Olympics - History Ancient Olympics : •

According to legend, the ancient Olympic Games were founded by Heracles ( the Roman Hercules) , a son of Zeus.



In Ancient Greece, at a place called Olympia, the first Olympic Games were held at 776 BC .



The Ancient Olympic Games were held every four years, for nearly thousand years. The Games, like all Greek Games, were an intrinsic part of a religious festival held in honor of Zeus.



In 393 CE, the Roman emperor Theodosius I, a Christian, abolished the Games because of their pagan influences.



The very first modern Olympic Games opened in the first week of April 1896.

The very first modern Olympic Games opened in the first week of April 1896- Athens, Greece



Pole vaulting, sprints, shot put, weight lifting, swimming, cycling, target shooting, tennis, marathon and gymnastics were all events at the first Olympics.



An Olympiad is a period of four successive years.



Women were first allowed to participate in 1900 at the second modern Olympic Games.



Because of World War I and World War II, there were no Olympic Games in 1916, 1940, or 1944.



Tennis was played at the Olympics until 1924, then reinstituted in 1988



The 2004 Olympic Games in Athens was called the Games of the XXVIII Olympiad.

The Official Olympic Flag •





Created by Pierre de Coubertin in 1914, the Olympic flag contains five interconnected rings on a white background. The five rings symbolize the five significant continents and are interconnected to symbolize the friendship to be gained from these international competitions. The colors were chosen because at least one of them appeared on the flag of every country in the world. The Olympic flag was first flown during the 1920 Olympic Games.

The Olympic Flame •

The Olympic flame is a practice continued from the ancient Olympic Games.



In Olympia (Greece), a flame was ignited by the sun and then kept burning until the closing of the Olympic Games.



The flame first appeared in the modern Olympics at the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam.

INDIAN HISTORY IN OLYMPICS •

India is credited for first participating at the Olympic Games in 1900, with a lone athlete (Norman Pritchard) winning two medals in athletics. The nation first sent a team to the Summer Olympic Games in 1920, and has participated in every Summer Games since then. India has also competed at several Winter Olympic Games since 1964.



The Indian Hockey team at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, later going on to defeat Germany 8-1 in the final



Indian athletes have won a total of 17 medals, mostly in field hockey. The men's field hockey team was dominant in Olympic competition, winning eleven medals in twelve Olympiads between 1928 and 1980, including six successive gold medals from 1928–1956.



The National Olympic Committee for India is the Indian Olympic Association, and was created in 1927
