Major Activities RELIEF TO THE HOMELESS Even the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) admits that at least 1 per cent of the city’s population in Delhi is homeless. This means that no fewer than 140,000 people live on the streets of Delhi. This figure does not include those who sleep in carts or rickshaws or under flimsy plastic-sheet roofs. This year, about 70 deaths were attributed to severe winter cold, a marked improvement over previous years. Though the ultimate goal of the National Policy on Housing and Habitat, 1998, to provide the basic need of shelter for all, but until such objective is achieved, it is necessary to provide some kind of shelter to the absolutely shelter less urban poor, particularly street children, destitute women and migrant laborers, etc. The Society undertook drives to feed hungry street children and elderly persons, and distribute blankets to the homeless. Society office bearers Mr. Sobhan Sinha, Mr. Murali Srinivas and Mr. Manab Chakraborty took active part in distributing food and blankets to the poor in the slums of Gurgaon.

DAIRY & ANIMAL HUSBANDRY EDUCATION The Society has been working with 4 Gram Panchayats in Dehradun District of Uttarakhand. Our members have provided advice to the villagers on better animal husbandry, improving livestock breed and health. Mr. Anil Tyagi of the Society has observed that the villagers are selling their milk through middlemen. The middlemen collect pure milk at cheap rates (Rs. 910/litre) and sell it at much higher prices (Rs. 18-22/litre). Meetings were organized on 9 November 2008 and 18 January 2009 to discuss with the villagers on how to provide better price of milk to the producer, and ensure quality milk and milk products to consumers.

Major Activities PnP UNITUS ULTRA POOR PROJECT The lives of ultra poor are characterized by irregular income, persistent hunger, poor health, and illiteracy. The ultra poor lack the ability and confidence to join mainstream microfinance, and require economic, health and social development inputs to create sustainable change in their lives.

The PnP Unitus Ultra Poor Project is aimed at providing marginal workers, particularly those in building & construction work basic health services, job placement and registration in government run social assistance programmes. We aim to graduate 1000 poor persons into non poor status within one year. This project is grant funded by Unitus Inc. USA.

Families living in the slums are primarily part of the unorganized sector (labor, lime kilns, recycling, vending on carts).Major pharmaceuticals, auto components, food processing, herbs, aromatic and real estate companies have established their presence in these two cities which has boosted demand for skilled workforce.

Dehradun and Haridwar provides being environment for up scaling employment of ultra poor. As there are no agency providing support to ultra poor in transforming the lives of ultra poor in these cities, PnP Unitus Ultra Poor Program is in a unique position to fill this void.
