PLACE Design Group is an international planning, design and environment consultancy, with offices in major international markets including Australia, Asia, the Middle East and the Pacific. Established in 2001 by a small group of leading Australian planning, design and environment professionals, PLACE began with a deliberate strategy to create an integrated multidisciplinary practice that could provide either single or multiple services. › Beijing Olympic Green, CHINA Following an extensive submission process, PLACE was one of only two Australian Master planning consultancies invited to prepare an overall masterplan for the Beijing Olympics 2008. Drawing on the skills of our planners, landscape architects, attractions & sports and recreation designers, PLACE prepared a comprehensive package of master planning documents, perspectives and constructed a scale model of the design.

› Wuxi Swan Lake Master Plan, Jiangshu CHINA PLACE was invited by the Government to participate in an international master planning competition for the redevelopment of a 110 hectare site on the shores of the “Swan Lake”. PLACE provided visioning, master planning and design services for the development and redevelopment of the site. The unique setting on the 533 hectare Swan Lake, its tourism reputation and strong population growth, provided the project with great potential for further development.

› Wuhu City East Commercial Centre, Wuhu CHINA PLACE was invited by Architectus to assist them with the master planning of the expansion of the city centre. An additional 42km² was master planned to accommodate an increased population and provide appropriate commercial, cultural and recreational facilities. PLACE provided expertise to guide the design and integration of the land uses, activity centres, open spaces and networks of movement.

› Denarau Island Golf Course Development Master Planning, FIJI Following on from Landscape Architectural services on the Radisson Fiji for Tabua Investments, PLACE prepared a development masterplan for the existing Denarau golf course. The golf routing was remodelled, an additional 9 holes incorporated, and development parcels identified. Detailed design was then carried out on each parcel creating sites for residential development, a sports stadium and a convention centre.

› Thornlands Master planned Community, Brisbane AUSTRALIA PLACE Design Group advised on the ecological values of the Thornlands Investigation Area, a potentially suitable urban release parcel identified by the Regional Plan and assisted with a submission seeking its inclusion in the Urban Footprint. PLACE further advised on the suitability of the proposed Masterplan to identify other environmental management requirements with the end result being an environmentally acceptable development plan.

› Infrastructure Projects, Brisbane AUSTRALIA PLACE contributed to significant infrastructure works in Queensland with its in house Urban Design and Visualizations skills. PLACE‘s role consisted in providing specialist input to the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for Airport Link , the Concept Design Impact Management Plan (CDIMP) for stage 2 of the Northern Busway, the Springfield Multimodal Corridor Study within others. PLACE provided high quality visualization interfaces to these projects, proven very useful tools for marketing and consultation.

› Queanbeyan CBD Master Plan, Queanbeyan AUSTRALIA PLACE was invited to produce a Masterplan for the Queanbeyan CBD. The Council required an inspiring document capable to guide the future of its city centre, recognising its regional centre character for the short and medium term. PLACE worked with Queanbeyan Council and stakeholders delivering a considered, feasible and practical Masterplan which will inform development. The Masterplan articulated diverse disciplines such as Urban Design, Landscape Architecture, Town Planning, Engineering, Economics and Place-making.

› Lauderdale Quay, Tasmania AUSTRALIA PLACE was selected to Master Plan this new water front community. The role as a design leader included the delivery of Urban Design, Landscape Architecture and Visual Assessment services. The key design issue revolved around creating a contemporary waterfront experience that reflected the rich history of Tasmanian maritime activity. The low rainfall of the site provided key challenges which were overcome with multidisciplinary coordination. PLACE delivered a fully animated visualization package to assist community consultation.

› Radisson Resort, Denarau Island FIJI PLACE prepared a Landscape Concept for this 5 star resort project in 2002 for Tabua Investments the developer of Denarau Island in Fiji. The design incorporated an extensive lagoon area with 5 metre waterfall, a health spa island, adults only beach pool, dedicated wading and children’s swimming areas, a dark waterslide through an artificial mountain, and a large beach pool for general use complete with shade structures that complimented the adjacent restaurant form.

› Palazzo Versace Resort, Dubai UAE Palazzo Versace consists of luxury condominiums and hotel suites. The hotel sits amidst a number of large formal and informal lagoon pools and majestic formal gardens. The PLACE design incorporated shaded private spaces for relaxation and reflection, with views over Dubai Creek and Business Bay. The design incorporated three large temperature controlled pools on the ground floor, private plunge pools for the condominiums and penthouses, and a Health Spa lap pool.

› Port of Airlie, Airlie Beach AUSTRALIA Port of Airlie is located at Airlie Beach Queensland, gateway to the Whitsunday Islands. This extensive development covers over 24 hectares and includes a variety of challenging landscapes. Included are two resort hotels with pools and gardens on podium, a marina promenade, beachfront walkways, numerous apartment complexes, a commercial plaza, an exclusive house enclave, numerous streetscapes and public parklands. All of the public spaces have been designed to reflect the tropical landscape character of Airlie Beach.

› Pacific Harbour Water and Golf Community, Bribie Island AUSTRALIA PLACE were retained by QM Properties to prepare master plans for both the waterfront and golf communities of Pacific Harbour. PLACE’s work has since included urban design, ecological assessment, planning approvals for key areas, and landscape architecture for all residential precincts, marina village, wader bird roost, golf course, clubhouse and public parklands. Site planning of the marina village and golf clubhouse precincts was also undertaken to prove up master planning and for architectural briefing.

› Shanghai Greentown, Shanghai CHINA Shanghai Greentown is a large residential tower massing of more than 31 apartment towers meandering between lush tropical landscaping and large green community areas. PLACE was commissioned to design and document all internal and external landscape precincts. The main challenge of the landscape design for this project was to incorporate different elements into a cohesive landscape that provided choices for the residents, from active sporting activities to passive, relaxing and contemplative spaces.

› Aquitainia - the World, Dubai UAE Combining the islands of ‘France’ and ‘Spain’ on The World, Aquitainia is a private island paradise and incomparable destination. Located four kilometres off the Dubai coastline, at the centre of The World project, Aquitainia sits amidst the crystal blue waters of the Gulf. PLACE was contracted to carry out the full design, documentation and construction supervision of all external elements on the islands, inclusive of the landscape, beaches, pools both private and common, water features and recreational facilities.

› Twin Creeks Golf Community, Sydney AUSTRALIA Twin Creeks is a 400 hectare master planned rural residential golf community, comprising 177 acreage lots, an 18 hole Graham Marsh designed championship golf course, clubhouse, resort and conference facilities, and a ‘Peppers’ boutique hotel. The overall objective of PLACE’s landscape architectural services to the project was to reinforce the rural theme through well considered design principals to ensure the evolution of an ecologically sustainable community with minimal impact on the surrounding natural environment.

› The Strand, Townsville AUSTRALIA PLACE (WSA) was commissioned by Townsville City Council to take the lead master planning role for The Strand, Townsville’s award winning foreshore redevelopment. The design involved developing beachfront parkland supported by public infrastructure elements that has resulted in overwhelming ongoing public support for the 2.1 kilometre linear parkland. Design objectives were to provide a vibrant and colourful beachfront that provides a relaxing environment for the parkland users.

› Sheraton Resort, Dameisha CHINA This 400-bed 5-star resort hotel and villas is located on 6.0ha of absolute beachfront on the southern coast of Shenzhen City. PLACE work-shopped landscape forms and resort component theming based on ‘Patterns in Nature’ – the flow of landscape form responding to the perceived energy in the building. The resulting design features; sculptured landforms, flowing paths with bold stripes, lanterns, fountains and arbours that explore unfolding monstera leaves while complimenting the architectural curves of the building.

› Radius Industrial Estate, Brisbane AUSTRALIA Radius Industrial City is a 50-hectare master planned industrial development at Larapinta, a rapidly developing industrial growth zone in Brisbane. PLACE was engaged to coordinate the complex ecological studies and approvals required to establish an acceptable development footprint, and to coordinate management programs for the conservation and enhancement areas intended to offset development impacts. The ability of PLACE to negotiate complex environmental approvals has seen Radius developed as envisaged by the developer.
