PARENTS PAGE Do you know? The other day Chelsea told me a great story. She was a young girl in elementary school, and she really wanted a CD. It was the hottest new band out there called N’SYNC. This boy band was huge and everyone wanted their CD. Chelsea’s grandma bought it for her for Christmas. Her father, Terry, commandeered the CD and listened to the whole thing. I’m talking every word of this ear splitting pop boy band. It sounds like a bad dream listening to that whole CD. However, he did it anyway. Chelsea went on to tell me how her father wanted to make sure the music she was listening to wasn’t trash and that it was appropriate for her age. Was he too protective, should his children have had the choice to listen to what they want because they were individuals and can make their own choices? Should they be able to choose because they need to be exposed to those things? Should they choose so you don’t have to mess with it? Should they choose so you don’t have to be the protective parent?

This is where their world view is shaped.

What if I told you that some of the most popular bands Jr. High School students listen to promote murder, sex, drugs, suicide, and even female and male prostitution. I saw a Jr. High School student the other day wearing apparel of one of those bands. At that age should they be listening to that cause its cool? Is it the child’s choice, or the parents duty to guide this young individual who is under their care? It is a parents job to make sure their child is being influenced by the right things. This is their developmental stage, where their view world will be shaped. Who will have that influence? Who will instill those values? Please do not neglect this as rambling, or ultra conservatism, but listen to what it is, the eye is the lamp of the body, what goes in will shape the heart. Do you care enough to look into what your kid is listening to and watching?
