President’s Message Donna Adrian President

Most of us have heard the saying, “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try, again”. Writing the President’s Message has become a true challenge for me. I am used to writing, but I have not yet learned how to write for News and Views. The first time I wrote my message, I used difficult words and complex sentences. It took several re-writings, (try, try, again) before the message was ready for the newsletter. Frustration!! After I finished the first January-February Message, I realized that what I had written was not right. Frustration!! Back to re-writing, and try, try again. This is my fourth try at writing this message, and I realize that I have the same feelings of frustration that our students, at times, face, in trying to write. I am coming to understand how success requires all of us to try, try again. Learning is an on-going challenge, and I, like our students, am in the process of learning.

I’m pleased to announce our project proposal Community English Language and Literacy Support (CELLS) to Canadian Heritage has been approved and we are now well under way. Welcome to Kelly Howarth, who was hired as our project Communication Consultant, to work on the CELLS project until March 2006. It’s time for our Open House. TLE is always looking for tutors, students and volunteers! Please spread the word to anyone you know who may be interested. All members are invited to bring someone to our Open House to sign up as a volunteer or student!! Our Wear Orange Campaign has been going strong since November! A big thank you to all members, friends and family who have been so supportive in our efforts to raise money for our center! Let’s also remember to bring in our Canadian Tire money to fill our jar!

Once again, TLE has benefited this holiday season from the generosity of Domtar and our members. We’ve received over $500 worth of paper and generous donations from volunteers, with still more to come I hear! Thanks for giving our students the gift of reading!

Happy New Year from everyone at TLE!!

Karima Ashoori Darlene Brown Executive Director

Karima Ashoori will be dearly remembered by all of us at The Learning Exchange and Sir Wilfrid Laurier. Our thoughts are with her family. Some people come into our lives and quietly stay. Others stay for a while, leaving footprints in our hearts and we are never the same.
