ORAL ANATOMY LESSON 4 TEETH AND SUPPORTING STRUCTURES FUNCTIONS OF TEETH: • MASTICATION • SHAPING OF FACE • SPEECH • PROTECTIVE • PREHENSILE - ability to grab food by hands DENTAL CONSONANTS – F S & T ANATOMICAL FEATURES: ANATOMICAL CROWN – part of the tooth covered by enamel from cervix to the tip of the crown CLINICAL CROWN – part of the tooth that is visible in the mouth and exposed to the oral fluids PERIODONTIUM – histologic structure of the oral cavity ANATOMICAL ROOT – part of the tooth covered by cementum from the cervix to the apex of the root CLINICAL ROOT – part of the tooth still implanted and surrounded by periodontium CERVICAL LINE/CERVIX/NECK – line of separation between crown and root portion also known as CEMENTOENAMEL JUNCTION (CEJ) DENTAL TISSUES – histologic parts TOOTH TISSUE PROPER: • HARD DENTAL TISSUES – mineralized o ENAMEL – hard mineralized tissue that is said to be 9698% calcified and is the hardest tissue in the body. It is brittle, inelastic, translucent and it serves as a protective layer to the dentin o DENTIN – a hard tissue that forms the main bulk of the

tooth and surrounds the pulp cavity. It is said to be 60-70% calcified, gives the form and shape of the tooth, light yellowish in color and is said to be slightly elastic which makes it carry the stress of mastication o CEMENTUM – covers and protects the dentin of the roots of the tooth. Ii is 4555% calcified, light yellowish and dull in color and is usually responsible for the repair of tooth SOFT DENTAL TISSUES o PULP – the only soft dental tissue of the tooth found at the innermost portion of the tooth and is said to be the only part of the tooth that is alive o PULP TISSUE – pinkish in color, uncalcified and is made up of blood vessels, nerves and cellular substances

PARTS OF THE PULP: • CORONAL PULP – part of the pulp found at the coronal area • RADICULAR PULP – part of the pulp found at the root area FUNCTIONS OF PULP TISSUES: • NUTRITIVE • FORMATIVE • DEFENSIVE • PROTECTIVE • SENSORY TERTIARY DENTIN – stimulation of the pulp tissues to regenerate when you put calcium hydroxide (CaOH) on top of an exposed pulp PARTS OF PULP CAVITY: • PULP CHAMBER – an enlarged portion of the pulp cavity that lies in the ventral portion of the anatomical crown

PULP HORN – an elevation of pulp chamber on its elongated portion PULP CANAL/ROOT CANAL – part of the pulp cavity found on the root area that is large at the cervical part of the root and is constricted towards the apex of the root

APICAL FORAMEN – where blood and nerve supply enters and leaves the tooth
