Mataura Village Messenger: "Supporting your local community".

Hello Mataura! We are now well into count down to Christmas and life for many of us is getting busier with the extra jobs needing to be done, more time in the garden, presents to be bought, cards to be sent and of course all the social events . This month's pat on the back goes to Plunket, Heart Health and the Community mental health teams who presented the health awareness events in our town. They were well organised and there were a wide range of health professionals available with information . Contributions for this newsletter have come from: • Barbara Cunningham •Arts Group • Mataura Village Co-op • Task Force • Mataura Community Board • Gala Day organisers • Historic Society. Until next time, remember, never be afraid to give things a go. It was amateurs who built the Ark, and Professionals who built the Titanic. Cheers Margaret

Everyone get out your pen, this is a must mark date for your calendar Sunday 22 November 10.30 - 3pm.

Nothing but full attendance is accepted, get behind your community and join together for an action packed day of fun, laughter, full bellies and a chance to catch up with your friends or family.

Following a successful gala last year we are joining together with the local community groups to bring you another enjoyable day out. Make sure you all have a go at working out our Fabulous Gala

Scavenger hunt which will be available from Friday 13 at the Library or Mataura School. There are some great family prizes to be won. CRT in Gore have kindly donated swede seeds for the children of the Mataura Community to have a go at growing. This will result in a special competition next year involving the swedes they have grown. So forget about mowing the lawns, don’t worry about making lunch and hold off doing some of that Christmas shopping, come on down and spend some time with us. See you all there. Helen

Mataura Community Garden

Things have been busy in the garden and our faithful band of workers have been doing a marvellous job. If you are in the vacinity of the garden stop and have a look. We have potatoes up as are the peas, broad beans, carrots and parsnips. Cabbages, cauliflowers and broccoli are all planted as are kumikumi, pumpkins and courgettes. A few radishes have been eaten. We have been given a grant from HEHA and have purchased Frost Cloth and something to keep the birds at bay. Now we are beginning to think about where the vegetables need to go when they are ready for picking. We intend to give it away but we need names of people who would like to have fresh vegetables. We are mainly thinking of the elderly, sick and people with young families. Maybe there are people who would also like to have cooking classes which we can arrange. If you know of any one whom we could help even

MATAURA TASKFORCE

Another Month gone and we are now fully into the organizing of the Mataura Xmas Gala to be held on the 22nd of November at the school from 10.30 till approx 3pm. We are pleased to say that thanks to funding from the Mataura Licensing Trust that this year we are having the climbing wall which is always very popular. There are many other activities as well and all we need now is a fine day. The Taskforce is continuing to work towards a more connected and community minded town and in the new year will be holding more events to entertain you. The meet and Greet morning teas have not grown as we had hoped but we are still getting some new residents to town coming along so it is all worthwhile. An art and craft group is running every Tuesday night at 7.30 at the Elderly citizens rooms, a great way to socialize. We now have a mainly music group started on a Monday morning at the Presbyterian Church

if it is outside the above guidelines, please let us know as this is the only way we will get to know where the need is in our community. We need your help please. Thank you. Barbara 203 891

hall and everyone is very welcome. Our goal is to also get a playgroup up and running before too long so we need to know if this would be supported. Playcentre Association are more than willing to let a playgroup start up in the Playcentre building. To this end we have just obtained a person to do some voluntary work around the building to bring it up to the standard that it needs to be for this. We would ask that if anyone has outside paint, especially white wood primer that they no longer need would you please consider donating to Playcentre. If so please contact me on 203.3417 and I will gladly take it off your hands. David Wilson continues to work on his proposal and there will be more on this as it moves along. Please help us by working with us.. Laurel Turnbull

The Ants Dick Report

I’d like to welcome you all to a

new segment of the newsletter. This is where I get to have my say, and you all may ask why. Simple, because I can. I am what most people would call a blow in, meaning, you guessed it, I’m not from down here. Do you know what gets up my nose about this country. It is “SPORTS MAD”. Hey lets face it, the ALL BLACKS cannot play to save themselves and the SILVER FERNS are hanging by their britches. As for CRICKET those days of glory have gone. I guess they are lucky now that the 20/20 has come about as that way it’s over a lot faster for them. I won’t even put The NATIONAL GOVT and the Rugby World Cup TV rights in the same sentence. Have your say back and enlighten me. Email: [email protected]
