Date of submission October 16, 2009

I tried to search for the answers of these questions through the databases of Buley Library. 1. Which FS Databases should you consult to find resources for a paper on Information Literacy and why? It will be the “library literature” , and “Article 1 st” Databases , they are both FS Databases, and the Library Literature Database is more specified in library and information science materials, but we could also find some papers in information literacy using “Article 1st” database, because it is multidisciplinary database for articles. Some of the results using Library Literature (FS) (Information Literacy Programs in the Digital Age).

2. If you had to do a literature review on Domestic Violence which FS databases will you search and why? I ‘ll use the Subject Specific Databases that related to that topic(Domestic Violence) which are specified in Humanities and social science or multidisciplinary databases, I could search in these two ( FS) databases which have access to literature reviews to that tpoic :

1- Article 1st (FS) Which indexes of articles from c.12,500 journals. One of the results on that topic: Implementation of Universal Screening for Domestic Violence in an Urgent Care Community Health Center Author: Thurston, Wilfreda; Tutty, Leslie; Eisener, Amanda, and others Source: Health Promotion Practice 10, no. 4 (2009): 517-526 Libraries Worldwide: 395

2- Wilson Select Plus (FS) Which has Full text articles in a variety of humanities and social sciences. And one of the results in that topic:

If we need abstracts of papers that published as dissertation we could search Dissertation Abstracts Online List of Records (FS) and this is one of the papers I retrieved in domestic violence :

3. What is a Bibliographic utility? What are other examples of Bibliographic utility? According to Cataloging Glossary (2) (2006) The bibliographic utility is an organization that provides access to and support for machine-readable bibliographic databases directly to member libraries or through a network of regional bibliographic service centers, usually via a proprietary interface. The largest bibliographic utility in the United States is OCLC. Other major bibliographic utilities as: Research Libraries Group (RLG) Western Library Network (WLN) have recently merged with OCLC. Outside of the U.S., The British Library National Bibliographic Services (NBS) is an example of a bibliographic utility. What is the difference between FirstSearch and Worldcat?

According to the Glossary (2000) (3) the First search is an interface that provides seamless electronic access to dozens of databases and more than 10 million full-text and full-image articles through a subscription to the service. Underlying FirstSearch is the WorldCat database, the most comprehensive and up-to-date bibliographic resource available. Users find relevant records quickly and the location of resources - in your collection or at other libraries - with the click of a button. Users can start and refine searches at one of three different skill levels. FirstSearch integrates into current library resources. So WorldCat database is one of the databases on the FirstSearch system which made up of over 35 million records of all types of materials (books, 2 Cataloging Glossary (2006) Retrieved on Oct 15th 2009 . journals, videos, cassette tapes, etc); the records represent the holdings of libraries throughout the world. The difference between them that WordCat has a v web searchable database that any user can search through it for ant of library holdings.

Search Question: A student came to the reference desk and said that his professor asked him to look up a journal it sounds like a British journal of clinical something and she thinks that the Health Sciences Library at University of Buffalo has it. Locate the journal and provide your search results. Which OCLC Database did you search? Why?

I will use WorldCat (FS) advanced search. This is one of OCLC databases that help us locate any materials through the holdings of libraries throughout the world. I searched for all these keywords that the student came up with (British journal of clinical) I limited to serial publication and I tried to look for the “ library in health science” to see where I could find the place belongs to I tried searching the web for this library but I couldn’t find any material through the wordCat using the code for University at Buffalo the only library code that comes with results on this subject is in library of (Suny at Buffalo) the code of this library (buf) I put that code in the particular place in WorldCat searching box It came up with these results: some of them as follows : I think one of the listed British journals in clinical (psychology, or pharmacology, or practice …) will be the one that student was looking for 1.

The British journal of clinical psychology. Publication: Letchworth [England] : British Psychological Society, 1981Document: English : Serial Publication : Periodical : Quarterly (every 3 months) Internet Resource Libraries Worldwide: 627

EBSCO reference questions:

1. I need some articles on Reference 2.0 published in the last two years.

I chose to search one of EBSCO database which is related to that topic “Reference 2.0” the best one is “ Library, Information Science & Technology Abstracts” , this database (LISTA) indexes more than 500 core journals, more than 50 priority journals, and 125 selective journals; plus books, research reports and proceedings. Subject coverage includes librarianship, classification, cataloging, bibliometrics, online information retrieval, information management and more. Coverage in the database extends back as far as the mid1960s.

limited my search to exact words "reference 2.0" and I limited the results to get only articles that published from 2007-2009 and I got three results .

1. How Many people have written their dissertations on Tolstoi’s War and Peace?

To search EBSCE databases for dissertation I chose MLA International Bibliography. This is the best EBSCO database that could help searching for answer to that question it offers a detailed bibliography of journal articles, books and dissertations. Produced by the Modern Language Association, the electronic version of the bibliography dates back to the 1920s and contains over 2.2 million citations from more than 4,400 journals & series and 1,000 book publishers. The indexed materials coverage is international and includes almost 60 titles from J-STOR’s language and literature collection as well as links to full text

I limited my advanced search to Tolistoi , and “War and Peace” to get only dissertation abstracts on these searching keywords, I received 15 dissertation abstracts to this topic, 1- Beyond the Napoloeonic Principle: Two Modes of Language Use

Tolstoy and Romain Rolland: A Comparative Study of the Epic Dimensions of War and Peace and Jean-Christophe By: Tumas, Elena Valiute; Dissertation Abstracts, 1964; 25: 1928-1929. (dissertation abstract) When I found out that the name Tolstoi should be written “Tolstoy” I tried again using this spelling , I found only 11 results for dissertation on this novel between them another 2 new titles for dissertation which are not included in the last search results using “Tolstoi” the one in red are not listed in the second search, and these two results are not listed in the first list 1. -The Use of the Future Tense in Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace By: Key, William Chiles; Dissertation Abstracts, 1966; 26: 3317-3318.
