers on the other side of the river.

Goal

The hare sat there wondering what to do. In the meantime the tortoise trundled along, got into the river, swam to the opposite bank, continued walking and finished the race. What should I do?

The moral of the story? First identify your core competency and then change the playing field to suit your core competency. In an organization, if you are a good speaker, make sure you create opportunities to give presentations that enable the senior management to notice you. If your strength is analysis, make sure you do some sort of research, make a report and send it upstairs. Working to your strengths will not only get you noticed, but will also create opportunitieswww.afterschoool.tk for growth and advancement.

The hare and the tortoise, by this time, had become pretty good friends and they did some thinking together. Both realized that the last race could have been run much better.

So they decided to do the last race again, but to run as a team this time.

Great! I think we could do it much better, if we two help each other.

They started off, and this time the hare carried the tortoise till the riverbank.

There, the tortoise took over and swam across with the hare on his back.

On the opposite bank, the hare again carried the tortoise and they reached the finishing line together. They both felt a greater sense of satisfaction than they'd felt earlier.

The moral of the story? It's good to be individually brilliant and to have strong core competencies; but unless you're able to work in a team and harness each other's core competencies, you'll always perform below par because there will always be situations at which you'll do poorly and someone else does well. Teamwork is mainly about situational leadership, letting the person with the relevant core competency for a situation take leadership. www.afterschoool.tk

There are more lessons to be learnt from this story. Note that neither the hare nor the tortoise gave up after failures. The hare decided to work harder and put in more effort after his failure. The tortoise changed his strategy because he was already working as hard as he could. In life, when faced with failure, sometimes it is appropriate to work harder and put in more effort. Sometimes it is appropriate to change strategy and try something different. And sometimes it is appropriate to do both. The hare and the tortoise also learnt another vital lesson. When we stop competing against a rival and instead start competing against the situation, we perform far better. www.afterschoool.tk

His executives were Pepsi-focused and intent on increasing market share 0.1 per cent a time. Roberto decided to stop competing against Pepsi and instead compete against the situation of 0.1 per cent growth.

He asked his executives what was the average fluid intake of an American per day? The answer was 14 ounces. What was Coke's share of that? Two ounces. The public should reach for a Coke whenever they felt like drinking something. To this end, Coke put up vending machines at every street corner. Sharpen the Saw. Effective people are involved in self-renewal and self-improvement in the physical, mental, spiritual, and socialemotional areas, which enhance all areas off their life and nurture the other six habits.

Wear Out the Saw. Ineffective people fall back, lose their interest, and get disordered. They lack a program of self-renewal and selfimprovement and eventually lose the cutting edge they once had.

SEVEN PRINCIPLES UPON WHICH THE SEVEN HABITS ARE BASED The Seven Habits center on timeless and universal principles of personal, interpersonal, managerial, and organizational effectiveness. Listed below are the seven principles upon which the Seven Habits are based-principles which are in our circle of www.afterschoool.tk influence.

SEVEN PRINCIPLES UPON WHICH THE SEVEN HABITS ARE BASED 1. The principle of continuous learning, of selfreeducation - the discipline that drives us toward the values we believe in. Such constant learning is required in today’s world, in light of the fact that many of us can expect to work in up to five radically different fields before we retire. 2. The principle of service, of giving oneself to others, of helping to facilitate other people’s work. www.afterschoool.tk

SEVEN PRINCIPLES UPON WHICH THE SEVEN HABITS ARE BASED 3. The principle of staying positive and optimistic, radiating positive energy - including avoiding the four emotional cancers (criticising complaining, comparing, and competing).

4. The principle of affirmation of others treating people as proactive individuals who have great potential. 5. The principle of balance - the ability to identify our various roles and to spend appropriate amounts of time in, and focus on, all the impor- tant roles and dimensions of our life. Self-Awareness We begin to become self-aware and explore the programs we are living out. We come to realize that we stand apart from our pro-gramming and can even examine it. We also realize that between stimulus and response, we have the freedom to choose. This self-awareness then leads to the ability to look at other unique endowments in our secret life. www.afterschoool.tk

Conscience Our conscience is our internal sense of right and wrong, our “moral nature.” It is the “greater harmonizer” and “balance wheel” of all the principles that govern our behaviour. Our conscience gives us a sense of the degree to which our thoughts and actions are in harmony with our principles.

Power of Imagination We can visit the power of the mind to create or to imagine that which does not exist now. In that imagination lie our faith and our hope for the future. We look at what is possible, what we can envision.

Willpower or Independent Will Willpower refers to our determination, our resoluteness - our ability to act based solely on our selfawareness. BASIC CHARACTERISTICS OF GOOD MISSION STATEMENTS Developing a mission statement is foundational to Habit 2, Begin with the End in Mind. It sets general guidelines for our life based on our values and our roles and goals. There are four basic characteristics of good mission statements, whether they be personal, family, or organizational mission statements. www.afterschoool.tk

BASIC CHARACTERISTICS OF GOOD MISSION STATEMENTS 1. A mission statement should be timeless and changeless. Because goals are not timeless, they should not be included. Mission statements should be based upon unchanging core principles that operate regardless of present realities or situations. This changeless core will enable us to live with changes inside other people and inside the environment. Means have to do with how we go about achieving those ends. Principles are what we implements to achieve those ends. Ends and means are inseparable. To love and to be loved (our cultural and social ends) c. To learn (our needs to grow, develop, be recognized, and be useful) d. BASIC CHARACTERISTICS OF GOOD MISSION STATEMENTS 4. A mission statement should deal with all the significant roles of our life, such as a parent, teacher, manager, neighbour, and so forth. “Internalizing” our mission statement will also help us get a clear understanding of what is truly important. Goethe once said, “Things which matter most must never be at the mercy of things which matter least.” This means that we learn how to say no at appropriate times. Every time we say yes to something that is of little or no importance, we are saying no to something that is more important. Four candles slowly burned. www.afterschoool.tk

The ambiance was so soft, one could almost hear them talking… www.afterschoool.tk

The first candle said:

“I am Peace!”

“The world is full of anger and fighting. Nobody can keep me lit.”

Then the flame of Peace went out completely. www.afterschoool.tk

The second candle said:

“I am Faith!”

“I am no longer indispensable. It doesn’t make sense that I stay lit another moment.”

Just then a breeze softly blew Faith’s flame. www.afterschoool.tk

Sadly the third candle began to speak: “People “Idon’t am understand Love!” my importance so they simply put me aside. They even forget to love those who are nearest to them.”

And waiting no longer Love’s flame went out. www.afterschoool.tk

the room and saw the three unlit candles. “Why aren’t you burning? You’re supposed to stay lit till the end.”

Then the fourth candle answered:

“Don’t be afraid,

I am Hope!” “While I am still burning we can re-light the other candles.” www.afterschoool.tk

With shining eyes the child took the candle of hope and lit the other candles.
