HOW TO CONTACT US
Welcome to The Learning Exchange Kate!
Darlene Brown Executive Director
Kate Strickland aka The Library Lady
Karen Mockler Administrative Assistant
If you drop into the TLE office, you may notice an unfamiliar person working at the computer in the corner, peeking out from behind a stack of library books. Allow me to introduce myself! My name is Kate Strickland and Everybody meet Kate! I’ve been hired to assist in the development of a circulation system for your library. Over the next 5 months, I’ll be processing every last resource in your library so that each one has been entered into the database, has been assigned keywords and has a barcode label. At the end of this process you will be able to search for resources using keywords and to sign out resources using your very own library card. I will keep you up-to-date on how the project is progressing and at the appropriate time we will train you in how to use the new system. I look forward to meeting all of you. Pop your heads over the books and say hello. Darlene has suggested that I be called “the library lady” but you can just call me Kate!

Jacques Demers at PROCEDE Conference Darlene Brown Executive Director
L to R Darlene Brown, Jacques Demers and Anne-Marie Lepage
I had the pleasure of attending the PROCEDE conference in St. Sauveur October 19-21st,
hosted by the Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board, where Jacques TLE Literacy Demers was one of the Sponsors: guest speakers. Using the conference theme • MERCK FROSST EMPLOYEES’ CHARITY TRUST FUND “No Mountain High Enough”, Jacques in- • LAVAL ROTARY CLUB spired the audience with stories from his • CANADA POST childhood, coaching, • DOMTAR and life experience.
President’s Message Donna Adrian President
I have had a setback with my foot, and am again using a brace and cane to walk. I am very disappointed and more than a little discouraged. At times it is very difficult to be optimistic. I wonder if I will ever walk with ease again. It is difficult to look forward. A wise friend of mine reminded me that my progress is great, that looking back to where I was last Feb. when I had the accident, I have improved amazingly well, and that I have accomplished many of my goals, including walking up stairs using two handrails. As students, each of you must evaluate your success, by looking at where you were when you began the literacy program, then, looking at the improvement in your reading and writing skills. The progress may be slow, but there is progress. You will accomplish your hopes and dreams, even if it takes longer than you expected. As tutors, you must evaluate your effectiveness, by looking at the past to gauge your success. As this is the last message I will be writing this year, I wish you all SEASON’S GREETINGS, and health, happiness and continued success in 2007.

Many wonderful, hardworking, dedicated people serve on the Board and I have gained so much knowledge while working with them. Sitting on the Board of Directors offers invaluable opportunities to better understand how this organization functions, and find better ways to manage our resources. I applaud the Board members for the superb job that they do under the guidance of our excellent Executive Director, Darlene Brown. Because I have taken on responsibilities with another group, I am stepping down from the Board, but not out of the organization. I will continue to tutor, work on committees and help out with other activities as needed. Congratulations to our new Board members, who I am sure will do a first-rate job in the coming years.
