PARTS OF A SENTENCE Every sentence has two necessary parts: SUBJECT & PREDICATE

SUBJECT:  Tells who or what the

sentence is about  Has to include a noun

Complete SUBJECT:  Includes the main noun

and all the words that describe or modify it

Simple SUBJECT:  The main noun or

pronoun that the sentence is about  MUST be part of the complete subject

Practice: Underline the Complete Subject  Her textbook fell off the shelf.  Plastic bottles pollute our

environment.

Practice: Now CIRCLE the SIMPLE Subject  Her textbook fell off the shelf.  Plastic bottles pollute our

environment.

ANSWERS:  Her textbook fell off the shelf.  Plastic bottles pollute our

PREDICATE  Tells the action or what is

happening  Has to include a verb

Complete PREDICATE  The action word (verb)

and all the words and phrases that describe or modify it

Simple PREDICATE  The main verb or action

in the sentence  MUST be part of the complete predicate
