Practice paper 5B Writing Task 1

Dear Pat Hi! Thanks for your email. Are you looking forward to Sports Day? I’ve been thinking about which events you should participate in, and I have three suggestions for you. I don’t know if you’ll want to enter all three events, but since your teacher thinks you have good stamina, why not? All my suggestions are for individual events because your teacher says they suit you best. My first suggestion is to enter the discus throwing event because you have good balance and coordination. Your strong legs will also give you lots of power for the throw.

My second suggestion is the 400-metre hurdles. You’ll be good at this because you’re strong, well coordinated and a good runner.

My last suggestion is that you should participate in the 3,000-metre race. I think you’re suited to this event because you’re strong and have lots of stamina. Both traits are really important for such a long distance.

I hope my suggestions have helped you decide which events to enter in Sports Day. Please write back to tell me how you got on. Your friend Chris

Answer key Task 2 Question 1

Suggested model answer for Task 2 Question 1 (about 250 words) PROPOSAL FOR EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES AT THE SCHOOL SPORTS DAY 1

Introduction The Student Council was asked to propose events and activities for the school’s Sports Day. We would like to make the following suggestions.

2

Suggested events and activities The events and activities that we propose are parents versus teachers races, an entertainment tent and a closing ceremony. 2.1 Parents versus teachers races These could include egg-and-spoon races, sack races and three-legged races. 2.1.1 Reason This would be a funny way to involve both teachers and parents and amuse students and spectators. 2.1.2 Details The Student Council would organise the races and send invitation letters to parents. 2.2 Entertainment tent This would offer activities for the whole family, such as arts and crafts, mah-jong and a play area. Entertainers could also provide balloon-modelling, face-painting and children’s entertainment. 2.2.1 Reason This would ensure that the Sports Day offers something for everyone. 2.2.2 Details This could be arranged by the Parent-Teacher Association. The entertainers would be invited to attend and could charge a small fee for their services. 2.3 Closing ceremony This could start with a procession of students and teachers around the sports ground waving flags and carrying banners. Then, there could be a performance by the school’s Chinese Lion Dance troupe. To close, there could be a prize-giving ceremony and a short speech from the Principal. 2.3.1 Reason This would be an exciting way to finish and would encourage families to stay until the end. 2.3.2 Details This could be arranged by the PE Department, with the assistance of Sports Day volunteers.

Answer key Task 2 Question 2

Suggested model answer for Task 2 Question 2 (about 250 words) The laughing lifeguard

When I became a lifeguard, I thought my summer would be filled with boring days twirling my whistle. Looking back, I have never laughed so much as I did during those two months by the pool.

As a lifeguard, I was assigned to give swimming lessons for a week to a young girl named Grace. Grace looked like an angel with a silver bathing suit and cap. However, when her parents left, she ran into the toilet, locked the door and wouldn’t come out. This happened all week until our last lesson when she dived into the pool and swam two lengths — all by herself.

Another experience I’ll never forget happened one afternoon. The pool should have been closed since it was raining, but one man was swimming laps. Another lifeguard, Robbie, and I were soaking wet and miserable. Then, Robbie jumped out of his chair and started singing and dancing around the pool. The man immediately stopped swimming and left. Our manager laughed too and let us go home.

Last, I’ll always remember my final day. Somehow, two dogs got past the guard and ran into the pool area. The guard and I tried chasing them out, but the dogs jumped into the water. I had to jump in after them and carry them out while they were licking my face.

I never would have guessed that my first impression would be so wrong. Between swimming lessons, rainy days and stray animals, being a lifeguard was an experience I’ll never forget.
