New Hope for ALS, Lou Gehrig's: Research Reveals Molecule Slowing Neuro-degeneration Although treatment for ALS, Lou Gehrig’s disease remains elusive, scientists have nevertheless identified mechanisms that are underlying the disease process that are considered to be useful in the clinical management of ALS, giving new hope for significantly slowing the disease process. Researchers have identified the following: 1) “Oxidative stress and oxidative damage that has a specific pattern has been found characteristic of a number of neurodegenerative disorders, including Lou Gehrig’s disease.” 2) “Oxidative stress has a pathogenic role where motor neurons are vulnerable, and increased oxidative stress is particularly characteristic of Lou Gehrig’s disease.” 3) “Mechanisms of toxicity" due to glutathione (GSH) depletion in the motor neuron has been consistently found by researchers.

What Does This Mean for ALS? This means that scientists have identified a “likely suspect.” Damage resulting from “oxidative stress” is part of the aging process, but it has been shown to have a more specific or “targeted” role in neuro-degenerative diseases such as Lou Gehrig’s disease. The field of free radical biology has exploded over the past 15 years, so that we know more about “oxidative stress” and the damage that is caused by “free radicals” produced by this “stress.” What is lesser known, however, is another body of knowledge with over 70,000 medical publications that investigated a small molecule called glutathione that protects the body from free radical damage. And indeed, researchers have found that people with ALS, Lou Gehrig’s disease have low levels of this protective substance.

A Key to Neurological Degeneration and ALS The picture that emerges from this research is that glutathione’s role is to protect us against the main villains that are at the root of aging and diseases like Lou Gehrig’s:

1) free radicals and oxidative stress, 2) an over or under-active immune response 3) toxins and pollutants, and 4) mutations in our DNA. The problem is that glutathione is rapidly consumed on a daily basis through normal metabolism, illness and even exercise. Without a good supply of glutathione, you have an inadequate defense system, and this can eventually lead to illness and to neurodegenerative diseases such as Lou Gehrig’s disease. There are people who have recovered from ALS, Lou Gehrig’s disease, and this may be the scientific basis for their recovery!

What Does This Research Add Up To? That People Who Are In Excellent Physical And Mental Health Have HIGH Levels Of Glutathione... ...whereas low levels of glutathione have been found as a marker for the major diseases of our time, including the neurodegenerative Alzheimers disease, Parkinson’s disease and Lou Gehrig’s disease. DR. JIMMY GUTMAN, FACEP, presents many of these findings in layman's terms, that are relevant to Lou Gehrig’s disease. Because it has not been medically known how to stimulate the body’s own production of glutathione safely and effectively without drugs, so as to promote and restore health. While anti-oxidants like vitamin C and E have become household words, it has not yet become common knowledge that our bodies already have anti-oxidant protection built in! Indeed, vitamins such as C and E cannot be effective without adequate amounts of glutathione. This was not known, until Dr. Gustavo Bounous, at McGill University in Montreal, discovered that when provided with the nutritional precursors for making glutathione, the body has the needed tools to fight off most threats, naturally. His discovery of raising glutathione through nutrition rather than through pharmaceuticals or pills, is considered by some doctors and researchers to be the biggest medical discovery since penicillin.

Why Is This A Such A Big Discovery? Because how to boosting glutathione levels has not been medically known. This is because it is not simply a matter of eating it in your food, or taking it in a PILL.

Why? Because it is destroyed by the digestion. Even when supplied intravenously, glutathione has not been found to be effective, as it deteriorates before it gets to where it is needed. It needs to be made by the cell itself, from 3 amino acids, glycine, glutamate and cysteine, and cysteine turns out to be the most important, but most difficult to get.

How To Improve Your Glutathione Levels? An “accidental finding” led Dr. Bounous to determine that it is best done through nutrition by providing the precursors for the body to make its own glutathione. Dr Bounous had worked for over 25 years for the CANADIAN MEDICAL RESEARCH COUNCIL. He was initially looking for a protein that would help people recover from surgery faster. What he discovered instead, was nutrition that significantly extended the life of his research animals and protected them from cancer and other diseases, with implications for degenerative conditions like Lou Gehrig’s. He found out what raises glutathione naturally, safely, and effectively, and this was clinically tested with AIDS, cancer and other conditions, with implications for other diseases like ALS, Lou Gehrig’s disease.
