Applying for a provisional driving licence So you’ve reached the landmark age of 17 years and your ready to drive or maybe you simply want to have greater independence. It’s time for action and before you can start to learn to drive you will need to apply for your provisional licence. Apply on line: You can apply for your first provisional driving licence for a car using the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency’s (DVLA) secure and easy to use online service. www.dvla.gov.uk and follow the links. Apply in person or by post: You can apply for your provisional driving licence by completing the D1 application form that is available from the DVLA form ordering service or Post Office branches. You will also need to enclose original documentation confirming your identity, a passport style colour photograph and the fee of £50.00. Send your completed application and payment to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1AD or you may be able to use the premium checking service. When to expect your licence: DVLA aims to deliver your licence to you within three weeks of receiving your application. It will take longer if your health or personal details have to be checked. When your licence is issued it will now have a number of added security features. One of the main differences being a laser engraved black and white photograph. You will need to wait for your licence to arrive before driving lessons can start. Please allow at least three weeks before contacting DVLA.

How to best choose a driving instructor: Well you’ve made a great start due to the fact that you’ve chosen me Russ Simmons DSA ADI and my driving school Pass ‘R’ uss. On a more serious note if you are paying for someone to teach you to drive, they must be approved and registered with the Driving Standards Agency (DSA). Only a registered approved driving instructor (ADI) can charge money for teaching you to drive. DSA is responsible for maintaining and checking the standards of all approved driving instructors (ADI), who to qualify must: • • • • •

Have held a full driving licence for at least four years. Pass a much tougher theory test than the learner drivers take. Reach and maintain a high level of instruction. The standard of tuition is regularly checked by a supervising examiner from the DSA. Be registered with the DSA. Display an ADI identification certificate on the windscreen of the tuition vehicle.

You should take advice from your ADI on: • • • •

All aspects of driving. What books to read? When to take your test. How to practice

Those who pass their driving test have had on average about 45 hours of professional training combined with 22 hours of private practice (DSA data). Learners who prepare this way with a combination of plenty of professional training and plenty of private practice do much better in the test. You and your instructor are a team and by working together and communicating clearly will achieve your ultimate target of passing your driving test and driving well for life.

Important Note: 1) All lessons to be paid for in advance 2) Any cancellation made within 48 hours of the lesson due will require payment in full

3

The learning process begins So you’ve got your provisional licence and chosen your ADI, now the real work can begin, teaching you to drive safely for life. The controls: This will be your first lesson (normally free) and as such you will need to understand how to set the car up for your best driving position. We use a system called “DSSSM”: D – Doors S – Seat S - Steering S - Seatbelt M – Mirrors This will then be known more commonly as your “Cockpit Drill” Together we will make steady progress through the training syllabus to ensure that all learning is at a pace which best suits your individual abilities, as human beings we are all unique and therefore learn at differing paces and styles.

Some very important terminology: MSM – Mirror/s Signal Manouvre – This is a crucial part of your formulative driver training and will form a constant thread through all of your training and driving experiences, do this well and you are well on your way to a sound understanding of the skills needed to be a safe driver for life! POM – Prepare Observe Move – This is the technique needed to ready your vehicle prior to moving away and will also put in place some very important base blocks for your foundation skills as a driver. Full sweep/6 point check – This is a crucial part of your observational skills needed prior to moving your vehicle away - Where should I look? • • • • • •

Left blind spot Left door mirror Ahead Rear view mirror Right door mirror Right blind spot – your now ready to move when safe!

MSPSL – Mirror/s Signal Position Speed Look – This is an extension to MSM and will greatly help with your control of the car at all junctions & roundabouts.

4

Preparing for your driving test – The driver’s record To help you learn in a structured way I have produced a driver’s record this will help us monitor your progress and provide you with a lasting record of your achievement. The driver’s record has a list of 24 key skills covered in the practical diving test. It has space for your instructor to fill in as you progress through the five levels shown on your record. Levels 1 to 4 should be initialled and dated by your instructor, and full details added when you reach level 5. From this, both you and your instructor will be able to see at a glance which skills need to be improved. You need to learn the skill and then practice to get the experience. You also need to learn the theory and practical driving skills at the same time, especially as the theory test now has a hazard perception part. The driver’s record should be taken to all lessons. What are the 5 levels? The meaning of each level is: • • • • •

The skill is introduced It can be carried out under full instruction It can be carried out correctly when prompted It seldom needs to be prompted You can carry it out consistently without any prompting

The driver’s record will help to remind you what you’re trying to achieve, how to get there and how far you’ve progressed.

5

Practising your driving skills: An important part of your structured learning plan is practicing what you have learned during your lesson. Get together with your instructor and maybe your parent or training partner and discuss what needs to be practised. You should vary what you do, try to practice: • • •

On as many road types as you can. In all sorts of weather and traffic conditions, even in the dark. On dual carriageways where the national speed limit applies – you may be asked to drive on this type of road during your test.

You should try to keep a record of any practice you have on different types of road and during different conditions between lessons. This will you to remember and quantify the amount of practice you have had in the different conditions. You should also record any worries you may have about your driving and then discuss these with your instructor. Those who pass their driving test have had on average about 45 hours of professional training combined with 22 hours of private practice (DSA data). Learners who prepare this way with a combination of plenty of professional training and plenty of private practice do much better in the test. When to take your practical test? You aren’t ready to take your test until you have a completed set of signatures in the level 5 boxes. Only then can your driving instructor sign you off as ready. By such time you should be able to drive safely without prompting from your instructor. You can practice for the multiple-choice part of the theory test at; www.theory-tests.co.uk All you need to do is register, which is simple and free. Registration will provide free access to two car or motorcycle theory tests. This should be done as soon as possible and in combination with your practical driving lessons.

Answer Applying the indicators or hazard warning switch and check functioning of all indicators (may need to switch ignition on). Operate brake pedal, make use of reflections in windows, garage doors etc or ask someone to help. Gentle pressure on the steering wheel, maintained while the engine is started, should result in a slight but noticeable movement as the system begins to operate. If steering becomes heavy the system may not be working properly. Apply footbrake firmly. Demonstrate by applying parking (handbrake) brake so that when it is fully applied it secures itself, and is not at the end of its working travel. Identify dipstick/oil level indicator, describe check of oil level against minimum/maximum markers. Identify high/low level markings on header tank where fitted or radiator filler cap, and describe how to top up to correct level. Identify reservoir, check level against high/low markings. Check is carried out by pressing horn symbol. Operate control to wash and wipe windscreen (turn on ignition if necessary).Show Set all relevant controls including: fan, temperature, air direction/source and heated screen to clear windscreen and windows (turn on ignition if necessary). Operate switch (turn on dipped headlights and ignition if necessary). Check warning light is on and explain use. Operate switch (with ignition or engine on if necessary) check for main beam warning light. Brakes should not feel spongy or slack. Brakes should be tested as you set off and vehicle should not pull to one side.

Identify where the windscreen washer reservoir is and tell me how you would check the windscreen washer level. Tell me where you would find the information for the recommended tyre pressures for this car and how tyre pressures should be checked.

Tell

Tell me how you make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides the best protection in the event of a crash.

Tell

Tell me how you would check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road. Tell me how you would check that the headlights and tail lights are working (no need to exit vehicle).

Tell

Tell

Tell me how you would know if there was a problem with the Anti lock braking system.

8

Identify reservoir and explain how to check level against minimum/maximum markers. Use manufacturers guide, use a reliable pressure gauge, check and adjust tyre pressure when tyres are cold, don’t forget to refit valve caps and remember the spare. The head restraint should be adjusted so the rigid part of the head restraint is at least as high as the eye or top of ears and as close to the back of the head as is comfortable.N.B. Some restraints may not be adjustable. No cuts or bulges, 1.6mm of tread depth across the centre ¾ of the breadth of the tyre and around the entire outer circumference. Operate relevant switch (turn on ignition if necessary) then walk around vehicle and check (tell me question no need to physically check the lights). Warning light should illuminate if there is a fault with the anti lock braking system.

Reporting for your practical test At the driving test centre You must bring the following items with you. If you do not, the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) may refuse to carry out the test and you may lose your fee. •

an appropriately insured and licensed vehicle, displaying L- Plates (except for taxi and Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) part 2 tests), that is suitable for the purpose of the test

the appropriate theory test pass certificate (or confirmation) if you are not exempt

your appointment letter

Both parts of your photo card license. If you do not take both parts of your license your test will not take place and you will lose your fee

if you have an old-style paper license, you must take your signed driver license and a valid passport - from 1 November 2005 no other form of photographic identification will be accepted

for a motorcycle test please remember to take your CBT certificate as well

If you misplace your license, you must apply for a replacement from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), which could take up to 15 days. If this happens, you may have to rearrange your test. Remember: •

no license

no photo

no test, and

You will lose your fee!

10

Claiming a driving test pass Once you have passed your driving test (both theory & practical) you’ll need to notify the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) to exchange your test pass certificate and provisional driving license for a new full driving license as soon as possible. On the day you pass your test your examiner will offer to arrange for your full license to be sent to you free of charge, this would be the preferred option. The same is also true if you're the holder of a full driving license and have passed a test for another vehicle, such as a lorry or bus. You'll need to return your test pass certificate with your driving license to have the new driving entitlement added to your license. Beware of the time limit! If you don't claim your test pass within two years of the date of your test, the driving entitlement, in which you gained the test pass, will be lost. You'll have to take and pass both parts of the driving test again for that category of vehicle if you wish to have it included on your driving license. Photo card Driving License

Apply by post To notify DVLA of your driving test pass you'll need to complete the declaration on your test pass certificate and send it, together with your photo card driving license, the D740 paper counterpart to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BJ. If your name has changed since your last license you'll also need to complete a D1 application form that is available from DVLA's form ordering service or Post Office® branches. You'll also need to provide original documentation confirming your new name. The same applies if you have a full driving license and have passed another test for a different vehicle.

The course aims to build upon your newly acquired driving skills and knowledge. What is Pass Plus?

Pass Plus is a training course specifically aimed at new drivers, designed by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) with the help of insurers and the driving instruction industry. driving in town

driving in all weathers

driving on rural roads

driving at night

driving on dual carriageways

Anyone who holds a full UK license is eligible to take part in the scheme. You will not have to take a test at the end of the course but you will be continually assessed. You must successfully complete all the modules in the course to an achieved or exceeded standard. How much does Pass Plus cost?

Fees for the Pass Plus course will vary depending on where you live and the instructor or driving school you choose. You should bear in mind that the course will take a minimum of six hours, if more sessions are needed for you to successfully complete the course, this may add to the cost. When you have successfully completed the course, you are advised to check available discounts offered by the insurance companies taking part in the scheme. The amount you save will depend on the company you choose, you may even save more than you paid for the course.
