Latina Bailey COM 242 November 12, 2005 Specific Purpose: To persuade the audience that police should be held accountable for their actions when using deadly force. My thesis statement/preview: In the discussion of police should be held accountable for their actions, I will show that police officers are not being held accountable for their actions and getting away with murder. I. Introduction A. Have you ever been pulled over or stopped by the police? Do you know the proper protocol or procedure when dealing with police officers? B. Which leads me to my topic that police should be held accountable for their actions when using deadly force. C. I am a Sociology-Criminology major and I love learning about anything that has to do with corrections and the justice system. Also, I have taken several classes with Dr. Chriss, including the US criminal justice system. He has written several books, used as an expert testimony in cases, and interviewed several times by reporters from the Cleveland Plain Dealer. D. Today I would like to show you that police officers are not being held accountable for their actions and getting away with murder. Body II. Police officers are using deadly force when they do not have to because they know it will be justified A. Police are supposed to follow protocol when interacting with people, such as drop the weapon.
B. Police have a script that they can follow when a shooting occurred. III. The problem can be solved with better police training, better media display on police shootings, and people attitudes towards police shootings. A. Police officers should get better training on using deadly force. B. The media should not influence the attitudes of the public that what the police did should be tolerated. C. People should not always believe that the actions of the police are always valid. IV. Conclusion A. Overall police officers need to be held accountable for their actions B. No, matter what gender or race, police can kill someone and have the murder be justified.
