Lesson Plan School: Sheen Mount Primary School Address: West Temple Sheen, SW14 7RT Teacher: Mrs Reynolds Curriculum Area / Area of Learning: Numeracy - Measures (Cross curricular link with Geography – The Lighthouse Keeper stories) Year: 1 The lesson objective: To be able to use a ruler accurately to measure distance.

How the visualiser was used? The Visualiser was used by the teacher to demonstrate how to use a ruler correctly. The children were able to see on a large screen where they should be positioning a ruler when they start to measure and how to read off the measurement. This image was left on the whiteboard for all of the children to see as they completed their work. Thus enabling the children to check that they had used their ruler and positioned it correctly. At the end of the session the children were able to compare their measurements with each other and discuss any misconceptions that might have occurred. A lower ability group were able to access this at a separate time and complete this as a group, counting the units on the whiteboard for each measurement.

The benefits of the Visualiser to teaching & learning: • Enabled all of the children to see what was being demonstrated by watching on a large screen. • Children were able to observe the correct way to measure length and how to read off the measurement. • Children were able to refer back to the big screen if they were having difficulties positioning the ruler for guidance. • Misconceptions regarding measuring were able to be discussed, shown and corrected on a large screen.
