HATT display highlights Plateau economic development

On Thursday, October 29, at the Coolbaugh Municipal Building, Women’s Resources of Monroe County held a vigil against domestic cruelty. Some cool stuff happened there, including presentations and a time of sharing how lives have been touched by domestic cruelty. Below is just a bit of the information that was shared.

How to end violence against women & children Work for full equality between men and women in society and in personal relationships. Examine the ways we legitimize male violence. Understand that what it means to ʻbe a manʼ is defined by society. Start on the playground. Unplug boys and girls from violent media. Promote good sports etiquette & hire coaches committed to nonviolence. Do not use ʻlike a girlʼ or ʻlike a womanʼ as a put-down. Encourage athletic activities that involved cooperation, fun, physical health and camaraderie. Teach children how to settle conflicts peacefully. Recognize that verbal and emotional cruelty is also violence. Understand that love does not involve control or ownership. Remember:anger is a feeling; violence is an action. Do not express feeling with fists. Teach boys and girls effective, respectful ways to express frustration, sadness and anger. We are all role models. Be nurturing, love and caring. Do not belittle, humiliate or hit children. Advocate for anti-violence laws and enforcement. Recognize that the availability of guns increases lethal violence. Ask local and elected officials to take action. Teach your daughters that respect is just a minimum. Teach your sons the same. Teach boys and girls to communicate clearly in relationships, and that ʻnoʼ really does mean ʻno.ʼ Question rape myths. Recognize that alcohol and drugs feed violence. Never excuse behavior by saying ʻboys will be boysʼ Confront homophobia – it pushes men into being tough. Do not use ʻgayʼ as a put-down. Recognize that individual violence is supported by social systems based on power and control. Praise gentle boys. Encourage children to trust their instincts; believe victims and children. Support your local domestic violence and rape crisis center.

The second phase of changes in Economic Development in Tobyhanna Township from the 1930-40s to today is being shown at the display cabinet of the Historical Association of Tobyhanna Township at the Clymer Library, located on Firehouse Road in Pocono Pines. This phase includes past and current activities from Pocono Pines and Pocono Summit. Tobyhanna Township maintained a fairly even population

from the 1920s into the early 1960s of about 1,000 people. In the late 1960s recreational developments started arriving and today the population is approximately 7,350 with considerably more folks here in the summer season. The display features five elements: township facilities, education, transportation, resorts/ recreation, and commercial activities. Over the past 60 to 70 years dramatic changes have taken place. The display features scenes from the earli-

Annville is one of these communities, being host to Lebanon Valley College. On Sunday about 6 p.m. we were passing through Annville on the way home, and we were hungry. There’s only one main street, so we drove up and down, and spied a cute little restaurant beside the town’s movie theater. Seth’s Sightings Itʼs done—actually, almost done. The leaves on the maple tree in our back yard still beautifully golden, now are mostly lying upon the lawn and patio, on the roof of the house, and of course, in the rain gutters. Within a matter of days, the tree will

be bare. Iʼve been raking up as many as possible, piling them in the yard and putting them up against the curb outside in the street where the top of the tree hangs over the pavement. I am reminded that I actually like rak-

ing. Itʼs a nice bit of exercise, mindless. The mindless part can be very relaxing, as long as I remember to put my mind back into my head, and not leave it outside in the pile of leaves. I had one of those moments this week. It was Thursday evening, and Ruth and I had gone shopping after attending the opening night of the Ringling Brothers Circus in WilkesBarre. There are some items such

as bags of Peetʼs brand coffee that are only available at stores there. We picked up a few of these things, the coffee, house brand items, Polar seltzer, etc. I paid for it all, and added a donation for the food charity, then gathered things up and headed for our car, and home. Back home, we unpacked the bags to find that weʼd apparently left a bag containing the Peetʼs coffee and the Polar seltzer somewhere.

We checked the vehicle that weʼd taken to Wilkes-Barre and found it empty. After double-checking at the house on Friday, I realized that I had left the bag at the grocery store. This is not exactly a senior moment, more of a middle-aged one, but with all the stresses of the week, Iʼd done something that Iʼd never done before, because Iʼm the one who

usually double checks to see that Iʼve gathered everything. We found the receipt, and called the store, and described the bagʼs contents, three items including the precious coffee. The evening manager recalled putting these items back on the shelves, not long before my call, and she told me to come back with my receipt, and pick those items up the next time I was in the area. I did that over the weekend, and am now back in my usual mode of double-checking of groceries, and Ruth is now properly caffeinated. Saturday Ruth had volunteered her time for her library, and I did raking and errands and some work at the office, and some work on the road. I used the time driving to look for whatever remaining fall colors might exist. There isnʼt much, but occasionally there will be a tree or a bush in yellow or red. The rest seems to be the brown that oak leaves get, or nothing at all, just bare branches. It was a trip between Blakeslee and Mount Pocono made in a moderate rain that reminded me that summer is finally over. Yes, thereʼs baseball for Phillies and Yankees fans, but really itʼs time to start putting away summer clothing. Itʼs also time to break out the Thanksgiving decorations. Inflatable ghosties and ghoulies and spooky stuff now come down, to be replaced by inflatable turkeys. No, Iʼm not serious, since all of you know that as far as decorating is concerned, the next holiday is Christmas. Spooky Snoopies get replaced by those with

Santa hats. Iʼd like it if there was more time spent decorating for Thanksgiving, which I consider to be a much nicer holiday than Halloween. Halloween is about selling stuff, with not a little bit of the “gimmies” thrown in, especially on trick-or-treat night. Our Rotary Club gave away nearly 500 hotdogs, plus many cups of hot chocolate and cider. It rained heavy enough to delay the start of trick-or-treating on Saturday night. I waited until the rain let up to take some photos of the Halloween night goings-on before arriving to help the Rotary Club. That evening tired me out. The extra hour of sleep was very well used. Sunday, the weather report said sunshine later in the day. This was the last day of the PA Renaissance Faire season, and weʼd set aside time to attend. Our arrival was much earlier than normal, and appreciated, as the crowd was not yet heavy. We were able to be in close on some shows, including the terrific tournament joust—a display of skill and very entertaining, which we will look to see again next year. And we were almost standing on the chessboard. People turned out as the afternoon wore on, but with the sun setting early, the temperature dropped, and I went from wearing my Renaissance Faire T-shirt to wearing my sweatshirt to wanting another layer. It was a great day for costumes. Weʼre now counting the days again until next Augustʼs opening days. We were home too late to listen to the Eagles, except for the final score, a big win; Penn State? Also a big win; and later that night, the Phillies? Oh well…

Police Beat At 5:30 p.m. on 11-2, someone riding in a gold or beige colored Jeep Wrangler shot a 17 y.o. boy in the abdomen while the teen was riding a scooter along Glade Dr. South in Emerald Lakes, Tunkhannock Twp. The Jeep then sped off towards Long Pond Road. The teen was taken via PMR EMS ambulance to CMC Scrantonʼs trauma unit for treatment of a gunshot wound. Pocono Mountain Regional Police Detectives are investigating—anyone with any information is asked to call them at 895-2400 to help solve this serious crime.

by Seth Isenberg

PA State Police—Fern Ridge was involved in the search for a Pleasant Valley West, Penn Forest Twp. woman who was missing after failing to arrive at her destination the morning of 10-29. PMRPD was asked by Bucks Countyʼs D. A. to pick up a fugitive reportedly seen at the Quality Inn in Mt. Pocono, at 9:45 a.m. on 10-30, officers went to the motel and located the man, 44 y.o. Jonathan D. Evans, and arrested him without incident. His new Pocono lodgings are courtesy of Monroe County taxpayers—at the jail. 10-26 6:18 p.m., PMRPD officers on patrol spotted a Lincoln SUV pulled over on Kings Way, an entrance to Pocono Farms East in Coolbaugh Twp. Police observed a woman “urinating in view of the public” behind the vehicle. She was given a citation for disorderly conduct. 10-30 1:24 a.m., PMRPD responded to a call to a Candle Dr., Candlewicke Estates, Tunkhannock Twp. (Long

Pond) home about a dispute between stepfather and stepson. No criminal activity was found. Police were back 15 minutes later, because the 50 y.o. had a meltdown and took a crowbar to the T.V. and to windows in the home. He was charged with harassment. Discovered 10-31, someone smashed a window on a home on Dryden Dr., Towamensing Trails, Penn Forest Twp. A 15 y.o. girl assaulted a 41 y.o. woman at a home on Matterhorn Dr. in Sierra View, Effort, and gave the older woman a black eye. The girl earned a stay in a Children and Youth facility, 11-2, PSP-F. There was a bunch of mailbox vandalism in and around Effort, Saylorsburg and Kunkletown, including three exploded mailboxes. PMRPD arrested a 58 y.o. Jasmine Dr., APCP, Tobyhanna woman on simple assault and harassment charges due to an incident on 10-5 where she had a “physical confrontation” with her 16 y.o. daughter and 81 y.o. mother. PSP-F is investigating harassing phone calls to an Effort woman, 10-18 to 20.

Stealin’ Between 10-23 and 30, someone broke into a home on Route 903 in Penn Forest Twp. by kicking in the basement door. Once inside, thieves removed copper pipes in the basement and bathrooms, PSP-Lehighton is investigating and would appreciate any tips regarding this theft—call them at 610-377-4270. PSP-L is investigating a burglary into a Hawthorne Dr., Pleasant Valley Estates, Polk Twp. home. Thieves removed three laptop computers, a Nintendo DS game system and an iPod, between 3:30 and 6 p.m. 10-26. Between midnight and 2 p.m. on 10-28, someone broke into a Chickasaw Drive, Effort garage and stole various items, PSP-F. Between 10-28 and 31, a Pine Tree Lane, Polk Twp. home, was entered by force. Burglars took a 46” Sony TV, Dell laptop computer, various tools, a John Deere push mower, a 3-piece leather luggage set, a Kenmore vacuum, womenʼs winter clothes, a

Singer sewing machine, linens, a comforter, pillows, an antique clock, a toolbox, two garbage cans and a tool box, PSP-L. The Journal of the Pocono Plateau, Week of November 5, 2009–PAGE 15 Overnight 10-29 to 30, two unlocked vehicles parked at homes on Beech Lane in Pleasant Valley Estates in Polk Twp. were entered. Thieves took a customized compound bow (Bowtech Mighty Might, camouflage color) worth about $1,000, a Nikon range finder, Brunton Eturna binoculars and a Garmin GPS – about $1,680 worth of items, PSP-L. Discovered 10-30, someone broke into the unattached garage of a vacation home on Pine Tree Lane in Polk Twp. and stole 8 bottles of beer, PSP-L.

Discovered 10-31, someone broke the lock on the rear sliding door of a Lucretius Trail, Towamensing Trails, Penn Forest Twp. home. Once inside, the thief ransacked the place, stealing several items, PSP-F. 4:30 p.m. on 11-2, a 20something man stole a purse from a shopper at Kinsleyʼs ShopRite, then fled in a silver Saturn Aura, PSP-F. PSP-F is investigating an identity theft incident—someone opened a Sprint account using information of a 60 y.o. Effort woman.

The Pocono Plateau is not high enough for some PMRPD on patrol at the WalMart in Mt. Pocono made contact with a 22 y.o. Tobyhanna woman who was having a dispute with her boyfriend while at the store. Further investigation found that she had a hypodermic needle, a silver spoon, cotton swabs and a cloth cord—items knows as a “kit” for heroin users. She will be charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, 10-13, 6:46 p.m. A vehicle code violation led to a traffic stop at 8 p.m. on 10-18 on Route 940 at Long Pond Rd.

The driver and passenger, a 50-something couple from Royersford, PA, were found to have been smoking marijuana. The driver was arrested for possession of a small amount of the drug and some paraphernalia, PMRPD. At 3:04 a.m. on 10-24, PMRPD officers on patrol spotted a car stopped alongside Route 940. Its lights were on, and its engine running. Police stopped to investigate and found the driver unconscious. The car was still in drive… When awakened, the 24 y.o. Mt. Pocono woman was seen to be drunk. She could barely

stand, and admitted that she could not do any field sobriety tests, then refused to try. She also refused a blood test. Police took her to HQ and processed her and also called her parents, to whom she was released. DUI charges will be filed. PMRPD was called to Kmart at 4 p.m. on 10-27 to deal with a Scranton-area couple, ages 26 and 37, who were caught trying to steal video games worth nearly $245. The 37 y.o. man had tried to discard hypodermic needles and empty

PMRPD was called to a report of a fight in Pocono Farms East, Coolbaugh Twp. at 12:44 a.m. on 10-31. Participants fled before police arrived, so officers began a patrol of the area. Finding a young man walking along the road, they stopped to speak with him. He provided a false name. Police found him to be drunk, and underage (about 16). They took him home,

learned his identity, and released him to his mother. He will face charges via Monroe County Juvenile Probation of underage drinking and giving false identification to police. 12:47 a.m., another PMRPD team made a traffic stop in Blakeslee corners and found a 29 y.o. Buck Twp. man who had a bit of personal pot in his possession. He will be charged. 4:30 a.m., PMRPD stopped a car on Route 940 in Pocono Summit for a traffic violation. Officers found three 20 y.o. men in the car, all of whom had been drinking. A consent search using PMRPDʼs K-9 located 14 bags of marijuana in a backpack. of the men became drunk, and started to cause problems. The homeowner asked 30 y.o. Peter Molo, of Allentown, to leave. He refused. The homeowner and another man tried to force Molo out of the house, but Molo fought with them, refusing to leave, and was hurt during the struggle. The homeowner then called the PMRPD for help. Police arrived to find Molo visibly drunk, and with dried blood beneath his nose. Police will charge Molo with defiant trespass. PMR EMS was called to take Molo to the hospital for treatment. 6:15 p.m., PSP-F found a car that had been driven off Route 715. Stopping to investigate, the driver of the car showed signs of being drunk. He was arrested on suspicion of DUI, and taken to the hospital for a blood test. Charges are pending the results. An 18 y.o. driver became impatient while driving Route 115 behind a Martz bus.
