News Update Important info... Dear Members and Friends of DFC, Jesus said in Matthew 7:25 ‘The rain came down, the streams rose and the winds blew and beat against that house: yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.’ Whether you are building a house or raising children or beginning a new ministry like myself you want to start by building a firm foundation. Without a firm foundation in our lives and in our church we are susceptible to the wind and the waves. We must have a firm foundation! Beginning Sunday, October 25th, I will begin a series entitled ‘The Foundations of Faith.’ For five straight weeks I will be preaching on what I believe to be five foundations for the Christian life and for the life of the church. It will be for you, and for me, a time for us to discover, or rediscover, what truly is the foundation for our lives and the Kingdom! We will begin on the 25th with ‘The Gracious Gift of Grace’! The following four weeks I will preach on the Holy Spirit, The Church, How to be a Witness and finally How We Engage Our Culture for Christ. I ask for your prayers as we begin to lay a foundation of ministry that we trust will last for many years. I hope you will do your best to be here each and every Sunday of our series. I also ask you right now to ask friends and family to join you as we talk about these foundational themes. I have no doubt that God will move among us as we lift up His Son, Jesus. Could we not trust God for 30-50 commitments and recommitments during this time?! It can happen if we will invite hungry and hurting people to our church. May all of us be open to what God may ask of us during the next several weeks! I trust I will see you soon. Don’t give up on serving Him! To Him be all the glory! In His Amazing Grace! Pastor Shawn Please take a moment to read several announcements listed below that will appear in Sunday’s Insight. If you are viewing these in the eblast, click on each for important details; if you are reading this in the hard copy, please refer to the Insight for important details regarding these upcoming events. News Update “kotchadoingood!” Youth Department Thanks to the Youth Department for leading us in praise and worship last Sunday morning! Vince Rosales has worked diligently with the Rock Band and Collaboration Band. We want to thank Vince for working so closely with them and supporting them! And thanks to the Youth Department for helping us have a wonderful morning of praise and worship. Shipshape for Shawn Participants Thank you to the crew of people that showed up last Saturday (approximately 65 people) that helped us start the process of touching up the church in preparation for the Installation service this Sunday, October 18. Thanks also to those who showed up on Wednesday and worked along with Allen Betz on our exterior projects (landscaping, etc) that we couldn’t do on Saturday because of the inclement weather! We are anticipating another great group of people tomorrow (Saturday, October 17th) to turn out for another “Shipshape” day. See “How You Can Help” for more details! One of Our Own Congratulations to our own Jinger Haberer. Jinger works as principal at Hinkley High School. She was just named by Aurora Public Schools “2009 Distinguished Principal of the Year!” Way to go Jinger!!

News Update Board perspective... Brothers and Sisters in Christ, I've just returned from spending a little over a week visiting family in California. It was a wonderful time, but it's great to be back in Colorado. It's especially exciting as we look forward to this Sunday's events surrounding the official installation of Pastor Shawn as the leader of our DFC flock. We look forward with great anticipation to the plan our Father has for us in this next phase of the life of Denver First Church of the Nazarene! As I write this article, my dad would have been 82 years old today. I still miss him since his passing in 2006 on 9/11 -- twenty months, to the day, after my mom's death. I find myself reflecting more on what's really important in life these days. Oh, I still get sucked into the hectic pace of life and allow days to elapse where I drift in the doldrums of "accumulating" rather than tending to that which is significant. But He quickly pulls me back to an awareness of the brevity of the opportunity I have in this thing we call LIFE -- that span represented by the dash on our headstone marking the time between when we appear and when we exit the timeline of humanity. (Read the poem by Linda Ellis called "The Dash" if you have a moment.) It's funny, over the years I've gone from feeling vigorous to feeling rather vulnerable. It's not that I haven't been blessed with good health. I still feel quite healthy! But I recognize the fragility of life much more than I was formerly capable. As David (Psalm 39:5), Job (Job 7:7) and James (James 4:14) all recognized, our lives are just a whisper. We must be diligent to crush the tyranny of the insignificant to pursue that which is priceless. What is that? Bearing witness to the Gospel. Serving Him Alongside of You, Vini Giannatala

News Update timely news for the congregation... Pastor Shawn’s Installation Service This Sunday, October 18th, we will have the installation service for our new Lead Pastor, Shawn Siegfreid. Please note: our service will start early this week -- 10:00 am instead of the normal 10:30am. Friends, this will be a wonderful morning of celebration. We will turn a page in DFC’s history. Since Pastor Wellman was our pastor, our pastors have averaged more than 15 year tenures here at DFC. This will be an important and historic day! Please invite your family, friends and neighbors to be a part, and invite those you haven’t seen around DFC for a while. We will have a reception for Pastor Shawn, his family and special guests right after morning service. Please come meet Pastor Shawn. We will have light snacks to hold you over until you can grab some lunch. (If you have children to pick up from the nursery or children’s area, please do so before coming to the reception.) News Update timely news for the congregation... Kids Corner Trunk-or-Treat Saturday, October 31, 2009 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM When I was a child, the best resource available to answer a burning question was the Encyclopedia Britannica. Now it seems that a quick Google search will satisfy my curiosity. So, why not Google Trunk-or-Treat? If you do, you are sure to find an endless list of ideas that will encourage you to decorate your car and join the Children’s Department on Saturday, October 31, 2009 for our fall outreach opportunity. The Children’s Department is trusting that our Trunk-or-Treating Zone will be lined with 40 to 50 vehicles manned by volunteers who are eager to share a smile and hand out candy to the children who are planning to attend. Currently the Children’s Department has a team of people working to make sure that every detail is covered. Entertainment, food, cakewalk, obstacle course, vehicle registration, and safety are all aspects of this event that are being addressed by the Trunk-or-Treat committee. If you would like to assist in one of these areas, please contact Laura Nelson at 303/324-2890. We are thankful to those in our congregation who have already started to invite friends and neighbors. In addition, members of the Children’s Committee have placed flyers on community boards at places like Starbucks and the local library. On Sunday afternoon, many of our teens will be distributing Trunk-or-Treat door hangers to our DFC neighbors. Our teens are eager to let those in the immediate neighborhood know that all are welcome to attend. We are hoping to see you there too! Sincerely, Susan Foster

News Update timely news for the congregation... DFC Military Support Group For those of you who may have missed our message in the October 9th church E-Blast: - we are a group of concerned church members with relatives in our country's armed forces, and we meet on the first Sunday of each month from 5:00 - 6:00 PM in Room 200. Our next meeting will be on November 1st. (Point of contact - Pinky Sloane, 720-344-8825, [email protected]). There is a lengthy roster of our church's people in uniform on the back of the "Prayer Requests" brochure, available every Sunday at the main usher stations around the church. Here are some specific service members for whom you can pray right now: 1. Scott Long, grandson of Leon Long in the MASH class. Scott is an Army Ranger. He and his company in 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, are preparing now for a deployment, probably to Iraq some time after Thanksgiving. Please pray for the safety of the entire company, and that Scott and his fellow Rangers will know God's peace and wisdom. 2. Josh Zaker, son of Lee and Kathy Zaker. Josh, his wife, Stacy, and their two children live south of Tacoma, WA. Josh is going back on flight status in an Air Force C-17 transport aircraft unit at McChord Air Force Base, near Tacoma. Please pray for the whole family, and especially for Stacy and the children when Josh is away on a mission. Everyone is welcome to join us on November 1st to pray for and exchange information about these wonderful men and women in uniform and their families, and to continue planning for sending cards and letters to them, as well as "care" packages for this coming Christmas season.

News Update timely news for the congregation... Traditions Service Dr. Daniel Roysden will be speaking in our Traditions Service. Please join us at 6:00 pm on Sunday evening in the Diehl Chapel for a meaningful time of worship and teaching. Sad News Jerry Lester’s mother, Fern Lester, passed away on Thursday, October 15th. Her funeral service will be on Saturday, October 24th at Alsip and Persons Funeral Chapel, 404 10th Avenue South, Nampa, ID. Please be in prayer for the Lesters in this time of loss. 31st Annual IN Group Banquet - Saturday, November 21st This event will be at 6:00 pm in the Fellowship Hall. The theme is “Around the World with Dr. Jim Diehl.” Can you imagine the tales that Dr. Diehl has to tell? With his travels across the world, you know that he has some amazing stories! The evening will be dedicated to allowing him the time to tell his stories. Just wait, it will be incredible! The music will be provided by Van & Miriam Owen singing, with Linda Jackson on piano. Tickets are $20.00 (reserved by table number) and are available at the IN Group Booth (south entrance). Note: Semi-Formal dress. The IN Group is now open to all adults. The reception area will be open at 5:00 pm (in the Community Room).

News Update a final word...

This past week, a classical music station conducted an annual fundraiser as part of their broadcast. In a portion of the fundraiser, they were offering a 5 day, 4 night trip to New York City, complete with Broadway musicals and $1000 cash. As they made their appeal, they kept using the phrase, “Is your name in the box?” They expressed these words with such evangelistic fervor that, as I heard them asking this question each time, my mind flashed immediately to “Is your name written in the Lamb’s Book of Life?” It’s interesting how, in our society, we get excited about going to places like New York and experiencing some Broadway shows. We lack a sense of proportion, we don’t have our eyes fixed on what the real issues of life are and the ultimate question. That question is, “Is your name written in the Lamb’s Book of Life?” It’s likewise the question for our relatives, neighbors and family, all of those with whom we have contact. Today, let’s ask the Lord, over the course of the next 30 days, to put someone in our path specifically to whom He would like us to ask, in so many words, that ultimate question. Let’s proceed as faithful followers. Randy Smith
