RPL Celebrates Tenth Annual Stories By The Millstream Festival To celebrate Rowan Public Library’s 10th annual Stories by the Millstream Festival, performer Jim Weiss will be at the library for a family storytelling program. This exciting event will take place on Thursday, September 17, at 7:00 p.m. at RPL’s Stanback Auditorium in Salisbury. Jim Weiss has been telling stories for over 25 years, performing throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, and the Middle East. In 1989 he formed a production company, Greathall Productions, with his wife and has since then produced over forty storytelling recordings that include American Tall Tales, Heroes in Mythology, The Prince and the Pauper, and Treasure Island.

History Video Premieres in August The Friends of Rowan Public Library and the staff of RPL’s Edith M. Clark History Room have once again collaborated in the ongoing video series “A Ramble Through Rowan’s History” and want to share their latest video with the public. The new video, The Struggle for Liberty, 1753-1775, surveys the experiences of Rowan citizens from the founding of the county in 1753 up to the eve of the Revolutionary War. This segment focuses primarily on the French and Indian War, particularly the attack of the Cherokee on Fort Dobbs and the colonial protest movement known as the Regulation.

Association Notable Award, and the Storytelling World Award. On the following morning, Friday, September 18, Weiss will be the featured teller and join twenty-four other storytellers as part of the annual Stories by the Millstream Festival for all the second grade students in Rowan County, sponsored by the Friends of Rowan Public Library. The culmination of this early struggle was the Rowan Resolves of 1774. This is a two part series; the second section of “The Struggle for Liberty” will describe events of the Revolutionary War and Rowan’s contributions to the liberty of the nation. Please join us for the premier showing of the movie on Saturday, August 8 at 2:00 p.m. in the Stanback Auditorium of the Rowan Public Library in Salisbury. Salisbury Rowan Reads! Nearly 400 children and their parents attended a Salisbury—Rowan Reads! event held Wednesday, July 15 at RPL Headquarters in Salisbury. Children received free books and listened to stories read by city and county government officials. Children also participated in games run by the Parks and Recreation Department and entered a drawing to win great prizes. These free events are sponsored by the City of Salisbury and Rowan County with support from municipalities throughout the county. August events will be held from 5:00 p.m. — 7:00 p.m. on: •August

August Movie Nights Feature Recent Releases RPL will feature “Recent Releases” for this month’s movies. Movies will be shown each Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in the Stanback auditorium at RPL’s Headquarters in Salisbury. The movies are free and popcorn and lemonade are served. Some movies are inappropriate for younger audiences. Children should be accompanied by an adult. August 4: Knowing features Nicholas Cage as an astrophysicist who learns of future disasters. August 11: Inkheart is adapted from Cornelia Funke’s book about someone who is able to bring book characters to life by reading aloud. August 18: Push tells of a young man (Chris Evans) with telekinetic

abilities and a clairvoyant teenager (Dakota Fanning) who join forces. August 25: Slumdog Millionaire* is about a game show winner accused of cheating. Flashbacks show how his life experiences helped him answer the questions correctly.
