Crown Jewel: A new history of the UT Health Science Center showcases the work of the University Archives A new history of the Health Science Center, entitled The Crown Jewel: The Story of the First 50 Years of The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, will go on sale in November 2009. Early copies will be available to the public at a special reception on Thursday, November 5, honoring the four presidents of the Health Science Center as featured guests. Will Sansom, the Health Science Center's Director of News and Information, is the author of this new historical work. Mr. Sansom recently expressed gratitude to the Briscoe Library's Special Collections staff for their help in identifying, gathering and facilitating the use of a wide variety of historical photos from the University Archives: "You ... were most helpful and made the task of finding pictures all the easier. You even volunteered to bring pictures to us in our building on a day when I was in a severe time crunch. I really appreciate all the library has done..." If you are looking for historical information about the Health Science Center or about the history of medicine in Bexar County and across South Texas, please contact our Special Collections department: Anne Comeaux, Assistant Director; Pennie Borchers, Special Collections Librarian; and Mellisa De Thorne, Library Assistant. You may be surprised at the treasures you can find! Center for Medical Humanities & Ethics to host 3rd annual community service learning conference in April 2010 The Center for Medical Humanities & Ethics at UT Health Science Center San Antonio is pleased to host the 3rd annual Community Service Learning (CSL) Conference, “CSL: Best Practices for Putting Ethics into Action” on April 8, 2010 at the San Antonio Long campus. The half-day conference is open to all Health Science Center students, faculty, and staff, as well as our community partners and our associates at the UT Medical Branch Galveston and UT Health Science Center Houston. There is no fee for the conference, but registration is required. A light breakfast and lunch will be served. Faculty from the nationally recognized narrative medicine program at Columbia University will speak about the role of reflection and narrative medicine in CSL programs. Ellen Beck, M.D., and Mike Seifert will speak in concurrent plenary sessions on best practices topics. Dr. Beck is a clinical professor of medicine on the faculty of the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, with experience founding student -run free clinics. Mike Seifert is a former priest with experience addressing the pressing social and health needs of Cameron Park residents in Brownsville, Texas, one of the poorest regions in the country, through partnerships with medical students and community organizations. The Columbia faculty will also provide a separate workshop on narrative medicine, beginning the afternoon of April 8.

Student Poster Presentation, 2nd Annual CSL Conference, April 2009

The student poster presentation is also part of this year’s program; students engaged in community service learning during the year will have an opportunity to present their projects in poster format. The student panel, which consists of top CSL projects selected by a committee, will also be on the agenda. The panel allows students to engage with the audience in a more in-depth presentation of their project. Community partners will have exhibit tables to promote their organizations as CSL sites. Night of the Arts, a fundraiser to support studentrun free clinics— a CSL project directed by Center faculty member Dr. Richard Usatine,— will take place on April 8 at the Long campus. School of Medicine funds 18 new computers for the Briscoe Library A cooperative effort between the Briscoe Library and the School of Medicine has expanded the number of desktop computers available to students, faculty, and staff by over 35%. The School of Medicine kindly provided funds to purchase 18 new Lenovo desktop PCs to help address the high demand for computers at peak times. In addition, the library added four PCs and expanded the availability of electrical power, network connections, and computer furniture to the fourth and fifth floors of the Briscoe Library building. Once the new PCs are fully deployed, the number of desktop computers available in the library will increase from 60 to 82. Once fully installed, the new The computers in the Information Commons on the entry level of the library are desktop units will bring to often fully occupied. Update: Annual journal and database review The August News from the Libraries contained information regarding the library’s annual journal and database review, including resources identified for possible non-renewal in 2010. Cancellation of a small number of resources is necessary to help offset the 8-10% price increases the libraries predict, as well as to make funds available for new resources requested by faculty and students. The following is a list of resources the libraries expect to cancel at the end of this calendar year. The Health Science Center will no longer have access to these databases starting January 1, 2010. We encourage your comments and suggestions as the Health Science Center’s faculty, students, and staff are the end users of these databases. Please send your comments to John Weed, Head of Collection Resources, [email protected].
