Music Therapy experiences involve children in singing, listening, moving, playing instruments, and creative activities creating a familiar musical environment that encourages positive interpersonal interaction and allows clients freedom to explore and express themselves. 1

Making a difference Music therapy can be effective in addressing developmental needs in the following ways:
• Rhythm and music may be used to support develop-
ment in many areas, including: communication skills, attention and interaction, and movement/motor skills.
• Music provides concrete multi-sensory stimulation, through auditory, visual, tactile and proprioceptive senses. The rhythmic component of music is very organizing for the sensory systems and supports emotional and behavioral regulation.

• Enhancing parent-child interactions is an integral aspect of music therapy sessions. Music may be a comfortable and very effective medium to support the parent-child relationship.
• Music captures and helps maintain attention. It is highly motivating and can support sustained engagement and a flow of back-and-forth interactions.
• Music therapy can enable those without language to communicate, participate, and express themselves nonverbally, through sounds, gestures, eye gaze and signs. Very often music therapy also assists in the development of verbal communication, speech, and language skills.

The recent cuts in the budget have eliminated all music therapy services funded through the state Regional Centers. This cut effects many deserving individuals with special needs across the state, including children at Pasadena Child Development Associates, Inc. (PCDA). The Music Therapy program at PCDA has been active in providing services to children with special needs in the Los Angeles community for over 12 years
Please help PCDA reach our goal of raising $50,000 for music therapy clients. Every $500 in donations give a child and family the opportunity to continue weekly Music Therapy for six months. Music is a powerful way to motivate children to connect socially, express their creativity, and explore strong emotions. Families share wonderful moments while creating improvisational music with their children. Board qualified music therapists can use the power of rhythm, sound, and movement to support children with developmental disabilities to achieve their developmental goals. Please help children with special needs continue to explore their creativity and expand social-emotional connections through the beauty of music. Donations of any amount are gladly accepted at www.pasadenachilddevelopment.org as well as on the day of the event.
