How Stress Can Affect Your Body By Dr. Joseph Young

C

an you tell when you are stressed out? How? There are many different types of stress. There is physical stress (sports, positioning while sitting or lifting), emotional stress (too much work to do at work or trouble with family members), or chemical stress (not eating healthy or not drinking enough water). It is a known fact that stress has an

adverse reaction on your body's health. It physically manifests itself as pain, anxiety, tight muscles, irritability and an overall feeling of tiredness or malaise. When we experience these types of symptoms, we generally turn to our primary doctor for some medication to help with the tight muscles or to help us relax. But what you probably did not know is that stress overloads you're your body and your nervous system which alters your body's ability to handle stress and its ability to heal. Your body is a self-regulating, self- adapting organism. Your brain and nervous system control and coordinate ALL functions in your body. Interference to your nervous system from subluxations or

misalignments of your spinal vertebrae has an effect on your body's ability to function normally. These subluxations and stress overload your nervous system to the point where your body may not function properly and it might start to break down. Loss of energy, feeling rundown, tight muscles and pain might be signs that your nervous system is not functioning well and you may be prone to getting sick. In theory, if we were to remove the spinal subluxations, then there will be minimal interference with your nervous system, and then your body would function optimally, and it would be able to handle stress better. Proposed Changes To Make College More Affordable

I

f Change Does Come, the Problem Still Remains the Same It is no secret that college is becoming much too expensive for families to afford. There are changes that may come to help, but don’t get too

excited just yet. The big question for most families still remains the same: How will we comfortably afford the out of pocket portion that will still be our responsibility? No matter what the changes, the out of pocket

cost to most families is still a number they are not prepared to deal with efficiently. On September 17th the House passed the Student Loan and Fiscal Responsibility Act (SAFRA). The legislation

would shift federal student lending entirely into the hands of the government -currently private banks disburse about 75 percent of such loans. Even with these changes, the fact remains that loans are still going to be a big part of a family’s solution to college costs. No matter how low the interest rate may be, and regardless of the lender, there are still

By Chuck Drawbaugh Under SAFRA, the Pell grant will increase from $5,550 in 2010 to $6,900 by 2019. If there is an increase to the Federal Pell Grant program, all families must be aware that only families showing the greatest need qualify for the Federal Pell Grant. Remember, the family’s definition of need is far different than the Department of Education’s definition of need. The SAFRA bill will create a more simple FAFSA form. If the financial aid forms are simplified, that doesn’t mean everyone gets more financial assistance; it simply means that completing the required forms may be less complicated and time consuming. That might translate to more people applying for aid because some people who gave up and couldn’t figure out the forms before may now fill out a new, shorter and easier form. In summary, the act will be voted on in the Senate on Oct. 15. In the media the changes all sound great, but don’t assume the benefits will benefit your family. Chuck Drawbaugh, a leading college funding expert and consumer advocate, will be presenting a College Funding Workshop for families with current high school students at the YMYWHA, 1 Pike Ave. in Wayne on Tuesday, October 20, 2007 at 6:30pm. He will be discussing how to send your child to college in this difficult economy without going broke and how to increase your eligibility for aid. Although admission is free reservations are recommended. Please call (732) 224-1496 to make a reservation.

What Do We Know About the Stock Market?

E

ven through recessions and depressions, wars and in peace time, economic expansions and economic regressions, periods of inflation, stagflation and deflation, high unemployment and the boom times where virtually everyone who wants a job has one, the stock market, over the long-term, has been the greatest performing asset class best able to overcome the effects during virtually all economic cycles, when compared to the alternatives available to the general public. Markets go up, markets go down and in the past, financial planners, stock brokers and financial advisors employed a diversified strategy of stocks, bonds and out of

the market investments and strategies amongst these asset classes, to protect client portfolios from the risk of the equity exposure. Each planner understood that the stock market was the best place for long-term money even when instituting a systematic withdrawal program. To protect themselves from potential litigation and the client from "losing it all" if the market tanked, the advisor emphasized asset allocation, diversification and a long-term horizon to be safe and prudent. Implementing these strategies or variations on a theme, represented the majority of tools available to the financial advising community. NOT ANY MORE! I refer to that as Old Technology. No longer does anyone need to lose sleep at night when their portfolio is invested in equities due to the availability of a Variable Annuity and a Living Benefit Rider. Why – you may ask? Because this retirement planning tool is the only stock market based investment that has the ability to insure your contributions, guaranteeing*

to return to your designated beneficiary at least your initial invested amount minus withdrawals (if any) when you die, or before death, potentially an even greater figure as an income stream to you and your spouse for the rest of your lives! These guarantees* will be enhanced by positive stock market based portfolio performance yet cannot be minimized if the portfolio is compromised by negative market performance! I refer to this as New Technology! Though diversification is still recommended, it is my strong opinion that a greater percentage of your portfolio should be allocated to the strongest asset class for the long haul, equities, without fear of a stock market crash or severe prolonged decline in stock prices affecting your income base and the systematic withdrawals necessary to support yourself and your spouse for the rest of your lives. Further, I believe that a Variable Annuity combined with a Living Benefit Rider, to be the greatest innovation in the investment industry since

the invention of the mutual fund in 1924! Let me ask you, are you aware of any other investment alternatives that can offer even a fraction of the peace of mind that this concept employs and enjoys? I can’t either, leading me to one irrefutable conclusion. This concept needs to be incorporated into everyone’s personal retirement plan to insure the retirement income necessary for both husbands and wives to live comfortably for the rest of their lives! Unfortunately however, ever since I received my license to sell annuities in 1981, people have stated to me that annuities are bad or they heard that they were very expensive or they prevent you from getting your money back because it belongs to the insurance company without recourse once you give it to them. I’ve heard complaints and comments such as, “you can do better with index funds” or “they’re not insured and if the insurance company fails you’ll lose everything.” I’ve even heard an excuse for not investigating annuities as a retirement alternative

Page 5, Zone 1 By Mark Charnet

because, “the people who sell annuities make a lot of money and therefore you’re income will suffer if you get one of those!” Important that you know, none of the comments above are true. I’ve come to realize in my 28 years in this business, that the majority of the population’s perception of annuities, at first, is bad, yet, when I challenge these people who espouse their negativity; they have incorrect facts or no facts at all in which to base their opinions. After an indepth conversation with me, in virtually every case these people become converts and even evangelical about the benefits that now belong to

them as owners of the various kinds of annuities best suited for their needs. Annuities have gotten an undeserved bad rap and as a 28 year veteran in the sales and marketing of annuities and a Certified Annuity Specialist by the Institute of Business and Finance in 2006; I must admit that there are some pretty awful products that have been approved by the NJ Department of Insurance to be sold to the consumers in our State. Space does not allow me the opportunity to define “awful” in this column, but, in this industry like all others, there are some inferior products sold by peocontinues on page 14

Jackets Required

I

f you only buy one thing this season to add to your wardrobe, make it a great jacket. It's the starting point for fall fashion and the foundation for every major statement. But don't think you can get away with wearing just any old thing. The jackets this year are getting personal; they've got loads of individual style. In other words, find one that you love and you'll end up getting your money's worth for years to come. The good news is that there are plenty of different styles of jackets to choose from, and there are all kinds of ways to wear them. Find that perfect jacket, and mix and match with basics you already have in your closet. However, remember, it's more "mismatching" that usually makes a modern wardrobe more interesting. Here's a quick checklist of what to shop for this fall:

Your Local and Trusted Jeweler for over 23 years!

• The boyfriend jacket. It's got the strong shoulders and the longer length. It's the perfect jacket to toss over slim trousers or skinny jeans, but some of these jackets can overwhelm you. Try them on and make sure they give you a smooth silhouette. Don't get too carried away with the "slouchy" look -a la the Olsen twins, who look adorable in anything they wear even if it's two sizes too big. • The cropped jacket. There are lots of variations to this style. You can find these shorter jackets in roomy, swingy Aline cuts or very boxy and buttoned up. Three-quarter sleeves are perfect with the season's popular longer gloves. This is

definitely a jacket style that you have to try on to see if it flatters your body shape. Most of us actually look better in jackets that have a little more length and therefore more coverage, if you know what I mean. In other words, if you've got a big butt, you'll want to skip this one. • The tweed jacket. Miss Marple? No way. The new tweeds are more "sexy secretary" than frumpy. Try layering a shorter tweed jacket over a longer tunic with jeans for a great weekend look. And yes, these are always great for the office. Instead of wearing them with trousers, pair a menswear tweed with a short shift dress.

The cropped jacket makes a major statement for fall. Pictured is Dana Buchman's short black and gold boucle jacket from Kohl's. Photo courtesy of Kohl's.

• The military jacket. Now, this one makes a statement. Balmain was a big promoter of this look (Michael Jackson actually was a big fan of their jackets), and many fashion designers have incorporated one or two styles into their fall collections. This style with all its fanfare may not be for the faint of fashion heart, but let the rock star roll in you. Go with it when you want to make a big "over the top" impression. • The motorcycle jacket. Closely akin to the military style, the leather biker jackets this fall are also revving up with statement-making power. The more zippers and hardware the better! Jeans, of course, are the standard "go-with" for this jacket, but the newest way to

wear the retro classic is over a chiffon sheath dress. Funky! • The knit topper. From knit blazers to cardigan coats to boucle jersey cocoon wraps, the soft topper is a great contrast to slick leather and menswear tailoring. And of course, we know knits are always the most comfortable thing we can wear. anete Landscape and Garden Center is pleased to announce their new line of custom outdoor “fire-features”. A fire-feature is a custom masonry unit that is constructed over a metal frame, featuring a propane fed firebowl. Basically the unit looks like a contemporary version of an old-fashioned campfire, but it operates with the simplicity of a BBQ grill. What better way to extend your season outdoors than sitting next to a warm campfire roasting marshmallows or sharing a glass of wine on the patio next to the glow of natural firelight. Since each unit is custom made, there is no limitation to size or shape. In fact, units can be incorporated into a grand outdoor kitchen or be constructed small enough that it can be moved around on your patio. Many units will NOT require a permit as they operate within the safe parameters of a BBQ grill. Larger units maybe plumbed to run off a home-fed gas line, but will more than likely require permits and inspections. We put the power of design in the client’s hands. Every unit can be veneered with over fifty types Cultured Stone and topped with anything from granite to tile: With the way these custom units are constructed, the options are virtually unlimited. No matter what kind of home you live in Canete Landscape’s team of Landscape Designers can help you create the ultimate “fire-feature” to compliment your lifestyle. encased and protected by the spinal column, a vertical set of 24 bones called vertebrae. At the sides of the spine between each vertebrae are holes (foramen). The spinal nerves that

The nerve itself occupies only a very small portion of this space. Biomechanics... As we walk, move, twist and bend the joints of the spine allow normal spinal motion to occur. Spinal joints sometimes lose their correct movement patterns as a result of trauma, postural faults or repetitive stress that cause the spine to become misaligned. When a mechanical structure is not aligned correctly, normal function is not possible. These changes in spinal alignment and joint motion can alter the shape of the foramen through which the spinal nerves pass. This can cause an increase in pressure to the contents of the foramen, either directly (the so-called "pinch"), or more commonly by irritating the contents, producing inflammation. Source of the Pain... Except in cases of severe trauma or advanced spinal degen-

erative change, it is extremely rare that the nerves passing through the foramen become "pinched" to the extent the compression itself is pain-producing. Pain is almost always the result of: • abnormal mechanical stress on spinal discs • irritated joint capsules • increased mechanical stress on ligaments • muscle irritation or spasm • chemical irritation of the spinal nerves caused by inflammation within the altered foramen. Small increases in pressure on spinal nerves, though not usually pain-producing, have been shown to adversely effect nerve function. This may be the real danger of "pinched nerves", for the result is a gradual, silent deterioration in the ability of the brain and central nervous system to keep every part of your body working optimally. Treatment... C l e a r l y, "pinched nerves", whether themselves the source of pain or not, can have serious health consequences. Chiropractics are highly trained and skilled at diagnosing spinal conditions that can be contributing to "pinched nerves". By helping to restore correct spinal alignment and joint function, chiropractic care can allow the nervous system to communicate normally, relieving pain and enabling the body to regain its health. Drs. Glenn and Christine Foss are the owners of Advance Sports Medicine and Physical Therapy Center in Riverdale. for him. It should not obstruct your pet's vision, or constrict movement, hearing, or ability to breathe or bark. Also, check for small, dangling, or easily chewedoff pieces on the costume that your pet could choke on or may cause harm to them such as elastic, rubber bands, or buttons. When buying a Halloween costume for your pet it’s very important to select the size that matches your pet. Do not leave your pets outside on Halloween. Instead, keep your pets safely inside, away from trickor-treaters and other Halloween activities. Your pets will be less frightened and will not feel threatened by noisy, costumed children, plus these ghouls and goblins can scare pets causing them to escape from the yard. It is a good idea to keep your outdoor cat inside several days before and after Halloween. Black cats in particular may be at risk from children's pranks. It’s best not to bring the family dog along trick-or-

treating. Although it is nice for them to get out and trickor-treat with the family, dogs may become difficult to handle during the noise and confusion of the festivities. Some children you meet may be afraid of dogs, especially in the dark. Also, take your dog on his walk before the Halloween festivities begin. This will help keep your dog safe and calm. Even the most social dogs and cats should be kept in a separate room, away from the front door, during trick-or-treat visiting hours. Too many strangers can be overwhelming for a dog or cat and some children may be afraid of animals. Also, you open the door many times during the evening for trick-or-treaters, so be very careful your dog or cat does not dart outside. Make sure your cat or dog wears a current animal license tag or ID tag on its collar or is micro chipped. If, for any reason, a pet does escape or become lost, you increase the chances that your pet will be returned to

you if he is wearing a collar with an ID tag. Don't share any candy with pets, especially chocolate. Tell your children not to share their candy with the family pet and make sure that candy is put out of reach after children return from their trick-or-treating adventures. Candy can be harmful and Chocolate is toxic for animals causing vomiting, restlessness, heart disturbances, and even death. If you suspect your pet has eaten chocolate or other candy that causes discomfort, consult your veterinarian immediately. Throw your candy wrappers away too. Wrappers and lollipop sticks can be dangerous if your pet swallows them. Keep your pet away from potentially hazardous decorations. Flames from jack-o-lanterns and candles could singe or burn your pet. Keep small Halloween decorations away from your pet, since they could cause choking. Use these tips to have a

festive and safe Halloween. For more information and tips about holiday safety for pets, call or visit your family veterinarian. Remember, your veterinarian is your very best source for advice on keeping your pet safe, healthy, and happy! Dr. Matthew Krupnick is the owner of the Pequannock Animal Hospital. The first movie is titled, "The Climb,” a very powerful and explosive film by Billy Graham. Believers and nonbelievers will enjoy this movie and be moved by the message of God. It is a story of two solo rock climbers (Ned Vaughn and Jason George), who are brought together when they perform a daring rescue. The man they save is the son of retail mogul (Dabney Coleman) who rewards them with a trip to their dream climb. The two highly esteemed climbers approach the sport very differently. One is a safety-conscious plodder driven by the beauty of creation. His goal is to reach the summit, and take whatever precautions necessary. The other is a flamboyant self-promoter bent by anger. He's a risk taker and will reach his dream at any cost. A clash of pride, styles, and character put both of their lives on the line. Wayne Presbyterian Church is locat-

Pumpkin and Coconut Soup Recipe Thick, Spicy Fall Dish For Lunch of Dinner Recipe for Pumpkin and Coconut Soup Serves: 4.

T

his cheerful orange soup is made from seasonal pumpkin, coconut milk and five different spices for an exotic twist to an old favorite. Perfect on a cold fall day. This colorful soup is made from pumpkin, which comes into season in the fall (think Halloween lanterns) and is a good option for a filling lunch or light dinner on a cold day. Pumpkin has a slightly sweet flavor, which means that although it is thought of as a vegetable, it is used in both sweet and savory dishes. It also combines well

with spices, such as in this recipe that gives an Asian twist to an old favorite. Suitable for vegetarians. This recipe calls for tamarind pulp. Tamarind is a tree native to Africa but is also grown widely in Asia and Latin America. The pulp and seeds of the tree’s fruit are dried and frequently used in cooking, particularly in India, to give the dishes a subtle sour flavor. Tamarind should be available in Indian or Asian supermarkets, but if necessary can be replaced with a good squeeze of fresh lemon juice.

Preparation time: 15 minutes. Cooking time: 20 minutes. Ingredients: • 2 tablespoons sunflower oil • 1 medium onion, chopped • 4 cloves of garlic, minced • 1 inch / 2.5 cm piece of root ginger, peeled and finely chopped • 2 red chilies, washed, deseeded and finely chopped • 1 level teaspoon of ground coriander • 1 level teaspoon of ground cumin • ½ level teaspoon of ground cardamom • ½ level teaspoon of ground cinnamon • 1 lb 10 oz / 750 g pumpkin, peeled, deseeded and roughly chopped • ½ pint / 150 ml of

thick coconut milk • 1 ½ pints / 750 ml vegetable stock • ½ tablespoon tamarind pulp • Salt and freshly ground pepper • 4 tablespoons of natural yoghurt to garnish • Chopped fresh coriander to garnish (optional) Preparation:

5. Pour the soup into four bowls, garnish each portion with a tablespoon of yoghurt and sprinkle with the chopped coriander (if using). Serve with slices of fresh crusty bread. Store any leftovers in the fridge for up to three days and reheat for a healthy instant meal.

1. Over a low flame, heat the oil in a large, heavy-bottomed saucepan with a lid. Add the onion, garlic, ginger, chilies and spices. Cook until the onion is soft and the spices fragrant, about 10 minutes. Stir regularly so that the spices do not burn. 2. Add the pumpkin, coconut milk, vegetable stock and tamarind pulp and bring slowly to the boil. Put the lid on the saucepan and simmer until the pumpkin is

11 Smart Ways to Prepare Your Home for a Cold Winter

t’s October! The new Farmers’ Almanac is out – this means winter can’t be far behind! With the “numbingly cold” forecast from the Almanac and the high price of fuel, we all should be

taking some steps to improve our homes’ efficiencies. Here are eleven easy ways to prepare your home for a cold winter ahead: 1) Seal Windows and Doors! Windows and

doors are the biggest losers when it comes to heat loss, especially if they’re older. While replacing old windows with new double-paned windows is a great idea, it may not be in the budget. Instead try a

caulking gun and caulk. If you caulk completely around the outer window frame and maybe even the outside of the window, you may be pleasantly surprised at how well it keeps the hot air in and

“Transforming Lives By Transformimg Living Spaces... It’s What We Do”

2) Furnace/Chimney Check Up. Now is the time to have the filter on your furnace changed as well as a cleaning or check up. This will allow your furnace to run more efficiently. And if you’re heating with a stove or fireplace, be sure to have your chimney cleaned and checked.

Innovative, Full Service Residential Remodeling, Crafting Fabulous Kitchens, Additions, Bathrooms & Master Suites

3) Purchase a programmable thermostat. Then learn how to program it! If you’re smart about programming it and turning down the heat during the day or at night, you may be able to cut your heating costs by 20%.

the cool air out. Another option is rope caulk – which requires no caulk gun, and it is easily removed when the warm weather returns. It’s even reusable for next year. Check with your local hardware store for additional information.

5) Payment Plans. Check with your utility company to see if there are any special plans that will help you budget your winter heating costs a little more efficiently. Some plans allow you to spread your payments out over a 12-month period. 6) Look for ways to cut costs. This winter may be tough on many of us. day, open drapes and blinds to allow sunlight to help warm the house, and then close at night to hold the heat in. 10) Do not heat unused rooms. Close the door to the unused

room and shut off the radiator valve or close the vent. 11) Save on hot water. Lower the thermostat on the hot water heater to 120 degrees or below. Install a programma-

ble timer so water is only being heated during times of the day when it is typically used, such as mornings or evenings. Insulate the hot water heater with a blanket to help water stay hot longer.

The “Fall Garden”

M

ost of us know that fall is a great time for planting. However, gardening may be sliding down your list of priorities this time of year because of back-toschool-craziness or just because it’s football season. But remember, with just a little bit of attention, you can keep your home looking great. There are many reasons fall planting can be very satisfying, probably the best reason being all the sales going on at your local garden center and nursery! There are reasons fall is so great for planting. When anything is planted, the roots of the plant loosen up, wriggle out of their confinement,

and search for water and nutrients. If it is spring, the plant goes right into its growing season and must face the heat and dryness of summer while working to grow. This takes a lot of energy. If the tree is planted in fall, the plant has time to adjust to its surroundings before going dormant for the winter. If you do plant anything now, it’s best not to fertilize. You don’t want the plant to put any energy into putting out new growth right now. One exception to that rule is for bulbs. Now is the time to plant spring flowering bulbs such as daffodils, tulips, allium and crocus. If you’ve never planted these before, continues on next page

you’re missing out on a special aspect of gardening. It’s as if you’ve bought yourself a little present, wrapped it up, and put it away for yourself until spring. When planting the bulbs, add a little bone meal or organic fertilizer into the hole, which is generally two or three times the diameter of the bulb itself. A great number of bulbs are deer resistant as well, which is a huge bonus to any northern New Jersey home owner. For a quick and easy way to brighten up the front of your house or patio,

remove any dead or terrible looking annuals and cut back the perennials that look the worst. You can fill in the open spots with fresh mums or ornamental cabbage to brighten the area. There are also beautiful fall flowering perennials available right now that may be just the thing to keep your garden up to date and beautiful. Of course, a fresh layer of mulch always makes everything look clean and new, as well as to help protect plants from dehydration. At this time of year, many container gardens

need help as well. For a quick fix, remove the worst annual or two, and pop in a small mum or cabbage. You may also consider perennials with good looking foliage, such as Sedums, Heuchera or Ornamental Grasses, or even dwarf evergreen shrubs. Over the winter move these pots to a protected area before freezing nighttime temperatures occur. If you are feeling a little un-motivated with your lawn or garden, now would be a good time to visit your local garden center and ask for some help and inspiration for next year. Besides the bargain plants available right now, many garden centers have employees who will gladly help with basic design and plant selection. Bring in a sketch or photo of the area you want to work on. It helps to go during off seasons and non-busy hours, such as during the week, and to call ahead to make sure someone will have the time to work with you. Some garden centers offer reasonable consultation services at your home as well, though for larger jobs, you may want to hire a landscape architect or landscaping service. So remember, a little bit of time in the garden now can be tremendously satisfying and rewarding. This time of year, a little bit of effort goes a long way to making your home look fantastic.

Beach Bum Tanning Supports Vitamin DBreast Cancer Research

each Bum Tanning is taking part in a North American effort to fund the continuation of research which now shows that vitamin D deficiency is strongly linked to a significantly elevated risk of breast cancer. The campaign — called D-Feat Breast Cancer — is being supported by patrons of the professional indoor tanning community across North America. Indoor tanners are being asked to donate $1 to $5 to support vitamin D-breast cancer research. “It’s not a situation where we want to start from ground zero to investigate whether or not there is a connection between vitamin D and lower breast cancer rates. We want to increase awareness of the solid research that’s already been done, and fund it to its conclusion,” says Campaign Chairman Joseph Levy. “Because the main source of vitamin D is sunlight, and because sunshine is free, there haven't been many sources of funding for this kind of work. Because the

potential impact is so profound, we are stepping up." The research on vitamin D and breast cancer prevention to date is impressive: • A 2006 paper published in Anticancer Research established that women with higher vitamin D levels are 50-70 percent less likely to develop breast cancer. • A 2007 study in the American Journal of Epidemiology reported that women with high sun exposure levels – the most natural and abundant source of vitamin D – had half the risk of developing advanced breast cancer. • A 2007 paper in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed that women with high vitamin D levels have up to a 77 percent reduction in overall cancer risk – including breast cancer. • A 2002 paper in Occupational and Environmental Medicine established that women who received regular sun exposure were less likely to die from breast cancer.

Those specific studies stand out in their category and are on top of hundreds of papers that now establish the role vitamin D plays in cell growth regulation in the body – research that solidifies the mechanism by which vitamin D would prevent or slow the growth of dozens of forms of cancer in the body. So why vitamin D and breast cancer research? Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in North American women today. In 2009 there will be 200,000 new breast cancer cases discovered in the United States and Canada, and 45,000 women will die from this disease – about 45 times more than will die from nonmelanoma skin cancer. And that too is a comparison that is coming to light. A University of Oslo research team showed this year that 10 times as many cancers are prevented by the vitamin D generated from regular sun exposure than are caused by overexposure to

the sun. And those figures likely are underestimated. The authors did not differentiate non-burning from burning levels of sun exposure – a confounding mistake. Adjusted for this error, the benefit-to-risk ration of regular non-burning UV exposure could be much greater. Promoting a Healthy Lifestyle Indoor tanning’s roots in Europe in the 1970s were therapeutic. People visited solaria to combat seasonal depression and elevate vitamin D levels. The cosmetic tan was simply a side effect of what was originally conceived as a therapeutic exercise. And while North American indoor tanning historically has been cosmetic, the therapeutic underpinnings exist, whether facilities promote them or not. • Indoor tanners have 90 percent higher vitamin D blood levels and higher bone mineral density as compared with non-tanners, according to a 2004 study published in

the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. “The public deserves fully funded vitamin D research, deserves to hear about the profound importance of funding this work to its conclusion, and we are doing our part," said Jennifer Neumayer, owner of Beach Bum Tanning in Wayne, NJ.

Screenings Crucial Fund Vitamin D-Breast Cancer Research In Breast Cancer R Detection

B

reast cancer screening means checking a woman's breasts for cancer before there are signs or symptoms of the disease. Three main tests are used to screen the breasts for cancer. Talk to your doctor about which tests are right for you, and when you should have them. • Mammogram: The most effective means to detecting breast cancer, a mammogram is an X-ray of the breast. Mammograms can detect breast cancer early, when it is easier to treat and before it is big enough to feel or cause symptoms. Having regular mammograms can lower the risk of dying from breast cancer. If you are age 40 years or older, be sure to have a screening mammogram every one to two years. • Clinical breast exam: A clinical breast exam is an examination by a doctor or nurse, who uses his or her hands to feel for lumps or

other changes. • Breast self-exam: A breast self-exam is when you check your own breasts for lumps, changes in size or shape of the breast, or any other changes in the breasts or underarm (armpit). Having a clinical breast exam or a breast self-exam does not decrease risk of dying from breast cancer. If you choose to have clinical breast exams and to perform breast self-exams, be sure you also get regular mammograms. Breast cancer screenings are typically available at clinics, the local hospital or a doctor's office. If you want to be screened for breast cancer, call your doctor's office. They can help you schedule an appointment. Most health insurance companies pay for the cost of breast cancer screening tests. For more information on cancer prevention and control, visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Web site at www.cdc.gov/cancer.

esearch now links vitamin D deficiency with a significantly elevated risk of breast cancer. So why isn't there public outcry to continue funding this breakthrough science? Vitamin D is made naturally when skin is exposed to UVB in sunlight. Because sunshine is free, there's no marketing department out there calling for this research to be continued. Because the stakes are so high - 200,000 women will be told they have breast cancer in North America this year, and 45,000 will die - I am proud to be supporting "D-Feat Breast

Cancer" - a North American campaign to fund the continuation of this important research. Cornerstone Chiropractic detect and correct these subluxations. Most people think they're in good health as long as they are not in pain, but in reality, pain is but one sign that the body is not at optimal health. What many people don't realize is that only 10 percent of the human central nervous system communicates pain. That's why it is important to look at every aspect of the nervous system, not just a small portion of it. One of the most advanced and accurate ways of monitoring subluxations is with the use of a computerized Insight "Subluxation Station." With the Insight, we will perform two noninvasive, painless tests to measure the effects of subluxations. First, a Thermal Scan is performed to measure heat along the spine. A second scan is performed using Surface EMG (electromyography) to measure the muscle tone around your spine. The scans produce three different reports that compare your functional measurements to normal values. Areas that are functioning normally show up as white

continued from front page

bars. Areas that demonstrate mild, moderate and severe disturbances print as green, blue and red bars. We use the Insight Subluxation Station, which is the latest technology, along with traditional X-ray to detect spinal nerve interference and spinal stress. Together, these technologies can detect health problems even before symptoms arise. The Insight technology analyzes the function of the spine and central nervous system, which can not be seen on X-ray. The Insight system has four different and distinct tests that safely and accurately document each patient's level of nerve stress. The test will indicate where the brain and spinal nerves have lost ability to communicate effectively to the organ systems, muscles and spinal joints. This is charted throughout the course of care so each patient can not only feel but see their progress. X-rays may also be used to determine whether the patient has misaligned joints, arthritic changes, disc degeneration or other conditions. With that, we

can monitor and provide their patients with the information they need to make the best decisions for their health. The average person may not understand that the stress placed on the nervous system by misalignment in the spine can affect the entire body. Chiropractic care does more than just alleviate pain; it opens a patient's nerve pathways so the body functions properly and can take better care of itself. We realize that it's almost impossible to avoid all of the stresses of life, but our goal is to determine the cause of your body's imbalance, so you can take steps to improve it, through chiropractic care, and a holistic approach that stresses exercise, diet and changes in daily habits. Dr. Young and his staff look forward to seeing local residents at his office at 7 Newark Pompton Tpk., in Riverdale. Please call our office for your free consultation and spinal scan at 973-831-1100 and visit our website at www.corner stonespine.com.

Mets/Yankees Trivia Who Managed Both the Mets and the Yankees? There have been four former players who managed both the Mets and the Yankees. The first three are givens, while the fourth may not be so well known, especially from the Yankees’ side. CASEY STENGEL Nicknamed “The Old Perfessor” for his wit and humor, Casey Stengel (18901975) was an outfielder for the Brooklyn Dodgers, Pittsburgh Pirates, Philadelphia Phillies, New York Giants, and Boston Braves in a career that began in 1912 and ended in 1925. His first managing job was with Brooklyn from19341936, and then the Boston Braves from 1938-1943. He

The special will be running through October in support of National Breast Cancer awareness month and will be donating a portion of the proceeds from this special to Breast Cancer research. There is no appointment necessary, stop in at your convenience. Good maintenance can keep your vehicle on the road for years to come and keep you safer on the road. Many drivers think maintenance just involves oil changes, but it is a fact that most people do change their oil as recommended but do not rotate their tires as frequently as they should. That is a BIG mistake. Proper rotation can add as much as 10,000 miles to the life of a set of tires. Let Royal take care of your tires and during winter and they will take care of you. Remember your winter tires are not designed just for snow, but also to increase traction in cold winter conditions. It is recommended that you make the switch to

Series, as the Pittsburgh Pirates took the championship that year. Stengel took an “involuntary retirement” from the Yankees, as they felt that at age 70 he was too old to manage. However, he ended his retirement in 1962 when he took over the reigns of the fledgling New York Mets in an expansion of the National League. The incompetence of the early Mets, which were for the most part made up of players that were released by other teams, led Stengel to expand his use of “Stengelese,” his own language for which he was famous. After yet another frustrating loss, Stengel was quoted as saying, “Can’t anybody play this here game?” This expression was changed

around a bit by author Jimmy Breslin, as he entitled his book about the first-year Mets “Can’t Anybody Here Play This Game?” Casey Stengel retired on August 30, 1965, after he took

a fall at Shea Stadium and broke his hip. As one of the most colorful and beloved baseball personalities ever to walk on the playing field, he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1966. His uni-

form number, 37, has been honorably retired by both the Mets and the Yankees, with that number only being issued once by the Mets. Next issue – Yogi Berra.

was not very successful with these teams, and after managing at the minor league level, Stengel became manager for the Yankees in 1949. He then experienced success like never before, as the Yanks won record numbers of championships under his leadership. The Yankees won ten American League pennants under Casey, 1949-1953, 1955-1958, and 1960. During that time, Stengel became the only manager to win five consecutive World Series championships (1949-1953), and added two more in 1956 and 1958. expanding its Kosher Meals on Wheels program in Wayne and Pompton Lakes. The Meals on Wheels Program provides hot nutritious kosher meals to people age 60 and over, or those younger who have a disability and who are unable to cook or shop. Volunteer drivers bring needed meals, offer a smile, a greeting and a personal contact to the elderly, many of whom seldom get out. Drivers are needed to deliver meals two times a month. Presently, we are accepting referrals for people who would like to receive meals. Please call Ann Pogolowitz or Paul Klein at (973) 595-0111 to volunteer, to request Kosher Meals on Wheels, or for additional information. --•Star of Hope Ministries, Inc. located at 34 Broadway in Paterson works in partnership with pastors and community leaders of Greater Paterson by providing tools and resources to strengthen their capacities to address pain and poverty in the truth and power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. “The Truth About Nose Surgery”

Before

After Nose Surgery by Dr. Kassir

Are you embarrassed by the appearance of your nose? Are you thinking about changing the shape of your nose or having something done to improve your breathing? If so, you're not alone. Each year, approximately 150,000 Americans of all ages have "nose jobs". Besides making you feel better about your appearance, nose surgery can alleviate or cure headaches and breathing problems, and correct deformities from birth or injury. Many people who have had nose surgery are amazed by the difference it makes in their self-esteem, a factor that usually gives them an edge professionally and personally. These people hope to achieve improved breathing, a more pleasing appearance, or both. That's why it's important to be an informed consumer when it comes to nose surgery.

Computer Imaging Gives A Preview Fortunately, today's hightech innovations have made Before

Dear Dr. Kassir, Words can not express how grateful I am! I love my new nose! - M.M.

nose surgery more predictable. The doctor can use computerimaging equipment to project your face on screen and show how you might look after nose surgery (as well as other facial procedures you might be having). This allows you to communicate to your doctor what changes you would like.

the nose has been injured, insurance may cover part or all of the surgery.

Q. How much does it cost? R. The surgical fee is from $2,500 to $6,000, depending on the problem being corrected. Charges for the anesthesiologist and the facility are additional.

Common Questions Q. How much pain is involved? R. Pain isn't the issue it once was. Few patients report much, if any, discomfort, because very little packing is used. Q. What's the recovery time? R. You will have a splint and bandage on your nose for several days, so it's usually about a week before patients return to work or start socializing again. By that time, the swelling has gone down. Some people cover up their bruises with make up. Q. Does insurance pay? R. If there's a breathing problem that's being corrected or if

Choosing A Surgeon It's important to choose a doctor who is a specialist in the nasal airway as well as nasal aesthetics. As a board certified facial plastic surgeon who is also board certified in otolaryngology, Dr. Kassir does facial work exclusively. What this means for the patient is that the doctor has extensive experience in facial procedures such as nasal surgery; thus, he understands not only aesthetics (how to make the nose look attractive) but also function. "This is very important to people who are involved in sports and exercise," says Dr. Kassir. "They want to breathe well and look good".

Are You A Candidate for Nose Surgery? Take this quick test—look in a mirror and answer these questions. __Does your nose appear too large or too small for you? __Do you notice a dent or bump on the nasal bridge, when viewed from the front? __Does your nose appear too wide when viewed from the front? __Does the tip of your nose droop or plunge up? __Is the tip of your nose thickened or enlarged? __Are your nostrils excessively flared? __Is your nose off-center or crooked? __Has a prior injury made your nose out of proportion to your other facial features? __Do you have any problemswith: 1) Breathing through your nose 2) Chronic Nose or Sinus complaints? If your answer was YES, even just for one of these questions, you may be a candidate for a “new nose.” Call our office at 973-6929300 to schedule your personal consultation with Dr. Kassir.
