UNIVERSIDAD DE PLAYA ANCHA FACULTAD DE HUMANIDADES EARLY ENGLISH TEACHING PRACTICE 2009 OBSERVATION STAGE Name of student teacher: Geannella Villablanca Garrido Name of School: Colegio Particular Adventista Number of students: 38/ 42 Date: May 12, 2009

Class: 4 A / 2 B

Task Nº1: The school Refer to the general background of the school in a clear and brief way. Describe: •

Physical location: Errazuriz 1037, Quilpue.

Organisation: It is an international educational organisation based on values of the Seventh day Adventist Church. It is organised as many schools with authorities and administrative personal.

 School Director: Héctor Martínez Torres  U.T.P: Milena Meza Cortes  Discipline Coordinator: Iván Castillo Fuentes  Chiefs of Deparment.  Teachers.

Student population: 400 estimate

School rules: Rules are based on values of the Seventh day Adventist Church, such as; Respect, honesty, dedication, etc. All these on search of a good coexistence.

Some of the rules are:

 Respect and tolerate each other just as Jesus Christ did.

 To be always presentable, according with the image of the school.

 Always arrive on time, that includes classes and workships.

Task Nº2: The classroom Comment about:

• The atmosphere of the room: The atmosphere are noisy, we cannot forget that we are talking about teenagers, however, they usually participate in all the activities. • The levels of engagement in the room: I could say regular. Definitely if I try to compare this school with the last one, I can appreciate more interest in these teenagers. •

Students seating: The students are seating in a traditional way. It is a normal classroom.

Space: The classroom is small, it does not exist enough free space. Anyway every student has their seating.

Whiteboard location: The whiteboard is located in the front of the classroom.

Classroom equipment: Just the whiteboard and the seatings. If you need anything else as a television or a radio, you must ask for.

Task Nº3: The teacher Describe the following: •

Classroom routine: At the beginning of the morning, before to start the class, every day a worship is done. After thar the teacher reads for his students a meditation about how important the values are. Finally, the teacher starts his class asking for a review of the last class.

Motivation activities performed: Motivation is one of the most important facts inside the classroom. Mr Gallardo knows this for that reason he always congratulate his students. For example; the teacher has a cookies box, so when the students participate and answer correctly, he give them a cookie.

Learning activities conducted: Debates, hand out, and groups activities.

Material resourced used: The teacher works with the english book. Sometimes he does news activities like for example; “ create an invitation for extreme sport”

Stages of the lesson: Is a flexible routine. Every day is different to the last one.

Task Nº4: The learners In this observation task, focus on the things that help to create conditions for effective learning and on the aspects that play a part in preventing learning. •

How motivated are the learners? Why?

Are they taking part in their own learning? How?

Are they expecting the teacher to do the work for them?

Do they like to participate in group work? If so, how do they behave?

What kinds of learning activities do the students like the most? What do they like the least?

I am sure about how motivated are these students. They are conscious about their goals, future and expectancies. I can see them all day studying; math, sciences, language, etc. But, what about English? English by some of them is as a hobbie but it is not consider as an important subject. Unfortunately, English is not interesting for them as other subjects, and usually they expect that teacher or anybody do everything for them. For that reason students like to work in groups. I realized that students do not like to translate as an activity workshop. They prefer to do dynamic things.
