Level 5: I can also • Find most of the controls on a basic orienteering course in a reasonably fast time, selecting the correct route. • Use pacing accurately to find controls. • Find a number of controls using orienteering techniques on a more demanding course. • Use a compass very accurately on a basic orienteering course. Level 6: I can also • Understand what the appropriate clothing is for more advanced orienteering courses and why. • Find all of the controls on a basic orienteering course in a fast time, selecting the correct routes. • Find the majority of orienteering controls using orienteering techniques on a more demanding course. • Understand when and how to use attack points and aiming off techniques. • Measure distances and use pacing to find controls. • Use fine orienteering techniques over short distances.

Level 9: I can also • Work as an individual on an advanced orienteering course finding all of the controls quite quickly. • Navigate through different types of terrain. • Use a compass and pacing at the correct time. • Use handrails, attack points and catching features with accuracy. • Complete rough orienteering over long legs. • Understand competitive techniques. • Understand the colour coding system of orienteering courses. Level 10: I can also • Work as an individual on an advanced orienteering course finding all of the controls very quickly. • Navigate well through a variety of different types of terrain. • Use handrails, attack points, compass bearings, pacing and catching features very accurately. • Employ competitive techniques in competition.
