1. CONSULS a. What does CONSULS Stand for? Consuls stands for the Catalog of the Connecticut State University Libraries and the State Library. b. What Libraries make up the holdings of CONSULS? The Central, Eastern, Southern, and Western Connecticut State University Libraries as well as the State Library of Connecticut make up the CONSULS system. c. Name some of the types of searches you can perform in CONSULS. Keyword, title, author and subject searches can all be performed on CONSULS, as can more advanced searches where fields can be limited by Boolean terms, language, year of publication, location and material type. d. How can you get help with searching on CONSULS? The Help page leads the user to a page which lists pages for searching techniques and searching tips—both of these pages are useful. If all else fails a student could always call the reference desk or have an online chat with someone at reference.

Technically, the Library of Congress is just that, the library and research division of the Congress of the United States. However, the LoC became the de facto national library during the 20th century and receives copies of every book, pamphlet, map, print and piece of music registered in the United States. b. What levels of searching can one perform in the LC Catalog? There are two basic types of search that can be performed via the LC Catalog: a basic search and a guided search. The basic search functions are detailed in the Basic Search Tips and include everything from keyword searches to expert searches to call number browsing. The guided search is really just a Boolean search laid out in different fields. c. Name some Web 2.0 projects currently posted to the LC catalog On the Library of Congress Catalog page there are links to both Print and Photographs online catalog (PPOC), which provides access to nearly 50% of division’s holdings, and Sound Online Inventory and Catalog (SONIC), where several projects are underway to increase the library’s online recordings. On the Library of Congress webpage itself, there are a number of Web 2.0 projects listed like “Library Experience at myLoc.gov,” “Webcasts from the Library,” and the “Alfred Whital Stern Collection of Lincolnia” online.

The United States Copyright Office is part of the Library of Congress, it is located in a Library of Congress building and the pre1978 records can be viewed via the Library of Congress’ website link to Copyright Records.

3. British Lending Library a. What is the main Catalog of the British Library Called? The main catalogue of the British Library is called the Integrated Catalogue. b. What are some of the early printed catalogs in the British Catalog? Two of the earliest catalogues are Bibliothecae Regiae Catalogus and Bibliotehca Grenvilliana. Some of the earlier printed catalogs are the Manuscripts Catalogue, the Catalogue of Wolley Charters and the Sloane Printed Books Catalogue. c. What services are offered by the Bristish Library? In person, the British Library offers workshops, tours, educational programs and activities for classes and groups. Online, the British Library offers a number of interactive programs including one on “Sacred Texts,” one on “Taking Liberties,” and one on British

Name some of the special catalogs from the library on the Web The Catalogue of Photographs, the Catalogue of Bookbindings and the Evanion Catalogue—all of these catalogues are unique to the British Library.

4. OCLC Catalog a. What is the OCLC Catalog called? It is called WorldCat. OCLC is actually an acronym for the Online Computer Library Centre (originally the Ohio College Library Centre). b. What is the difference between the OCLC Catalog and the other three catalogs above? OCLC is a consortium of many libraries—it is a cooperative instead of an institutional catalogue. c. What is another name for OCLC based on our previous discussions on electronic sources of information? OCLC is also available through FirstSearch. d. Is there a free version of the OCLC catalog?
