This lecture will address the issues of weight, energy, body image, and substance abuse. While many females of all ages start abusing drugs (especially stimulants) to control their weight and increase their energy, they get trapped in the addiction cycle. Professor Lindsay will share information about a new program, Healthy Steps to Freedom, to help women stop the abuse and offer alternative ways to enhance body image and related concerns in a healthy manner.
Anne R. Lindsay, MS is the Healthy Steps to Freedom program author and a faculty at the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension. She is an Exercise Physiologist and a certified Health & Fitness Instructor with the American College of Sports Medicine. Since 1997, she has focused her research and teaching efforts on CourtOrdered Drug Treatment Programs and Women’s Correctional Facilities, specifically, women with addiction, weight, disordered eating, and body image issues.

Internet infidelity is fast becoming an issue in today’s society. This program is designed to distinguish the difference between Internet infidelity and Internet addiction and ways to identify and work with those caught in this addiction.
Katherine M. Hertlein, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Marriage and Family Therapy at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas. She recently served as
co-editor and co-author on Systemic Sex Therapy and co-author on A Clinician’s Guide to Systemic Sex Therapy. She presents nationally and internationally on sex, technology, and couples.

Robert Hunter, Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist licensed in the State of Nevada and is founder of Nevada Psychological Associates and Problem Gambling Center of Las Vegas. Dr. Hunter has received wide media and professional attention for his highly successful compulsive gambling program and is internationally recognized as an expert on problem gambling.

Pain and Addiction Recovery
Mel Pohl MD,
This program concentrates on chronic pain, addiction to prescription medications, and recovery. Dr. Pohl will explore the treatment of pain with opioids and alternative approaches, cognitive behavioral interventions, emotional aspect of chronic pain, and recovery issues. Mel Pohl, MD, FASAM is a Board Certified Family Practitioner. He is Vice President of Medical Affairs and the Medical Director of Las Vegas Recovery Center (LVRC). He is a nationally known public speaker, author of A Day without Pain (Central Recovery Press, 2008), which won a silver medal from Independent Publisher Book Award in May 2009. He is also a co-author of Pain Recovery: How to Find Balance and Reduce Suffering from Chronic Pain (Central Recovery Press, 2009)and Pain Recovery for Families: How to Find Balance When Someone Else’s Chronic Pain Becomes Your Problem Too (Central Recovery Press, 2010). 4:00 to 5:00 PM

9:00 to 10:00 AM Dual Diagnosis Lesley Dickson, MD This lecture addresses the issues of psychiatric illnesses and substance abuse disorders and other co-occurring disorders, diagnostic dilemmas, and treatment approaches and goals. Dr. Lesley Dickson is a psychiatrist who is ABPN Board certified in general and addiction psychiatry. After a twenty-year career in Academic Medicine and at the VA, she is now the Medical Director of two opiate substitution programs in Las Vegas. She is also the Immediate Past President of the Nevada Psychiatric Association and presently serves as its Secretary/Treasurer and State Legislative Representative. 10:00 to 11:00 AM Eating Disorders, Substance Abuse, Cortney S. Warren, Ph.D. and Western Culture There is a high prevalence of eating disorder pathology and substance abuse in the United States. Dr Warren will explore the influence of cultural factors on addiction, present recent research, and provide treatment considerations for these addiction concerns. Cortney S. Warren, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Drawing from clinical, social, and crosscultural psychology, Dr. Warren’s research explores the influence of socio-cultural factors on the development, maintenance, and perpetuation of eating disorder symptomatology. 11:00 to 11:30 AM

11:30 AM to 1:00 PM Sex Addiction Larry Ashley, Ed.S. This lecture will focus on sex addiction, including the demographics in Nevada. We will look at the impact of the industry on the addiction, how it affects the family, the cycle of sex addiction, intervention, screenings, treatment, and twelve-step groups in recovery. Larry Ashley, Ed.S., LCADC, LMSW, LPC CPGC has been involved in the substance abuse and trauma field for over thirty years as a college professor, researcher, and
therapist. He is currently Addictions Specialist and Undergraduate Coordinator in the Department of Counselor Education at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, Director of the Problem Gambling Treatment Program, and Clinical Assistant Professor in the Departments of Psychiatry and Internal Medicine, University of Nevada School of Medicine. 1:00 to 2:30 PM

2:30 to 4:00 PM Neurobiology of Addiction Laurel Pritchard, Ph.D. Explore the neural systems involved with addiction, anatomy, neurochemistry of the brain reward system; mechanisms by which abused drugs interact with these systems, and current theories of the neural bases of addiction, with special attention to the role of stress in the development and maintenance of addiction. Laurel Pritchard, PhD. is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas. Dr. Pritchard conducts research in the areas of behavioral neuroscience and psychopharmacology. Specifically, her research uses preclinical models of child neglect to investigate the effects of adverse early life experience on vulnerability to substance abuse. She also has ongoing interests in the neural bases of individual differences in reactivity to novel stimuli and stimulant drugs, and hormonal influences on behavioral responses to stimulants. 4:00 to 5:00 PM
