Goals of the Family Liaisons for the 9-11 Commission

The main goal of the family liaisons for the 9-11 Commission is to communicate with the families of the victims of 9-11. That communication should be on two levels. The first should be with the Family Steering Committee and the second should be with the families at large, either through the groups they belong to or individually. The web will be the main stay of our communication since it is not possible to obtain a mailing list of the families of the victims. First step - send out a letter from the Chairman and Vice Chairman to the families using the web sites of the family groups, government, Red Cross, or any group who will cooperate with us and post our information on their site. That letter should include an introduction to the Commission and the work of the Commission. We could include the information sheet already in existence with the letter. Also in the letter the family liaisons should be introduced with our office address, our family liaison web address and if possible our 1-800 telephone number. The letter should encourage the families to communicate their questions and concerns through the family liaisons. Second step - Post the same letter on our public site by using a link that is titled Family Liaison. The letter should refer the families to the family liaison web mail address. We should also mention that the information for our scheduled hearings along with the agendas and directions will be on this site, as well as occasional updates on our work progress if the Commissioners think this is an acceptable idea and not an invitation to too much controversy. Third step - We could invite the families to use the family laision address to send their questions and suggestions for the Commission generally and specifically for the hearings. The same system could be used for commentary after a hearing. Fourth - We have promised to have monthly conference calls with the FSC and Philip. Occasionally we might consider having Chairman or Vice Chairman if they have the time and inclination. We do not have to promise the Chairman or Vice Chairman, but we could try to have them on occasionally. After the call we can have notes from the call put on the website along with the notes from Carol Ashley or whoever is taking notes for the FSC as well. Fifth - The hearings should be advertised in the major newspapers. Included in that ad should be the agenda, directions, time and the family liaison web mail address.
