NARCAN 1. Name & class of drug – generic and trade name. GENERIC NAME: Naloxone Hydrochloride BRAND NAME: Narcan CLASSIFICATION: CNS agent, narcotic (opiate) antagonist 2. Dose range and routes for adult & geriatric client. PREPARATIONS: IV – (0.02, 0.4, 1) mg/ml DOSING: Opiate Overdose – 0.4-2 mg, may be repeated q2-3 min up to 10mg if necessary Post Op Opiate depression – 0.1 – 0.2 mg, may be repeated q2-3 min for up to 3 doses if necessary 3. Purpose prescribed. Underline reason your client is prescribed drug. THERAPEUTIC EFFECTS: reverses the effects of opiates, including resp depression, sedation and hypotension USES: narcotic overdosage, complete or partial reversal of narcotic depression including resp depression induced by natural and synthetic narcotics and by pentazocine and propoxyphene. Drug of choice when nature of depressant drug is not known and for diagnosis of suspected acute opioid overdose. 4. Major side effects & drug interactions. DRUG INTERACTIONS: reverses analgesic effect of narcotic (opiate) agonists and narcotic (opiate) angonist-antagonists SIDE EFFECTS: tremors, hyperventilation, sweating, increased BP, tachycardia, N/V, elevated partial thromboplastin time
5. Nursing Implications & teaching. IMPLICATIONS: • Observe pt closely; duration of action of some narcotics may exceed that of narcan. Keep Dr informed; repeat narcan dose may be necessary • Narcotic abstinence symptoms induced by narcan generally diminish 20-40 min after admin and usually disappear within 90 min • Monitor resp and other vitals • Monitor surgical and obstretics pts closely for bleeding. Narcan has been associated with abnormal coagulation test results.
