From the ES Administration Dear Elementary School Parents, First of all I would like to update you on a staffing change that took place last week. Mary Cunning, our CMC librarian, will no longer be with us for personal reasons, and for the remainder of this school year the CMC will be under the direction of David Birchenall, our Director of Library Services, with the support of Jo Cayabyab, our CMC Instructional Assistant. Joining the CMC next school year as our Librarian is Rebecca Pierce, one of our current grade four teachers.

Next week we have a lot going on in the Elementary School. Our CMC Book Week will be taking place to provide our students opportunities to learn more about how books are created by meeting with different authors and taking part in storytelling sessions. Classes will each be assigned to different times throughout the week. Our Children’s Musical Theater directed by Linell will be presenting “The Nightingale” performed by students in grades four and five. They will be on stage in the Fine Arts Theatre for a student performance on Wednesday April 29 at 1:00 p.m., followed by an evening performance at 6:00 p.m. We look forward to watching our students sharing their singing and acting talents! It is at this time of the year that we start to receive a lot of questions about classes for the next school year. In Elementary School next year, we will be adding an additional class of grade 2 and grade 5 will become a part of Middle School. Therefore we will have the following classes: Pre School 4 classes ECLC 5 classes Grade 1 – 4 6 classes each Aside from the students going into their second year of Pre School, where we maintain the group and teachers as much as possible, mixing of classes is something that happens at every grade level. We have a relatively transient student population and we feel it gives us the opportunity to balance the classes for the start of the new year. It also helps the children expand their circle of friends and helps them to adapt to change. The sectioning process is very involved, one in which all the teachers spend considerable time on and give a lot of thought and consideration. The aim of the process is to create balanced groups in terms of gender, language proficiency, academic needs, emotional and social dynamics and a mix of ethnicities. Students receiving Learning Support and ESL are also distributed evenly across the classes. As much as possible, we also try to place each child with at least one other person he/she works well with. The teachers of the grade are responsible for establishing the classes their students are moving to. For example, (Continued on page 6)

From the PE Department know that exercise also provides opportunities for fun and to be with friends. It is terrific to see so many children wearing hats to PE lessons scheduled on the ES Field. As of April 27th Coach Pekin’s classes will be in the gymnastics area, Coach Bill’s classes will be swimming, Coach Noli will be on the Covered Court and Coach Perry’s classes will be in the ES Gym.
Thank you to all those parents who have sent in photos of children being active. They are now on display outside the Little Theatre. A recent article published in the School Health Alert Newsletter from Nashville Tennessee discusses a study that concluded that aerobic fitness has a significant relationship to cognitive function as measured by academic performance. Recommended activity guidelines for elementary aged children is a minimum of one hour per day. Good for your body and your brain it seems! Congratulations to all our 5th grade athletes that participated in the final Amazing PE Race for the year today! It is good to

From the Admission Office
From the Uniform Shop
Dear ISM Parents, Greetings from the Admission Office! The Re-Enrollment Requirements for School Year 2009-10 will be available for pickup in the Admission Office starting next week. All of the generic re-enrollment forms are ALSO available on the website if you wish to download and print the forms from there. The forms can be found under Admission and then under the Re-Enrollment & Withdrawal tab.
Hate to wait and be in a long line?!? Purchase your uniforms in advance for School Year 2009-2010… Just visit the ISM Uniform Shop at Room P069 (beside the Security Office) every Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:00a.m. to 4:00p.m. See you there!!!
The complete Re-Enrollment Packet will include the… 1. Re-Enrollment Clearance Form for SY2009-10 (2-pages) for each child in the family. 2. Health Clinic Clearance Procedure (1-page) letter 3. Health Clinic Updating Form (2-pages) for each child in the family 4. Tuberculosis Screening Form (2-pages) for students entering Grades 1, 5, or 9 5. Parent and School Shared Agreements (4-pages) form for each child in the family 6. OPTIONAL Board Proxy Form (1-page) for each family 7. OPTIONAL PTA Directory Form (1-page) for each family
URGENT…if you know that your child(ren) will not be returning to ISM for the 2009-10 school year, please inform the Admission Office as soon as possible if you have not already done so. We currently have very few families indicating that they will not be returning and consequently there are an ever growing number of applicants in a WAITPOOL for possible openings. This is causing great distress and anxiety in those families (and in the Admission Office). If you are sure that your child will be leaving ISM, please submit a Withdrawal Notification Form or contact and verify with the Admission Office (840-8488) that he/she is listed as not returning for SY200910. The Withdrawal Notification Form can be obtained from the Admission Office or from the ISM website under the Admission tab and then click on Re-Enrollment & Withdrawal. This will be a great help for our planning and to the many families waiting to be admitted to the school. Thank you. 2

From the Art Department Dear Parents, Just a reminder that we, in the Art Department, are still in recycling mode. We particularly require newspapers at the moment and lots of it. We are also currently in need of ribbons, string, bottle caps and tops, old tools and toys (even if it does not work), gift wrap, greeting cards, magazines, hardware (broken is fine), transparent plastic wrap etc . Frankly, there is not much we can’t find a use for. However please do not send juice or milk containers as they attract cockroaches even when washed. Thanks so much,
Olivia Jones ES Art

From the ES Administration (Continued from page 1)
Grade 3 teachers will organize the Grade 4 classes for next year. Once the grade level has made their final draft, the lists are then reviewed by myself, Counselors, Learning Support and ESL program leaders. At the end of the school year, you will receive a section card informing you of your child’s teacher for the next school year. It is not uncommon to receive special requests from parents. In order to minimize inequalities among sections, we do not accept special requests from parents for placement with a particular student, classmate or teacher. To do so we would have to honor 770 preferences and this would be impossible to do. Thank you to those of you who have returned your reenrolment forms for next school year. We have a number of families who have not notified us of their enrolment intentions at this time. We would like to encourage you to do so as soon as possible. We have a number of our grades and programs that currently have waiting lists for next school year. Have a great weekend, Yours in Education,
Simon Gillespie
