RPL Hosts Jackie Torrence Storytelling Festival in Granite Quarry Join the Rowan Public Library for a day of storytelling and fun at the 2009 Jackie Torrence Storytelling Festival to be held at Granite Lake Park, Granite Quarry, on Saturday, October 17 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. This is a family friendly, multicultural event that is dedicated to the memory of Rowan County’s own “Story Lady.” Storytellers from throughout North Carolina have been invited to be a part of this very special day, including: Michael Reno Harrell, Appalachian tales; Obakunle Akinlana, Nigerian Folk Tales and Music; Lona Bartlett, North Carolina Tales; Elisha Minter, “Mother Minter”; Ramona Moore Big Eagle, Native American Tales; Bobbie Pell, Celtic Tales; Patricia Trueblood,

“Grandma Honey,” Original Folk Tales; and Ilse Cardelle, Latin American Tales. Concessions will be provided by the Granite Quarry Civitans or bring your own picnic lunch. Later that day there will be musical programs by local music groups, so plan a full day of cultural festivities!

Book Chats For Children Begin Children in grades 2-5 are invited to participate in “Book Chats,” a new program at RPL’s South Rowan Regional Library in China Grove. Each child will read a selected book and then come into the library to participate in a discussion and other related activities. Featured books are: • Stanley and the Magic Lamp by Jeff Brown, October 15 at 4:15 p.m. — Grade 2. •

The Chocolate Touch by Patrick Skene Catling, November 5 at 4:15 p.m. — Grades 3-4.



No Talking by Andrew Clements, November 19 at 4:15 p.m. — Grades 4-5.

Registration is required and space for the program is limited. Registration will begin three weeks before each scheduled program. At the time of registration each child will get a copy of the selected book to check out on their library card. Friends of RPL Gift Baskets on Sale October 31 Friends of RPL gift baskets will go on sale Saturday, October 31. All proceeds from the sales of these baskets go to support library programs. This year’s baskets are better than ever and meet a wide variety of interests. Each basket is beautifully finished and ready to go — no wrapping needed! They make great Christmas, birthday, and baby shower gifts. Last year there were over 500 items offered at all three RPL locations. Start your holiday shopping early when the sale begins October 31. “Oddball” Films at RPL in October Four unique films are featured in RPL’s “Oddball October” film series. Movies are free and begin at 6:30 p.m. every Tuesday in the Stanback Auditorium in RPL’s Salisbury branch. Popcorn and lemonade are served. Children should be accompanied by an adult. October 6: The Visitor — Richard Jenkins stars as a disillusioned Connecticut economics professor whose life is transformed by a chance encounter in New York City. October 13: Juno — Juno's smart script and direction are matched by assured performances in a coming of age story with a 21st century twist.

October 20: Doubt — Academy Award nominees Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Viola Davis, and Amy Adams star in the film version of John Patrick Shanley’s Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winning play. October 27: Last Chance Harvey — Romantic comedy starring Academy Award winning actors Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson.

Seven people attended East’s first computer class, Basic Windows, in September at RPL’s East branch in Rockwell. The class was held in a meeting room using laptop computers to create a mobile lab.
