Teens Make a Difference
Social problems among teenagers are very common nowadays. Teenagers are capable of going completely haywire at times causing much suffering among parents and teachers. The idea of the Managing Director of Hospital Segamat to organize the ‘Rakan Remaja Hospital’ programme must be a God-sent brainwave.
Perhaps not many would have heard of this programme which currently has been only established in two hospitals in the Johor state. This programme was carried out among the Form Two students in the Segamat district and held at the hospital itself during the school holidays. It was more like an outing with good accommodation and really superb food. They also visited an old folks’ home and enjoyed the joy of bringing happiness to the old folks. At the end of the programme, the participants knew how to perform CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and take care of bedridden patients. Perhaps the most enjoyable lesson that I had was the cooking.
The programme is a good one to bring out more positive attitudes in teenagers. The benefits of the ‘Rakan Remaja Hospital’ do not stop here. The programme will go on for another six months. It will be held on two Saturdays in a month.

The Lake Isle of Innisfree I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree, And a small cabin build there, of clay and wattles made. Nine bean-rows will I have there, a hive for the honeybee And live alone in the bee-loud glade. And I shall have some peace there, for peace comes dropping slow. Dropping from the veils of the morning to where the crickets sings; There midnight’s all a glimmer, and noon a purple glow And evening full of the linnet’s wings. I will arise and go now, for always night and day I hear lake water lapping with low sounds by the shore While I stand on the roadway, or on the pavement grey, I hear it in the deep heart’s core.

The next morning, Galau called a meeting of the village men. He noticed that some of them were missing. Their houses were empty. They had left the village, taking their families with them. Umat’s wife and children were also gone. Nobody said much. They agreed to build a strong, new house for everybody. The men went to the jungle and started to cut tall trees. They made a longhouse that was far off the ground. The walls were very strong. The ladders could be pulled up. There were holes near the hardwood pillars, covered with trap-doors. All the windows had thick shutters. Every family got one room in the new house. The children played in the long verandah. At night, when the ladders were pulled up and the shutters closed, the house was as safe as a big ship. Every evening after the farm work was done, Galau ordered the men to practice fighting.
