Dear Enterprise, I am very concerned about the recent restrictions the City Council placed on the services that can be offered by local churches to the homeless in our community. I feel that the city council should not have the power to dictate what services a church can or cannot offer. In my mind, this seriously violates the principle of separation of church and state. Furthermore, the arbitrary limits placed by the city council don’t allow the volunteers running the program to exercise judgment and run things in a humane and effective way. For example, the city limited the number of free lunches that can be handed out in any given day to 25, unless person #26 is a child. What if person #26 is a 65 year old woman with pneumonia? I think the city council should seriously reconsider its approach to dealing with this problem. I understand that the neighbors have legitimate complaints, but restricting church activities is not the solution. Sincerely, Nathan Strickland
