‘What our Kaubans Say’ by Vincent Earl Enad and Gerald Rondina

As a kauban, what improvement can you offer to Metaphil in 2009? Isip usa ka Bidder, akong paningkamoton nga makakita ug mga barato ug dekalidad nga mga materyales para sa Estimating. Makahatag kini ug maayo nga bid prices para dako ug posibilidad nga makadaog sa bidding.

Excerpts from Christmas Party messages From our chair and CEO

Roberto E. Aboitiz We have executed our work programs well in 2008. RISQ has been our driving value proposition; and, it remains a strong focus for 2009 and the years to come. We have all used our ‘bugsay’ well in 2008; and, we will need to rely on it even more in 2009. The economic situation around the world is not good. Companies have collapsed and massive unemployment is occurring. Projects are being postponed but we are monitoring them. We need to prepare for difficult times. It is hard to make promises at this point but let me say this as your leader: we will price our jobs cheaper just to get work for us; we will be more aggressive in our marketing efforts and invest on travel to stay in contact with our customers; and, we will work even harder to bring work to Metaphil. You can count on a good fight to win, just like Pacquiao vs. dela Hoya. I thank Nap Pe, our President and COO for his strong leadership; all our team leaders, project managers, staff, and to all my kaubans for your passion and valuable contributions to make Metaphil an industry leader. Let us be confident that we will survive this storm and continue our vision to build Metaphil as a Number 1 construction and fabrication company in the Philippines.

From our president and COO

Nap R. Pe, Jr.

Jally A. Colina Fitter

Angay nga preparado ang tanan nga mga materyales ug ampingan ang mga gamitunon sa trabaho. Para sad kini makahapsay sa pagtrabaho ug ang mga customer makahatag sad ug positibo nga feedback sa shop floor. Algen G. Maglasang Fitter

Akong paningkamutan nga makahatag ug maayo nga ideya o pamaagi aron mapalambo nako ang Metaphil pinaagi sa paghimo ug hapsay nga proseso sa pag-audit. Marlon Q. Pesquera Jr. Auditor

The contest was organized by the Teamwork Champs as part of their campaign for teamwork last December. Only recyclable and indigenous materials were allowed in crafting the Christmas trees. Winners were Engineering & Design (first place), Contracts (second), Operations (third), Estimating (fourth), Executive office (fifth), and IT (sixth). The judges were so impressed with all the entries, thus proclaiming six winners instead of three. Indeed, the contest showed teamwork and, of course, our kaubans’ ingenuity and talent.

“If human beings are perceived as potentials rather than problems, as possessing strengths instead of weaknesses, as unlimited rather than dull and unresponsive, then they thrive and grow to their capabilities.” - Barbara Bush

Metaphil celebrates wild wild west Christmas ‘08 by Marianne Ramo-Caballero

Metaphil’s Christmas party was held last December 12 at the Metaphil International, Inc. (MII) Modular Fabrication Yard, Balamban. Situated at the western part of Cebu, the theme was “Wild Wild West”. Over 2,800 kaubans and their spouses attended the event in their western attire. Aboitizland President and COO Andoni Aboitiz, FBMA President and COO Doug Border, Shinji Watadani, Kenji Kawano and Hitoshi Takahara of Tsuneishi Heavy Industries also graced the event. The party started with a holy mass officiated by Rev. Fr. Manuel Tan. President and COO Nap Pe warmly welcomed everyone to the party. Chair and CEO Roberto Aboitiz (REA) delivered his annual Christmas message. Again, kaubans showcased various talents of singing and dancing. The interdepartment performances were grand and were lauded by kaubans and guests. ManCom team and the team leaders led by REA serenaded the crowd with Twist and Shout, Rhinestone Cowboy and Mary’s Boy Child. After the sumptuous dinner accompanied by a live band, more dance numbers energized the party. Featured in this year’s game show was the Kauban Singing Bee. One hundred contractual kaubans were given a chance to win the P10,000 grand prize. It was hosted by AVP-HR Christopher Camba with the assistance of Nestor Baliguat. Also part of the show were the Bandble Bee and

the lovely Honeybees. The last kauban standing was Bryan Pulvera of Fabrication, who won the grand prize for singing the last song of the final countdown correctly. The evening was capped with the traditional raffle and distribution of Christmas giveaways, a gesture of goodwill by Metaphil management. More than 300 lucky kaubans won the raffle draws. Among the major prizes were wow magic sing, digital camera and refrigerator. “Great affair. Well prepared and lots of fun! Congrats”, REA commented. CMC added, “Great job! So amazing seeing all kaubans gathered in one beautiful event! The big number required tremendous preparations, but also resulted to so, so, so much fun. I’m truly proud of all those who worked hard to make the event successful. Kudos! Cheers to all!” It was a significant event for Metaphil as kaubans from CMO, SDK, MII and projects were all in one place, one gathering, one Metaphil for the first time. It was dubbed a night to remember – and indeed the night will be remembered for a long time. - Continue to page 02

In appreciation for Metaphil’s gesture, the Balamban Council hosted the turnover ceremony which was graced by Balamban Mayor Alex Binghay and wife Rosy. Metaphil President and COO Nap Pe personally turned over the footbridge through the mayor and to the Council. A Plaque of Appreciation to Metaphil was also received by VP for Operations Boy Yangco. As an ending, a sumptuous lunch culminated the event.

Metaphil, through its KAUBAN ‘TA CSR* initiatives, constructed a 16.5m long by 1.2m wide steel footbridge to connect Sitio Centro and Punta. The local residents, specially the children of Sitio Punta, are the main beneficiaries of the project who cross over to Sitio Centro where the Abucayan Elementary School is located. For a long time, crossing to the other side is difficult and risky especially during or after a downpour of rain as residents would cross the riverbed or take a longer path. Absences from school became a normal situation during rainy weather thus weakening the children’s educational foundation.

Metaphil helps in Aboitiz Media Party By Zeny N. Novabos

Balamban

We were the third batch of the Proud to be Kauban (PTBK) workshop. The group was excited to bond with fellow kaubans and to learn more about personal values. We were thankful and grateful to management because through this we were able to enhance our communication and listening skills and strengthen our kauban relationships. We held some group discussions, shared some actual life experiences and had teambuilding activities.

Every year, Aboitiz Group hosts a Christmas Party for Cebu Media friends. This year, the party was held in Marco Polo on November 28. Inspired by the reality hit show, the “Amazing Race”, “Kasadya sa Pasko sa Barangay Aboitiz” party, had ten fun games which included “Kaguray ug Lubi” and “Lubu-ay ug Mais”.

On the first day after long hours of learning and sharing, and having a venue which was so cool, some of our kaubans went either swimming, videoke singing or just watched TV at their cozy room while doing the assignment in preparation for the next day’s discussion.

The media party was even more fun with the participation of the Aboitiz executives who led the tribes as Datus and assistant Datus. Metaphil executives present were chair and CEO Roberto E. Aboitiz, Executive Committee member Stephen G. Paradies, CFO Stephen Tan and VP-Marketing Felma Yap.

We decided to call our batch the Teamwork champions (in short T-champs) since we would like to promote kauban Teamwork combined with discipline and strong personal values. We believe that it is important to build a “win-win” team consciousness, in order to develop quality of people who make up a quality company.

All smiles as the Corporate Communications Team gear up for the Media Party games.

An excerpt from AEV president and CEO Erramon Aboitiz’s remarks: “The party was a smashing success. Everyone had a great time. Everyone in the room was focused on the games. Congratulations to all those involved in making the affair a real success. The affair, its organization, and its execution really demonstrate who we are THE ABOITIZ WAY. We are very proud of all of you.” Corporate Communications members of the Aboitiz Group facilitated the games. Ever-willing to help were CIO and AVP-Procurement Zeny Novabos and volunteers Corporate Finance Analyst Elliezer Simega and Procurement Bidding Supervisor Mona Calva.

Such event gave a tremendous impact that made our kaubans more aware of their commitment, their value as employees and, most importantly, provided a better perspective and true meaning of our PTBK crusade.

It was a significant affair where everybody learned as they listened to kauban Nap who shared to the crowd the essence of Metaphil’s new vision: Reliability, Integrity, Safety and Quality (RISQ). Kauban Bob presented the bugsay principle, our call to action. All were inspired by our Most Valued Kauban (MVK) awardees, Felix Tura, Martin Gerard Tan and Richard Fuentes, as they set forward their bugsay and unfolded their stories and experiences of what made them great.

The group campaigned for kauban Teamwork with various definitions such as: unity, cooperation, group strength resulting in diminishing an individual’s weakness, solidarity based on company mission and vision, collaboration with the same goal in mind, and, last but not the least, synergy where 1+1 = 3.
